Posted on 12/21/2012 2:37:29 PM PST by Tailgunner Joe
Two hours before the National Rifle Association told the country that guns were not to blame for the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today said that reasonable people should be able to overcome their differences on the issue and work to craft tougher laws.
Duncan, a member of Vice President Joe Bidens new task force charged with finding solutions to Americas gun violence, said the goal should be to support common sense measures such as banning assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, and closing gun-show loopholes in the background-check process.
Reasonable people should be able to agree on these restrictions, Duncan said, speaking at an elementary school in Northeast Washington today. As the president has pointed out, many of these ideas are backed by members of the NRA and were, in fact, supported by President Reagan. ....
I dont pretend to have all the answers but since last Friday a week ago, I do believe the world has fundamentally changed, Duncan said.
In addition to school administrators, Duncan said he wanted to talk with gun owners, hunters and sport shooters to get their advice on what leaders can do to secure schools.
We have common values that go far beyond the constitutional right to bear arms, Duncan said. We value the right to live our daily lives and to pursue our dreams without fear, but last week the dreams of 26 people in Newtown Connecticut were cut short at an elementary school because one disturbed man was mad at the world.

I too support reasonable gun control. The current 20,000 pages of gun laws are blatantly unreasonable so we need to cut back.
unreal the word games they use.
home schooling makes more sense all the time.
Thanks Arne, but if you were paying attention, you’d know we already have enough restrictions.
Just because you and DiFi want everything this side of a butter knife, classified as an “Assault Weapon”, doesn’t mean you’re “reasonable”.
I’m more than happy to limit the access of ‘rats to guns.
I doubt there are easy answers for what to do with the handful of mass killers every year, but to reduce overall violent crime, we need criminal control actions, not new gun control.
Gun control is kinda like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.
Same talking point as Obama. "Reasonable people should agree."
The implication is that if you don't back gun restrictions then you are irrational.
How far is that from declaring one's political enemies to be psychologically disturbed and shipping them off to Siberia for re-education?
446 children, mostly black, have been shot in Chicago. They don’t want to talk about that. That means they’re racists.
They’re coming for the guns. And anything that is not a single shot will be considered an assault weapon.
“Reasonable people” would let people defend themselves.
A natural right.
It’s time to put politics aside, and pass a law requiring all teachers be issued sidearms and be trained to use it. Also make firearms training a required part of getting a teaching degree. Teacher who refuse should be suspended until they get psychiatric counseling for their hoplophobia. Some people may say this goes to far, but we mus act quickly for the sake of the children.
Isn't this the guy that advocated sterilants in drinking water?
Reasonable people should store socialists and islamists in dungeons. With no access to guns.
gun control is hitting what you aim for
reasonable gun control is hitting what you aim at with every shot every time
Reasonable people also believe that the Department of Education is unconstitutional, and should be scrapped. And that Arne Duncan should go back to teaching P.E. in a junior high school in Podunk.
The left has an uncanny ability to create or hijack terms that mean precisely the opposite of what they sound like.
Women’s Healthcare (abortion), Administrative Simplification (HIPAA), Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
Think about that liberals, you of all types who claim to hate big Governments but
then turn around and support it so long as your people are in power. We the people
will keep you in check by owning our guns. And so far just owning them seems to be working.
And “reasonable” cabinet members order anyone assigned to protect them or members of their families to completely disarm and then, having done so,publicly announce what they’ve done.
Arne should just go back to Chicago, where reasonable people would agree that the school system he ran is a sinkhole of funding and failure.
The fact that this guy is the head of “education” in this country goes a long ways toward explaining how someone like Barry can get elected, TWICE, in this country.
Why is this news? This is just a broken record by Democrats.
I too support gun restrictions. I support restricting street gangs for having guns. Start there.
It should be illegal for someone to shoot school kids in school...oh wait....it is!
I am reasonable and I think we have enough restrictions on firearm ownership. The more we learn about the horrible Sandy Hook massacre, the more we know that the law has limits. Any incident that *starts* with the perp shooting his own mother four times in the head while she lay in bed *starts* with multiple violations of the law, and we go downhill from there.
It is very telling that not at single post-incident proposal deals with any of the real factors of this incident. They are all tangential. Is it just me or does this look not letting a good crisis go to waste. This is so disrespectful what happened in those classrooms. What a cheap shot.
Arne Duncan is not a reasonable person. Why should we listen to him?
So armed guards are good enough for money but not for children?
“Reasonable” restrictions are how we ended up with 20 dead kids...
Lots of middle and high schools have armed guards. They are called resource officers.
Don’t allow them the define what “reasonable” is.
When you do, it turns out they think “reasonable” people shold be allowed to murder unborn babies on demand, yet be unable to legally buy a 32-ounce soda.
You have to take them down right away when they use the “reasonable people” statement, because that is liberal code for “If you don’t agree with all my liberal prefaces, you’re automatically unreasonable.”
I find it reasonable to call for Duncan’s impeachment and removal, along with his master Obama. And I have nothing to say to him, other than “You’re full of crap, resign now, you d**n communist.”
There are plenty of laws already on the books all over this country. The problem is that some people don’t bother following the law, so adding more, won’t do a thing to help the situation.
Reasonably stupid people maybe. Not reasonable people.
What the hell is that?
****told the country that guns were not to blame for the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School,****
This reminds me of a Bill Mauldin cartoon from 1968.
A mob is lynching a handgun. Behind the crowd we see a criminal leaving and says....”They lynched my gun and let ME go!”
Imagine their shock and horror when they discover that we won't give them up.
I think most “reasonable” people understand that gun laws only disarm the law-abiding, and don’t stop law breakers from obtaining and using firearms.
“Reasonable people” include the raving lunatics who think that NRA members should be murdered and that gun owners don’t deserve the rights or protections that everyone has under the Constitution.
So tell me mayor. How many guns have you removed from the streets?
Calm down, he'd never think of gun confiscation. Pinkie square.
