WASHINGTON (AP) - Spurred by a horrific elementary school shooting, President Barack Obama vowed to send Congress new policy proposals for reducing gun violence by January.
"This time, the words need to lead to action," Obama said Wednesday. He tasked Vice President Joe Biden with leading an administration-wide effort to create the new recommendations and pledged to push for their implementation without delay.
The president, who exerted little political capital on gun control despite a series of mass shootings in his first term, bristled at suggestions that he had been silent on the issue during his first four years in office. But he acknowledged that Friday's deadly shooting had been "a wake-up call for all of us."
Twenty children and six adults were killed when a man carrying a military-style rifle stormed Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Friday morning.
The president also called on Congress Wednesday to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and to pass legislation that would close the gun show "loophole," which allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check. Obama also said he wanted Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips.
"The fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing," Obama said. "The fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence."
The president's announcement Wednesday underscores the urgency the White House sees in formulating a response to the Newtown shooting. The massacre has prompted several congressional gun rights supporters to consider new legislation to control firearms, and there is some concern that their willingness to engage could fade as the shock and sorrow over the Newtown shooting eases.

All accounts I've read and heard have stated that the shooter used 2 pistols exclusively and that the rifle was, in fact, in the car the shooter used to get to the scene.
This is turning into an enormous propaganda tool for the Communists in DC, and I believe the truth needs to set the record straight before they start with another AWB.
The good news is, the Current Occupant assigned the job to Joe Biden.
The bad news is, that any recommendations that Joe, while just being Joe (and thus the “solutions” will be inapplicable and inappropriate), shall come up with will be airily dismissed (like the Simpson-Bowles advice on the impending fiscal crisis) and some really unacceptable thing like demanding that ownership registration be turned over to the UN and it will be an international crime to own sidearms or ammunition. This would circumvent the Second Amendment altogether.
Criminals everywhere will rejoice.

Last Monday after the school shooting happened, the Catholic school where my boys attend decided to have a little in-class assignment to sort of help them understand what had happened since a lot of them were asking questions (I had already discussed it with my boys over the weekend due to constant questioning from them).
My 9 year old's class was asked to write down some brief words about how the shooting made them feel. My son went on to write a short paragraph about how sad he was about all those kids dying and then he explained that he was also a little bit scared because the teacher and the principle at his school didn't have any guns to save them if a guy came to their school like that. I won't get into his assessment of their weak security methods, but it was a bit comical to say the least.
Of course, that's the shortened version, but his words almost exactly. He knows full well that guns aren't allowed inside the school because I am forced to disarm and lock my iron in the glove box every stinking time we go into the school... he also knows I never take the gun off unless I go to bed so we have had this discussion regarding guns not being allowed int he school.
The teacher sent the students home with their papers for us to read and discuss if we felt necessary... it was not a graded paper, but did have one teacher comment written on it in red ink; "interesting perspective" is all it said.
Lets get one of those petition thingys going on the WH website that says leave our guns alone.
That was incorrect early information. A shotgun was recovered from the car. All of the victims were killed by .223 rounds fired from the Bushmaster, according to the medical examiner.
What about marketing a new widget with your machinist skills? Maybe a pretty clamp for bracing hi-cap M-4 magazines together?...or a shiny paperweight for bureaucratic Obamacare forms?...or a scooter uni-body for durable electric transportation?...or a better rasp for sharpening our axes and machetes?
An 88 yr. old German relative who lived during the rise of the Third Reich said the other day that she didn’t see how the American people couldn’t see that Obama’s doing exactly like Hitler did during that time.
GOP needs to just say “Gun control is people control. Do you really feel safer with the government having all the guns?”
And the pistols that were supposedly used? I believe they cited a Glock 20 (10 mm) and a Sig Sauer 9mm?

and Hammer and outlets for the hand tools. Now have
to locate an install the forge hood, but my sis doesn’t
like me being on the roof so have to wait for my younger
brother to come help. Looking forward to being able to
work. I had to shut the shop down 12 years ago when I
lost my lease and couldn’t find a place to move to.
Then I went into industry until I retired and was able
to buy a house with a three car garage to make into
a forge shop.
