WHEN ‘ASSAULT WEAPONS’ SAVED KOREATOWN

When 'assault weapons' saved Koreatown

This year marked the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles riots, sparked by the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department officers accused of beating the now-deceased Rodney King. During the five days, mobs around Los Angeles looted stores, burnt 3,767 buildings, caused more than $1 billion in property damage, and led to the deaths of more than 50 people and left another 4,000 injured. A story that has been forgotten since then is that of the brave storeowners in Koreatown who fended off mobs with handguns, rifles and assault weapons.

On the second day of the riots, the police had abandoned much of Koreatown. Jay Rhee, a storeowner in the area, stated to The Los Angeles Times, “we have lost faith in the police.”

With the cops nowhere to be found, hundreds of people marauded through the streets towards Koreatown. The neighborhood suffered 45 percent of all the property damage and five fatalities of storeowners during the riots. Having had enough of waiting for police, Korean storeowners assembled into militias to protect themselves, their families, and businesses.

According to the Los Angeles Times, “From the rooftops of their supermarkets, a group of Koreans armed with shotguns and automatic weapons peered onto the smoky streets…Koreans have turned their pastel-colored mini-malls into fortresses against looters tide.”

Rhee claimed that the storeowners shot off 500 rounds into the sky and ground in order to break up the masses of people. The only weapons able to clear that much ammo in a very short time are assault weapons. Single shot pistols or rifles might not have been able to deter the crowd hell-bent on destroying the neighborhood.

By the end of the day storeowners had slain four looters and fended off the mob. It would be 24 more hours until the National Guard arrived and another two days before the riots were completely put down. Had the riots occurred just a couple of years later when the Congress banned assault weapons, many of these storeowners may not have been so lucky. It’s situations like the LA riots, which, while being rare, can occur anywhere from the streets of Los Angeles to far off countries during the Arab Spring.

Assault weapons are legal for this reason: they protect people from extreme cases of assault.

Many liberal pundits like talk show host Piers Morgan, who immigrated to this country several years ago, cannot see a reason why assault weapons might be practical to be owned by civilians. Had he been a Korean immigrant in South Los Angeles in 1992, he would have been decrying, “from my cold dead hands.”

In the wake of the recent tragedy in Connecticut, it is important to focus discussion with a more broad perspective on lawful gun ownership. Instead of creating a media blitz that fails to remember the day when a neighborhood was saved by an assault weapon. But lest it be forgotten, assault weapons don’t save neighborhoods, people save neighborhoods.

It was the “Holder-peeps” who were the problem back then, too, wasn’t it?

It is not PC to say, but...

Makers vs Takers
Capitalists vs moochers
Enterprising immigrants vs lazy entitled victims

The assault weapon gives a small band of individuals the tool necessary to fend off murderous and pillaging thugs.

Yes, several of them dragged a (white) truck driver out of his rig and severely beat him.
There were pictures galore, several of the thugs were ID’d and eventually got off due to a made up ‘illness’ about growing up in the ghetto with a drug addict mother and absentee father.

One of the punks was named ‘Football Williams’ and a bat was weapon of choice.

The attacked truck driver (name temp escapes) (Reggie Denny =something I think?) eventually ended up ‘forgiving’ the mob and virtually saying he should have known better.

The author of this piece has the wrong idea what an assault weapon is.
Since so many do not know what an Assault Weapon really is, let us check in with Chuck Woolery.

http://saveuschuckwoolery.com/

Assault Rifle means:
It is of mid size caliber maybe a 6.8 mm or similar.
One trigger pull one cartridge is fired.
One trigger pull, a burst of two - three cartridges are fired.
One trigger pull continuous firing until trigger is released or magazine is empty.

This is all controled by a toggle switch on the side of the weapon.

These are not for sale to the public, only Military and Law Enforcement can obtain these.

The Bushmaster AR15 is a semi-automatic rifle made to look like a battle rifle. It operates no different than a semi-automatic Browning or Remington sporting dear rifle or a sporting shotgun used for taking water fowl game.

You’re confusing “assault weapon” with “assault rifle”. Different beasts.

Years ago, a bike gang came to town. This gang broke into an acquaintances garage and started stealing his motorcycle and looting his garage. They didn't know this individual at all though or they would have known he could have armed a squad of riflemen well. He used an HK91 to encourage them to leave. No shots were fired. They left and did not return. Assault weapons do have a legitimate purpose in a country that is absolutely overrun with violent gangs, a country like the US of A for example.

I haven’t forgotten. And the people in Miami after Andrew who were armed haven’t forgotten either. They weren’t robbed, raped or killed.

This is why I gave my daughter some extra 00 buckshot. She owns and is proficient with a 12 gauge and a couple of handguns. But she’s under 30 and just doesn’t have the same attitude that comes with having watched the 1968 riots, 1992 LA etc.

IIRC, the Koreans were the only group that took this kind of action in mass. In a country that was halfway sane, these people would have been held up all over the media as examples to be admired and emulated.

Not disputing the premise of the O.P., however I believe a scoped 30-06 or .270 would have served well in that crisis as well as it’s higher capacity brethren.

The video footage of a Korean shop owner defending his business with a Beretta 92 which I’m sure held a 15 round mag will forever live in my mind.

Koreatown refused to be a trough for the Takers. The Takers got the message and went elsewhere end of story.

Girdusky could use some remedial classes in English, specifically on sentence structure and how to write without sentence fragments. He could also use a refresher on the comparison of adjectives.
