DA to Marin County: Turn in your guns Jan. 15 By Nels Johnson

"Let's do something more than just talk," District Attorney Ed Berberian urged the Board of Supervisors, calling on residents to "turn in their reservoir of guns that are really not needed in our county."

"What can we do? What should we do? How can we stop this from happening?" Berberian asked, summing up the reflections of many. "We are a society with too many guns."

The program, proposed by Supervisor Susan Adams and Berberian, will be coordinated by Berberian's staff and involve locales across the county at which

residents can turn in guns of all kinds.

The proposal follows the slaughter of 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Friday.

"It is unimaginable, the pain and grief," Adams said, noting that "We have our own issues of gun violence here in Marin," with shootings in San Rafael and Marin City.

"When do you say, 'enough'?" Adams asked.

Noting that Newtown is similar in many respects to Marin, the district attorney said that what happened in Connecticut "can happen anywhere, at any time."

Officials seemed to agree that while largely symbolic, a gun buy-back program is an initial step. Details including times, places and how much cash will be offered to gun donors will be

Other actions include making sure authorities are trained and equipped to respond, ensuring schools are prepared for emergencies, and that mental health programs receive the attention they deserve, officials said.

Berberian noted that the county sheriff's office has only one "resource" officer to serve 32 schools, a staffing level Supervisor Kate Sears agreed should be expanded.

"It's time to take action to make ourselves better by taking care of others," Sears added, saying gun control, training, mental health and related programs are part of the solution.

Berberian, noting King died in a "senseless act of gun violence," said the civil rights leaders' birthday provides an ideal time to hold a buy-back program. "It would be something ... I'm sure he would support," Berberian said.

Gun buy-back programs in Oakland and San Francisco over the weekend took an arsenal off the streets. Some 349 handguns, 149 rifles, 92 shotguns and another six guns that owners handed over without even waiting for a $200 payment.

Nearly 600 guns — from vintage World War rifles to modern day assault weapons — are in storage waiting to be melted down following what officials in both cities called their most successful buy-back to date.

Melt down vintage rifles? Collectors would pay good money!

I would like to turn Marin county in to the ocean.

I know CA looks nice and has nice landscape but why does maybe 2 million conservatives still stay in that state, give their money to that state and know their vote nevr counts in Pres elections?

Imagine if two million conservatives moved out and moved to AZ, NM, CO, thus making those state solid republican.
It’s just like those conservatives up in the north east and places like IL.

imagine of millions of conservatives moved to NC, FL, VA, maybe OH.
Thsoe states would be solid republican and have conservative reps plus if all those states went republican the left would never win any Pres elections again

I’ll be honest about this. If I can find a good accounting job out there in a state like Texas (maybe even Texas) and my wife finds something within the area of her expertise, we are out of here!

Has there ever been any gun buy-back program where the officials overseeing such even turned in their gun first to set an example for all of us?

I think all the people in Marin County should turn in their guns and post signs outside their homes with the words: “Gun free house.”

‘I would like to turn Marin county in to the ocean.”

Or expel CA from the USA. Or just split into “Red and “Blue”.

RE: The rifles. Please. I’m pretty sure anything of value (like the StG 44 I posted about last week) find their way into collections.

Anyone else have that feeling that you don’t live in the country you grew up in anymore?

Problem with that is that if you get conservatives together, and they’ll prosper. Then libs will follow after they’ve destroyed what they have and leach off the conservatives’ prosperity.

We call them ‘rats, but I think “locusts” would be a more accurate comparison.

Turning in guns because some wacko killed a bunch of people is in itself well, wacko.

An NFL player crashed his car a couple of weeks ago killing a teammate, should I stop driving?

Can’t get this site or page to load.

Was this one of the sites that a year back or so we freepers added to our HostsMan(ager) blockage to keep from accessing?

I’m seeing a different poll question: “Should school teachers be armed?”.

Surprisingly, it’s almost even.

Grew up in Marin, Sixties and early Seventies, back before the locusts completely engulfed it. I miss it.

I got through just fine. The poll is neck-and-neck, astonishing for hyper-liberal Marin.
