Maybe Scott Brown will become the Manny Mota of politics — the guy who excels at pinch-hitting. After having just lost a statewide election to hold onto the seat he won in a January 2010 special election, Republicans want him back as their nominee if John Kerry gets his expected Secretary of State appointment. And according to a new poll from Boston’s NPR affiliate WBUR, Brown leads all of the expected Democratic candidates, too (via Sarah Rumpf):
WBUR poll of 500 registered voters finds U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is in a strong position should there be a special election to fill U.S. Sen. John Kerry’s seat.
Kerry is believed to be President Obama’s choice to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The poll, conducted by the MassINC Polling Group on Monday and Tuesday, finds voters view Brown favorably, despite the fact that in November they chose to elect Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren in his stead. Fifty-eight percent of those polled say they have a favorable view of Brown, compared with 28 percent who view him unfavorably. Rounded off, 12 percent say they are undecided, and 1 percent say they have never heard of him. …
“We matched him up theoretically against (U.S. Reps.) Ed Markey, Mike Capuano, Steve Lynch and (former U.S. Rep.) Marty Meehan, and in each one of those cases, he led by between 17 and 19 points,” Koczela said.
Meehan, now the president of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, has already said he’s not interested in running.
The poll also pits him against his 2010 opponent, Martha Coakley, who doesn’t fare any better in a rematch. Brown actually pulls a majority in a head-to-head against Coakley, winning 51/36. The only other majority he gets comes against Steve Lynch, beating him by more than 2:1 at 51/24.
What about Deval Patrick? I doubt that Patrick wants to trade the governorship for a seat in the US Senate midway through his second term, but even if he did, he might not get it. Brown edges Patrick in this poll by seven points, 47/40, the closest any Democrat gets to Brown in this survey. Patrick is the only Democrat to get to the 40% level. Coakley actually does better than anyone but Patrick.
Clearly, Brown remains popular in Massachusetts, and without Barack Obama on the ticket and in a special election, he has a good chance to make a triumphant return to the US Senate in mid-spring. That may have Massachusetts Democrats dialing the 213 area code to look for a candidate.

I see people here who don't like the politics of MA no matter what's at stake or who the candidate. They're refusing to help ensure a senate seat returns to the GOP "this time" as if they lifted a finger last time. It's sure and certain path way to permanent minority status, self-marginalization and sure irrelevance.
Yes. Plus presidential elections have the habit of turning out the stupidest of the stupid. Especially when their Santa Claus boy king is on the ticket.
Why should I care if a progressive puts an R or a D after her name? Probably better if the progressive calls himself a democrat. Progressive Republicans just stink up the brand.

Scott Brown embarrassed himself in the last election with advertising that stressed he was an independent who could work both sides of the street. When he first ran I worked for him along with thousands of other disaffected conservatives. As a Senator he almost immediately sided with the Dem side of the street. Good luck Scott, I’m done with you. In the next election cycle I’m voting with my feet, Arizona here I come.
Still trust polls, now, do ya? BTW, Ted Kennedy Jr. is interested in running for this seat, too, and, if Ted Kennedy Jr., officially, gets into this race, then he will win it by a lot! The majority of Massachusetts voters are scary and strange, whenever it comes to voting for anybody from the Kennedy family running for any political office in Massachusetts.
Well many people on this thread are less than enthusiastic. Hey we need 6 to dethrone Reid, add Brown to Rounds and hopefully Capito and we are halfway there. Capito does not enthuse me and Brown even less so but they are the best options in their respective states at this time.

I believe he can win again and win a full term in the 2014 midterm election. Several Senators have served and then lost and came back and lost again. Chapman Revercomb of WV comes to mind.
They may try to change the law so an appointed Senator can serve till the 2014 election.
Either way it is likely Deval will not appoint another placeholder and Brown would be facing an incumbent appointed Senator, possibly Deval himself.

He’s not. I suspect if he runs for anything again, he’ll run as an IND. I’ve said that before.
The thing is, just when you forget the clustrf*cks he’s voted for in the past, he lobs a new one out there with this assault weapons ban garbage. It’s REALLY hard to support a “Republican” when they mimic RAT talking points. Case in point on a personal level: In 2010 I donated time and money to his campaign. Last month, I voted; no extra efforts given. He really has supported some truly asshat legislation.

Yes, the 2010 special election had ~600,000 less voters than last months POTUS election, IIRC.
The RATS have not lost a statewide race in MA since Brown’s win in 2010.
