First on CNN: Mark Sanford plans to run for Congress

Richmond, Virginia (CNN) - Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is launching a political comeback that may begin within days.

Sanford is planning to run for the Congressional seat he held almost a decade ago, a Republican source familiar with his thinking told CNN late Thursday.

“He’s looking all but certain to do it,” said a former top aide to Sanford, who did not want to be identified while prematurely revealing the plans.

A formal announcement will come soon, the source said.

Sanford intends to seek the Republican nomination in South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District, a seat being vacated by Rep. Tim Scott, who was appointed to the United States Senate earlier this week by Gov. Nikki Haley.

Sanford’s first test, the Republican primary, is likely to happen in late March.

Under South Carolina law, the primary must take place 11 weeks after Scott officially resigns his House seat. He is expected to do so in early January.

A runoff election would take place two weeks after the primary, if no candidate receives a majority of votes, followed by a special election in May, a contest that will strongly favor the Republican nominee given the district’s GOP-friendly map.

Sanford, who resides in the Charleston area, represented the coastal district from 1995 to 2001 and had a conservative, almost libertarian voting record, often taking lonely stands on the House floor alongside Rep. Ron Paul of Texas.

After his three terms in the House, he ran successfully for governor twice and was eyeing a 2012 presidential bid before he notoriously embarked on an extramarital affair that derailed his national ambitions. He is now engaged to his Argentine fiancee.

Given the sprint-like nature of the special election, Sanford would immediately begin his campaign as a frontrunner for the GOP nomination.

Year before the adultery I argued with others that he was a piece of crap before the adultery. I lived in South Carolina for most of his time as governor. The adultery didn't matter to me but his leaving the state for a week and being AWOL showed his piss poor judgment.

South Carolina needs a masochistic representative? It would be fun to run against him but beating on the mentally challenged get boring eventually.

Unethical. He misled his aides as to his whereabouts and activities and was absent from duty on personal pursuit of pleasure. That is a termination offense.

Sanford was a true fiscal conservative and a fine governor—his philandering however, will scuttle any campaign he mounts as a Republican in a conservative district like the 1st.

Just too sordid and embarrassing.

He would make an excellent Blue Dog Democrat though.

Run this pathetic abomination out of the country on a rail- why do jassacks like Sanderson, Spitzer, Weiner, etc., lack a “deep shame” gene?

I read today Sanford`s ex Jenny wants to run for that same seat. I hope she does and wipes the floor with him in the primary. Wouldn`t that be one hell of a payback!

Ughhh. I hope the people of the first cong. district have a little sense not to elect this guy. We can’t seem to get rid of these people esp. his Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. I wonder if he will decide to jump into this race? He seems to want back into elected office badly.....

“Sanford would immediately begin his campaign as a frontrunner for the GOP nomination.”

This says it all about today’s corrupt, shameless, and hypocritical GOP.

It is time to SMASH the GOP, send it to the ash heap of history, and replace it with a genuine, conservative organization.

The GOP Establishment deserves the forthcoming electoral disaster it has brought upon itself.

You ask, “why do jassacks like [Sanford], Spitzer, Weiner, etc., lack a ‘deep shame’ gene?”

Maybe they see that David Vitter is still a Senator and they think, “He’s getting away with it, why not me?”

...”His adultery aside, how was he as governor?”...

Sorry..I can’t get past the adultery, his insane way of handling it and the images of his sweet little sons..Adultery in one area is a prediction, in my mind, of adulterous behavior in other areas, especially, it would seem, in the political arena..Think Chris Christy..If I were his wife, I would be worried for adultery can go both ways.

Governors in the south don’t have as much power as other governors but Sanford was a great governor and will make a great congressman. I wish he was in my district and I wish him nothing but the best in whatever he does.

Sanford was my former Congressman and Governor. I’ve seen the good and bad in him. I don’t see him being a serious contender for District 1. Although, stranger things have happened as Andre Bauer keeps getting elected to positions in SC.

Jenny Sanford for Congress!! She was the brains, drive and money behind this awful, dirty, loathesome horndog. Ugh. Great news about Tim Scott, but now this out-of-control Clintonesque...ugh, is back? Go away!!

SC GOP, you've p*ssed me off plenty with Lindsey Graham. Don't you DARE support Sanford!!
