'Lee Dorman, 70, the bassist for the psychedelic rock band Iron Butterfly, was found dead Friday morning in a vehicle, said Gail Krause, an Orange County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman. A coroner's investigation is under way, but foul play is not suspected.
Iron Butterfly was formed in San Diego in 1966 and recorded an album before Dorman joined a revised lineup that included guitarist Erik Braunn, keyboardist and singer Doug Ingle and drummer Ron Bushy.
In 1968, the group recorded "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida," a 17-minute heavy metal track that "was nothing short of a pop monument," The Times said in 1988, "the song of the moment" that caught the attention of the counterculture market. The album stayed on the national sales chart for 2 1/2 years and a three-minute version was a top 40 hit.
By the 1970s, another guitarist, Larry Reinhardt had joined Iron Butterfly. When the band soon broke up, Dorman and Reinhardt formed Captain Beyond with Rod Evans from Deep Purple and other musicians.'

Question on TV game show,”Lets Make A Dope Deal”
“What are the three most popular songs in America?”
1-Happy Birthday To You
2-Old Ang Sign
3-and Inna Godda Davita
Ah, the 60s!
I saw them in person at an outdoor 2-day concert in Orange County, California.
Saw an (odd?) variety of other groups at the event ranging from Country Joe and the Fish to Sonny & Cher (she was pregnant with Chastity) and Tiny Tim.
Didn’t have to touch a joint to get high.
I was there and still have the concert program.
Saw Iron Butterfly with opening act Humble Pie at Winterland in San Francisco 1974. What a show, what a venue.
Condolences to family and friends of Lee Dorman. (Thanks for the links to the music. I never saw the band but bought their first 2 albums)

To give credit where it's due, that song helped nudge me toward classical music.
Where did all these classic videos play before MTV and cable? They sure weren’t on American Bandstand!
I think Lee Dorman hit his stride with Captain Beyond. My own playing was patterned after his version of syncopated bass lines.

“In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” Lyrics
Songwriter: Douglas Ingle
In a gadda da vida, baby
(In the Garden of Eden)
In a gadda da vida, honey
Don’t you know that I’m lovin’ you
Oh, won’t you come with me
And take my hand
Oh, won’t you come with me
And walk this land
Please take my hand
In a gadda da vida, honey
Don’t you know that I’m lovin’ you
In a gadda da vida, baby
Don’t you know that I’ll always be true
Oh, won’t you come with me
And take my hand
Oh, won’t you come with me
And walk this land
Please take my hand
In a gadda da vida, honey
Don’t you know that I’m lovin’ you
In a gadda da vida, baby
Don’t you know that I’ll always be true
Oh, won’t you come with me
And take my hand
Oh, won’t you come with me
And walk this land
Please take my hand
In a gadda da vida, baby
(In the Garden of Eden)
In a gadda da vida, honey
Don’t you know that I’m lovin’ you
Oh, won’t you come with me
And take my hand
Oh, won’t you come with me
And walk this land
Please take my hand
Like many other teenagers in the late ‘60s, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was the first 33rpm LP (AKA, “album”, ie., NOT a 45) record I ever bought. It was a great recording. Everybody back then could play the drum solo on a table with their hands. LOL, I still tap it out sometimes.
RIP, Lee.
Wow, Humble Pie! Loved them. Saw Humble Pie and Black Sabbath open for Mountain at the Spectrum in 1970 (or ‘71?), and then less than a year later Humble Pie and Alice Cooper opened for Black Sabbath. My ears have never been the same since.
Thanks the scotsman. Sad news.
LOL
It’s a small world! That was some concert, huh?
