A 20-year-old Boston University sophomore and a self-described 'cellist-nerd' brought the Miss Universe crown back to the U.S. for the first time in more than a decade when she won the televised contest on Wednesday.
Olivia Culpo beat 88 other beauty queens to take the title from Leila Lopes of Angola during the two-hour competition at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip. In a refreshing change, the Miss Universe title, which makes Olivia unequivocally one of the world's most beautiful women, appears to have been bestowed on a girl with a healthy streak of normality.
Following the win, her brother told CBS that she was 'really chubby and sort of weird when she was younger' while her father said Olivia was the 'nerdiest' of his five children.
Family pictures show Olivia goofing around with friends as she gets pushed along in a shopping cart and playing with her siblings Peter, Gus, Sophia and Aurora. Indeed, her family appears to be taken back by her decision to enter the world of pageants, something they knew nothing about.
Olivia won Miss Rhode Island last year while wearing a $20 rental dress. She then became the first Miss USA winner from Rhode Island when she took the national crown in Las Vegas in June.
She grew up in Cranston as the middle child of five with two professional musicians for parents, Susan and Peter Culpo. She graduated from St Mary Academy Bay View in 2010 and is a member of the National Honor Society. Her love of Italian led her to spend two summers studying in Milan. The 20-year-old has played the cello alongside world-renowned classical musician Yo-Yo Ma and performed at Carnegie Hall.

so... did they do the slutty nude body painting competition this year?
Are you sure you didn’t link to the Miss Anorexia pageant by mistake?
There is a real need for sammiches in that lineup.
And again, an earthling won the Universe title.
I watched it on and off and I swear it was like attack of the killer clones.
I think about the only difference between half of them was the number of nostril hairs they had.
Modern fashion has alot to learn about true beauty.
Average, at best.
We moved the Celtics game to the small TV at my Italian-American club last night for this. WOW!
I will never ‘get’ beauty as it’s defined since about 1991ish.
Having anorexia is not attractive to me. However, since the bodies on these women is closer to that of an adolescent boy than anything, I guess it makes the homos happy.
And since that crowd now defines what is and is not ‘beauty, we should not be surprised. It’s really sad but I have been on boards where Marilyn Monroe was said to be a “fat Pig” by younger guys.
How freaking warped to you have to be to think like that?
Inquiring minds need to know!
Miss Venezuela had it in the bag till she goofed by not saying what she needed to in the Q and A session. She really lost it. Spoke English which she had seemed to be doing well at but made no sense in the Q&A.
I believe there is a Miss Earth and Miss World pageants. But none gets on tv. Mrs. America is sometimes run on ION.
Yeah I can’t believe it either.
I love sexy nerdy girls.
Poor thing, I felt sorry for her. I think she was only trying to say “We have enough laws,” which is a pretty good answer, IMO.
What about “Miss Global Cooling”, the woman with whom you would most like to share an igloo.
Wow, they really are skinny this year.
Yup. Pretty faces to be sure, but good God. that does not look healthy much less attractive.
Considering the feminine, weak appearance of many younger guys these days, somehow it doesn't surprise me. Testosterone really doesn't seem to be oozing from those types.
Grrrr, pant, pant!
She looks better in the non-pageant pics.
I think that she is just great! I also love that her gown is elegant with long sleeves.
