New York newspaper faces backlash after publishing map of gun permit holders

A local New York newspaper is drawing the ire of its readers after publishing an interactive map that shows the names and addresses of thousands of residents who have handgun permits.

The online map was published by The Journal News along with an article under the headline: "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood."

The newspaper obtained, and then published, the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in Westchester and Rockland counties through a Freedom of Information Act request.

The article, in explaining the decision to publish the information, pointed to the school massacre in nearby Newtown, Conn., and the concerns of some residents about which of their neighbors might have firearms.

Gun dealers everywhere are thanking this paper for the new business that the paper will bring them....

By the way, NRA memberships are really inexpensive... all of you people in Westchester and Rockland who are now about to be new gun owners ought to think about joining.

I wonder if they ever published the names and addresses of those in those neighborhoods who killed children by abortion.

Has anyone considered publishing the names and addresses of this so-caled newspaper’s employees?

Wondering how many on that list are on the run or hiding from an abusive family member or ex? Now they must worry about being discovered because of this, “newspaper.”

Can’t we publish the names and addresses of journalists?

Anonymous did, but then determined that they weren’t Republicans and turned their backs.

I went to those maps. The second at least (Rockland county). I’ve been scrolling out and those DOTS are showing up across multiple states. Gannet is going to be in a lot more hot water than in just those two counties.

Yeh, I suppose it identifies those that aren’t armed - making them an easy target for home robberies.

I thought you might be. I went to the second map (Rockland County) and scrolled out from there. They’ve outed people across several states!

So this map can be used by criminals to target homes without guns too?

The intent was to whip up gun hysteria. It failed. Got to hand it to the yankees though....some aren’t so against the 2nd amendment.

The paper also inadvertently gives out more info. It tells burglars, rapists, etc., people who DON’T have a gun. If someone wants to break into a house, all they have to do is check the papers list to see if the house owners have a gun.

A few years ago Gannett papers printed the salaries of all public employees in their respective areas. Not just one paper, but a bunch of them did so.

Given that pattern, I would assume that more Gannett papers will be FOIAing gun permit information and publishing it. Heck, USA Today will probably publish a national database that one can search.
