CIA: 'Zero Dark Thirty' is 'not a documentary'
By Alicia M. Cohn - 12/22/12 09:51 AM ET
The head of the Central Intelligence Agency sent a memo to CIA employees on Friday informing them that the new movie "Zero Dark Thirty," about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, "is not a documentary."
"The film takes significant artistic license, while portraying itself as being historically accurate," CIA Acting Director Michael Morell wrote.
The film, by director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, has already achieved both Oscar predictions and controversy in Congress. The movie depicts the international search for the al Qaeda leader, highlighting one CIA analyst. It ends with the successful Navy SEAL raid of bin Laden's compound that resulted in his death in May, 2011.
The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee has prompted an investigation into whether filmmakers were given classified access in order to create the film, something the Pentagon has denied.
The depiction of waterboarding as a useful interrogation technique has also drawn criticism from several senators who call it a "dangerous" dramatization. Morell sided with those objections in the memo, asserting that it is "false" to claim information gained through enhanced interrogation was the key to finding bin Laden.
"As we have said before, the truth is that multiple streams of intelligence led CIA analysts to conclude that Bin Ladin was hiding in Abbottabad," Morell wrote.
"Some came from detainees subjected to enhanced techniques, but there were many other sources as well. And, importantly, whether enhanced interrogation techniques were the only timely and effective way to obtain information from those detainees, as the film suggests, is a matter of debate that cannot and never will be definitively resolved."
Morell, while noting it would "not be practical for me to walk through all the fiction in the film," specifically pointed to other specific dramatizations in the movie.
Despite the film's focus on a few driven individuals who hunt down bin Laden, Morell wrote that "the selfless commitment of hundreds of officers" actually deserve the credit for the "landmark achievement by our country, by our military, by our Intelligence Community, and by our agency."
He also objected to "considerable liberties" taken while depicting some real-life officers as characters in the film. "We cannot allow a Hollywood film to cloud our memory of them," he warned.
"CIA interacted with the filmmakers through our Office of Public Affairs but, as is true with any entertainment project with which we interact, we do not control the final product," he concluded. "Zero Dark Thirty is a dramatization, not a realistic portrayal of the facts."
Remember when Obama’s staff was BOASTING about bin Laden? They leaked info to the press and even gave the director of this movie inside info.
Now they’re going to face anger in the Muslim world over their boasting....and so the backtracking behind.
Nah, I’m sure the rage boys in the world’s shit pit countries will be just fine with it for two reasons: It is not on You Tube; it’s an 0bama campaign movie.
The PC issue with this movie is that it portrays “torture” as “working.”
The PC position is that torture can never provide useful information. Why they feel obliged to take this position is beyond me, since the issue is whether torture is wrong, not whether it is effective.
For thousands of years people have tortured to obtain information, yet in the last few decades it has somehow become required to pretend that is always ineffective.
PC is being publicly stupid for leftist orthodox political reasons.
It literally becomes a badge of honor say stupid things in public.
It’s interesting that a congressional report dominated by Democrats just came out “proving” that enhanced interrogation i.e. “torture” does not work. When common sense and the facts tell us it certainly does work under many circumstances. As in most other areas of life, libs live in a dream world which they imagine is governed by what they would like to happen instead of what actually can and does happen.
I wondered what would happen when the Obama killed Bin Laden movie came out what would happen since Obama blamed the killing of Amb Stevens on a video.....
The MSM wont ever pick up the duplicity of the O regime .
“Obama blamed the killing of Amb Stevens on a video”
Good point. This movie will be made to order when Obama
pulls his Reichstag style false flag.
CIA says the film is inaccurate because it acurately shows that waterboarding helped get OBL.
And of course torture doesn’t work. Anyone who believes that is just CRAZY. That’s why torture has been used throughout history to gather information from enemies, because it doesn’t work.
I usually make the libtards shut up with this line of BS by saying, “Tell you what, give me a dental tool and an electrical power cord with the male end still attached and the other end with bare wires and let’s see if I can’t get you to give me your PIN number. Wanna bet? No? Then STFU!”
Torture to get a confession doesn’t work, since people will eventually say anything to get the torture to stop.
But torture to obtain specific verifiable actionable information works very well indeed.
Whether it is ever justifiable is another question entirely, and a fit subject for debate.
I do not understand why its opponents insist on mixing an efficacy argument in with the morality argument.
The evil Left savaged Bush for using the procedure, mendaciously calling it “torture.”
They were liars then and they are liars now but they cannot admit it without losing political face.
I imagine the CIA protest went on at length about how the film neglected the “essential role” of Obama at all stages of the operation.
Because you know, Obama can’t really brag about his golf game, with every hole being a hole-in-one, because that was already done by Kim Jong-il.
So, after due consideration by his WH lickspittles and toadies, instead of saying that Obama got two holes-in-one for his game, 9 drives for 18 holes, they figured it would sound better if he donned a military uniform and personally killed Osama bin Laden.
After which, of course, he discreetly gave himself three Medals of Honor, one from the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force, so he would be the only person who ever got three of them.
/dripping with sarcasm and cynicism
It’s not a documentary, because the person assassinated by the fascist Obama was a Double, a stand in. This is why the
alleged body of Osama Bin Ladin was dumped into the sea very quickly, without any shared forensic examination of the putative Osama Bin Ladin corpse with our allies. It is also why photographs of the corpse were not made public, the double would have been discovered by relatives in the ME.
Obama wanted an excuse to be out of the war in Afghanistan and made one, and pulled a grift on America, it is the Obama fascist way. Now the wrath of Obama Khan turns on Israel.
The documentary does not tell any of this truth. It is therefore indeed dangerous.
Nobody complains about the inaccuracies in a "Dark Knight" movie. Geez.
that is a lie... KSM gave up knowledge of the courier because of it
I saw Zero Dark Thirty today, and enjoyed it. Nothing surprising in there really, just a lot of good detective work culminating in the pretty dramatic operation that took out UBL. I can see why the liberals don’t like it, since it doesn’t give Obama any of the glory at all.
The theater was all sold out yesterday, so I went today... today’s shows were filled up too.
