Earlier speculation that GREATER MEDIA Talk WTKK/BOSTON is considering a format change sooner rather than later (NET NEWS, 12/11) may be getting closer to reality with the news that station veteran and current afternoon host MICHAEL GRAHAM has left the building. His departure follows that of middayer DOUG MEEHAN (NET NEWS, 12/17). The fate of other staffers is still unconfirmed; the station is currently airing "best ofs" of morning duo JIM AND MARGERY. We'll have more details on anything else as soon as we can confirm them. In the meantime, GRAHAM is actively looking for his next opportunity.
Michael gets shafted again.
Never really cared for him that much although I did listen a fair bit. Best of luck to him, at least he has other employment.
Howie Carr list ping
The facts on WTKK: Boston’s first FM talk station started in 99 with Imus, Jay Severin, Mike Barnicle, etc. Later the likes of Graham, Eagan & Braude, Michele McPhee, etc would appear.
Severin got kicked out and after a stint at WXKS (AM) is
now on the Blaze Radio Network. Currently the lineup
is Eagan and Braude, “open” (was Doug Meehan), Mike
Smerconish, “open” (was Graham), Wall St Wrapup, John
Batchelor, and Overnight America. Registered domain names
like BostonsBeat969.com led to speculation the low-rated
talk station would switch to music.
On Thu Clear Channel launched dance music on its WHBA
FM 101.7, possibly scooping Greater Media (WTKK) which
may have been planning something similar. I had noted
Graham and Eagan & Braude’s contracts were due to expire
next year and maybe that was an indication of something
besides talk. We don’t know yet what that will be but here’s
a bit of news.
(Howie Carr had hoped to make his flagship an FM talk
station, but his Entercom deal isn’t over till late 2014.
Will WTKK still be talk by then? Heck, will it still be
talk within the next 2 weeks?)
The station has sucked since Severin left.
That name sounds familiar. Was he ever on in the Washington, DC, area?
SH*T!!!!!!
No Laura Ingraham.... and now no Michael Graham.
WTF?!?
Guessing he would like to have stayed but maybe they opted not to pick up his contract (was to expire in ‘13); maybe something to the “end of talk format” speculation.
Don’t know if WRKO has room for him. Otherwise maybe back
to the Carolinas? who knows
I like and respect Michael a lot, not only for telling it like it is, but for his training seminars for potential Conservative candidates in state and local elections. he does good work for the cause. Perhaps, he can get a gig at The Blaze? I’d think he’d fit in just fine there.
Yup I listened to Jay all the time. He was very popular around 10 years ago.
He got a little to full of himself and went a little overboard.
Yes and WRKO winds up as the only Boston all-talk station.
Disregarding sports talk, there’s
WRKO 680— conservative talk
WBZ 1030—talk at night
NPR stations like 90.9, 89.7, liberal talk and news
Some other talk SHOWS
—conservative Jay Sekulow live on 590 and maybe 850
—brokered liberal talk with Jay Santos on WCRN Worc.
just before Howie
And lots and lots and lots and lots of sports.
Greater Media has registered some web site names that imply a move to music.
They apparently also registered
969ThePulse.com, BostonsPulse969.com, and ThePulse969.com.
Pulse—music? or news? Would they do local news in morning and aft drive and NECN or something otherwise? Two stations I know of use Pulse:
The Pulse 107.7 Concord NH area
“The Heart of New England’s Pulse” WPKZ 1280/105.3 Fitchburg MA (talk, news, sports)
