A suspect is dead and police are seeking three of his cohorts after an apparent home invasion Monday morning at a Las Vegas apartment complex.

Metro Police responded about 10:10 a.m. Monday to La Ventana Apartment Homes, 2901 N. Rainbow Blvd., near West Cheyenne Avenue, after a 911 call from neighbors.

Metro Lt. Ray Steiber said four suspects – at least one of them carrying a firearm – knocked on the door of a first-floor apartment occupied by a couple and their infant. The assailants barged in when the woman occupant answered the door. The intruders were met with armed resistance.

Witnesses reported hearing gunfire exchanged, first inside the apartment and then outside.

Gee.... Christmas Eve Socializing sure has changed since I was a kid.

Back then, we got a gun for Christmas.

Now, you need a gun to make it to Christmas.

If I were fighting four intruders, I would want a 30 round magazine.

THANK YOU. My co-workers asked me last week why I need 20 and 30 round clips and I said "What if I am attacked my three or four guys?" and they were all like "If you need 30 shots for four guys you suck at shooting." and I was like "They're not gonna walk right out in the open and let me shoot 'em." Morons.

any shotgun is better than a ... rifle, for close quarters combat

Never quite understood this one. I think the general perception that a shotgun is more effective is based on the notion that the spread of shot makes it more likely to get a hit.

Of course, back in the real world there is essentially no spread at the distances seen in interior combat.

IOW, if you would have hit him with a shotgun you would also have hit him with a rifle.

Depending on the rounds involved, shotguns are less likely to shoot thru walls or even entire houses, but I don't think that is what the myth of shotgun superiority over rifles is based on.

Dam right. Or Fifteen for a handgun.

Ten rounds in any firearm makes it a very iffy situation against four thugs.

You should ask Santa for this...

Also ask him for the FRAG MISSILE rounds.

What? You believe that a pump shotgun can fire as fast or faster than a semiautomatic shot gun?

I strongly beg to differ. My semiautomatic Browning is MUCH faster than my pump Winchester. Both are kept in primo condition of course and the Browning is easily 2X faster if not more. I have been using the pump Winchester for 50 years and the semiautomatic Browning for 45 years so think that I have a handle on their capabilities by now.

BTW... My other long guns are a pump Remington 22 that I got when I was about 10 and my granddad's Winchester 30-30 when I was 17. Gotta love growing up on a ranch.

What do you recommend? Birdshot? Any particular number shell? I have a Remy 870 Tactical and a Remy 1187 Tactical Autoloader w/ .00 buck, but am more practiced with my Kimber .45 ACPs .230gr HP, in an interior situation (IDPA). At 10ft, my Remys' .00 buck give a 1¾-2" pattern.

“What? You believe that a pump shotgun can fire as fast or faster than a semiautomatic shot gun?”

Yes. With all due respect, I have seen it done... And this is by normal guys like you and me, not by some trick shooter at a show. I completely understand your skepticism, as I felt the same way before I saw it for myself. You should break that Winchester out and set to giving it a go!!! With your experience, I have no doubt that you could get there. Merry Christmas and good luck!!

I am nothing even vaguely resembling an expert.

There are others around here that will be a lot more use to you for advice.

All I know is that 00 buck is a lot more likely to go through walls, and at really close range I also don’t think there’s a huge amount of difference in the wound produced between shot types.

But, as said, not an expert.

The intruders were met with armed resistance.

As it should be.

Note that the tests were all some sort of buckshot or slug. I switched from #4 birdshot to 00 buckshot in my shotguns based on the following from the “Box of Truth” website. Not scientific, but makes sense to me:

http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot14_4.htm

2. Remington 55 grain JSP and Frangible 5.56 also penetrated all 4 walls. So did the .30 Carbine.

When shooting rifles, walls are concealment, not cover.

3. 00 Buck penetrates 4 walls with ease. It is a great “Stopping” round, but there is a price to pay.

Until someone invents a “Phaser” like on Star Trek, anything that will stop a bad guy, will also penetrate several walls.

4. Birdshot does not excessively penetrate drywall walls. But it does not penetrate deeply enough to reach a bad guy’s vital organs. Birdshot makes a nasty but shallow wound. It is not a good Stopper.

Use Birdshot for little birds. Use 00 Buckshot for bad guys.

Thanks; good advice. Guess I’ll stay w/ .00 buck loads. I don’t shoot little birds.

For CQB inside, use '0' or #1. It put out the most effective lead out into the best pattern. Also lessens over-penetration.
#1 is particularly recommended for inside work. If it is for a mixture then go with #1 & single 0.
