“What seemed to me to be a problem … is that we basically left our schools open to attack — This is like putting a sign in front of your house that says ‘I really think that it’s a good idea to come and attack me because I don’t believe in guns’ — and that’s exactly what we were trying to avoid,” David Thweatt, Superintendent of Harrold district schools in Texas, said on FOX News this morning.

In 2007, according to FOX News, the Harrold, Texas school district made the decision to allow teachers to carry concealed guns at school to protect their students against potential violence. In the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting, and amid new calls for gun control, that district’s methods are getting a closer look.

I read about this Texas school several days ago. Their main reason for having concealed carry was that the nearest law enforcement was 20 minutes (miles) away.

Texas is big and in some areas, distances to help are far away. Same with stores - these people in the great area of Texas only travel such distances one a week or once every two weeks.

If you want privacy, Texas has the land to provide that but you give up convenience to law enforcement, hospitals, etc..

In crowded and densely populated CT the response time by first responders wasn't fast enough.

It works for smaller areas also! I mean, just look at Israel. They haven't had a school massacre since they armed the teachers, I believe it was in 1974!

Doesn’t matter if 1st responders are 20 minutes away or even less. The attack took 7 minutes according to reports, and it was over. Armed Police officers at every school is the answer, then the 1st responders are already there. No one has tried to hijack an airplane with box cutters since the air marshalls program started.

I just read on another thread that Texas is introducing legislation next year to put MORE GUNS in all of Texas schools. So, most of the country is jerking guns away from people, not letting guns be in school areas and other areas BUT Texas will put more good guys with guns in schools and other places.

MORE GUNS IN TEXAS FOR GOOD GUYS SOON SO KILLERS SHOULD GO TO STATES THAT ARE TAKING GUNS AWAY FROM GOOD GUYS. (I just bought more ammo.)

A bill has been filed in SC allowing public school employees (not only teachers) who have concealed weapons permits to carry their guns on school grounds.

Good for SC - there must be “thinkers” in that state.

Thank God Harrold, TX isn't in Sheila Jackson Lee's district!

The old saw that insanity is repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting different results applies. Gun-free zones have repeatedly been established, and subsequently violated; Newtown CT being one of the latest examples.

Time for some “outside-of-the-box” thinking. Train and arm all teachers and administrators, and fire those who object—After all, it’s for the children.
