The case for gun rights is stronger than you think
CNN ^ | 19 December, 2012 | lliam J. Bennett

(CNN) -- On NBC's "Meet the Press" this past Sunday, I was asked how we can make our schools safer and prevent another massacre like Sandy Hook from happening again. I suggested that if one person in the school had been armed and trained to handle a firearm, it might have prevented or minimized the massacre.

"And I'm not so sure -- and I'm sure I'll get mail for this -- I'm not so sure I wouldn't want one person in a school armed, ready for this kind of thing," I said. "The principal lunged at this guy. The school psychologist lunged at the guy. Has to be someone who's trained. Has to be someone who's responsible."

Is Bennett talking out of both sides of his mouth on this? Didn't he just call for a gun ban?

Regardless of how the gun control argument plays out, Bennett just wants to be on the winning side.

He is just a formless blob of jello these days.

The problems with Bennett aside, it doesn’t matter how strong the case for or against something is if those in opposition just want what they want no matter what.

Bennett and Manchin find themselves in the same boat...”oops, maybe we should start rowing in the other direction so we don't end up going over the falls.”

What keeps sticking in my mind is the one teacher who used her body to shield the kids. Do the libs have any inkling how long these mass shootings last? Infinity. They go on forever.

In real time, this shooting started at 9:30 am. and the cops didn’t find his body till 10:30 am. That’s one whole hour, or at the very least half an hour this nut could have been shooting, the very same as the Columbine shooting. Maybe libs should look at the clock and time how long that is. It’s forever. It’s the fish in a barrel scenario from hell.

And going through THAT is preferable to even ONE teacher being armed? Are they EFFIN KIDDING ME? They HAVE to go through THAT because libs don’t like it if they are armed? SCREW THEM!

According to Mapquest the distance from 3 Main St, the location of the police dept (a comment on their web site says they responded to the shooting) is 2.4 miles...repeat 2.4 miles from 3 main to 12 dickinson. It took 20 minutes to travel 2.4 miles. Traffic must have been awful...like in NYC, LA or Dallas - not. What is wrong with this picture?

What is wrong is your information. The Newtown police released a time line on the event and they were on the scene at first in less than 5 minutes and when backup arrived and they entered the building it was 11 minutes.

911 call timeline has a ten minute span between the initial call and somebody saying “we got bodies here”

Still, ten minutes is a LONG time....

What do you think caused the delay?

So they waited six minutes outside while people were inside getting shot?

That is actually not that bad; considering the conduct of the police at Columbine and Virginia Tech; considering that they were waiting six minutes while children were being murdered........

Indeed, what is wrong with this picture?

From a milkitary and security background point of view, it takes time to understand what is going on, who to marshall, how to respond, and what extent is the threat (to the repsonders).

The idea that a cop will roar on to the scene, enter the building and search out a solution to the unknown is FOREIGN to most law enformcent mentality. Now, if my comment are seemingly inflamatory to LE operations, they are not intended as such, but if the shoe fits... I know some departments train to respond in jsut such a manner-but there have been few or no actual responses executed so.

On the other hand, a teacher standing in the door of his/her classroom, in the moment when realization of a threat occurs, is fully vested in near perfect intelligence, the urgency of a need to respond and the morality of will to do so. Unfortunately, vainly heroically, all he/she can do is absorb bullets/knife thrusts etc in the hope that the threat will be exhausted before the innocents are consumed as well.

Now, picture this alternate reality:

Shots heard in the building, hard doors close, students moved to the inside off corner of the rooms, behind a hard barrier installed for this purpose, the teacher draws his/her sidearm and guards her charges like a sheep dog in the entrance to the sheep fold. No one comes in the door without being engaged with fire until the all clear is given by pre-arranged and duplicated signal....

Wonder why evildoers do not often attack known armed, hardened facilities and persons? Because they are not stupid. Apparaently, our schools boards, local, state and federal governments and the parents of these children are....

After either Stockton or Columbine Bill Bennett and Cal Thomas both came out as anti-gunners.

Which are reasons #1, #2, and #3, why law-abiding civilians (including school teachers/administrators) should have the right to CCW. They would have known, almost immediately, what was going on, whom to marshall (themselves with their own weapon), and the extent of the threat (the lunatic in the classroom down the hall executing children). How many additional deaths are there in these mass shootings while the police go through #1-#3, AFTER the 5-15 minutes it takes them to get there in the first place?

I forgot to include, how to respond: put one or more bullets through the maniac's rotten skull.

I think you may have some different information than the CNN timeline and those of several other news reports as late as yesterday. I’m having a had time believing that the gunman put three shots into 20 individuals who may have been running around and moving to escape. The gunman shot himself when he saw the police...all in five minutes. I’m not saying a well training shooter could not do this, but...the time just seems longer than 5 minutes.

Most individuals were probably cowering in fear, as they have been taught to do, and not running around. You can easily shoot 20 rounds a minute with a bolt action, that would be a hundred rounds in 5 minutes. With a semi-auto it is a bit faster, but not that much because you still have to aim.

“Zactly.”

The obvious answer to threats in any place, public or private, are armed persons, trained, skilled and present of mind AT the TIME of the assault.

The NRA and others are speaking of armed LE types, security guards- are they not just paid blue collars? Will they run to the guns? If armored, armed and reinforced cops will not, why would a lessor servant?

The teachers, administrators, janitors, parents (any adult on the premises)need to be the ones invested with the responsibility to defend their own.

I certainly am not advocating that everyone be armed, just those who are so minded and so trained and practiced in teh basics of armed self dfense and defense in and outside of a building.

Let those who already seek out CCWs be the first, then vett others and provide opportunitiy for training etc. May not be a simple equation, but it will be able to broken down into solve-able portions and enacted with much effect.

Risk of an “approved” person going berserk? “What do you troopers wnat to live forever”? NO such thing as a zero risk solution to anything.

Momma and I pulle dour children out of public schools and homeschooled ( 15 years ago). All of our children won scholarships and ahve college educations and are sucessful non felons etc.

They were protected by loving and armed parents at home and around the state/world during HS events and excursions. Momma gave up a good income to raise our children right.... Dad wore a green uniform for 25 years.

Parents need to choose, I guess.
