Two hours before the National Rifle Association told the country that guns were not to blame for the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today said that “reasonable people” should be able to overcome their differences on the issue and work to craft tougher laws.
Duncan, a member of Vice President Joe Biden’s new task force charged with finding solutions to America’s gun violence, said the goal should be to support “common sense” measures such as banning “assault weapons” and high-capacity ammunition, and closing gun-show loopholes in the background-check process.
“Reasonable people should be able to agree on these restrictions,” Duncan said, speaking at an elementary school in Northeast Washington today. “As the president has pointed out, many of these ideas are backed by members of the NRA and were, in fact, supported by President Reagan.” ....
“I don’t pretend to have all the answers but since last Friday a week ago, I do believe the world has fundamentally changed,” Duncan said.
In addition to school administrators, Duncan said he wanted to talk with gun owners, hunters and sport shooters to get their advice on what leaders can do to secure schools.
“We have common values that go far beyond the constitutional right to bear arms,” Duncan said. “We value the right to live our daily lives and to pursue our dreams without fear, but last week the dreams of 26 people in Newtown Connecticut were cut short at an elementary school because one disturbed man was mad at the world.”

Think about that liberals, you of all types who claim to hate big Governments but
then turn around and support it so long as your people are in power. We the people
will keep you in check by owning our guns. And so far just owning them seems to be working.
And “reasonable” cabinet members order anyone assigned to protect them or members of their families to completely disarm and then,having done so,publicly announce what they’ve done.
Arne should just go back to Chicago, where reasonable people would agree that the school system he ran is a sinkhole of funding and failure.
The fact that this guy is the head of “education” in this country goes a long ways toward explaining how someone like Barry can get elected, TWICE, in this country.
Why is this news? This is just a broken record by Democrats.
I too support gun restrictions. I support restricting street gangs for having guns. Start there.
It should be illegal for someone to shoot school kids in school...oh wait....it is!
I am reasonable and I think we have enough restrictions on firearm ownership. The more we learn about the horrible Sandy Hook massacre, the more we know that the law has limits. Any incident that *starts* with the perp shooting his own mother four times in the head while she lay in bed *starts* with multiple violations of the law, and we go downhill from there.
It is very telling that not at single post-incident proposal deals with any of the real factors of this incident. They are all tangential. Is it just me or does this look not letting a good crisis go to waste. This is so disrespectful what happened in those classrooms. What a cheap shot.
Arne Duncan is not a reasonable person. Why should we listen to him?
So armed guards are good enough for money but not for children?

Lots of middle and high schools have armed guards. They are called resource officers.
Don’t allow them the define what “reasonable” is.
When you do, it turns out they think “reasonable” people shold be allowed to murder unborn babies on demand, yet be unable to legally buy a 32-ounce soda.
You have to take them down right away when they use the “reasonable people” statement, because that is liberal code for “If you don’t agree with all my liberal prefaces, you’re automatically unreasonable.”
I find it reasonable to call for Duncan’s impeachment and removal, along with his master Obama. And I have nothing to say to him, other than “You’re full of crap, resign now, you d**n communist.”
There are plenty of laws already on the books all over this country. The problem is that some people don’t bother following the law, so adding more, won’t do a thing to help the situation.
Reasonably stupid people maybe. Not reasonable people.
