Kerry nomination proves Obama doesn't understand Latin America

Last spring, President Obama attended a meeting of Latin American leaders. We remember that meeting because of the Secret Service scandal. It was also the meeting when Latin American leaders complained that the Obama administration does not have a policy toward the region.

I was very happy to see that Mary Anastasia O'Grady of The Wall Street Journal posted an article about the nomination of Sen Kerry to be Secretary of State. She pointed out that Sen Kerry has been on the "left" side of every major event in the last 40 years:

"Mr. Kerry's record of promoting American values abroad is dismal. It isn't that he opposes U.S. intervention-far from it. The trouble is that he has a habit of intervening on behalf of bad guys. A left-wing world view and an earnest conviction that it is his destiny to impose it on others may make him a perfect fit in the Obama cabinet. But it won't be good for poor countries or for U.S. interests."

* Mr Kerry supported "the Sandinistas" over "the Contras".

* In Honduras '09, Mr Kerry supported Sr. Zelaya, an ally of Chavez, trying to violate the country's constitution.

* Add to this Mr Kerry's opposition to free trade agreements, from the very successful NAFTA to Colombia, Chile, etc.

Mr Kerry will be our next Secretary of State. They will probably cheer in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela and scratch their heads in Mexico, Colombia and Chile.

Like the president, Sen Kerry has a "Peace Corps" view of Latin America. They are still living in the 1950s and thinking that we need another version of "The Good Neighbor Policy".

From the Wall Street Journal:

Latin America knows all too well the dangerous combination of Mr. Kerry’s arrogance and, to be polite, let’s say, naiveté. In 1985, in the midst of the Cold War, he led a congressional delegation to Nicaragua, where he met with Sandinista comandante Daniel Ortega. The Sandinista reputation as a human-rights violator was already well-established, and the Soviets were stalking Central America.

Nevertheless, Mr. Kerry came back from Managua advocating an end to U.S. support for the resistance known as the “Contras.” The House took his advice and voted down a $14 million aid package to them. The next day Mr. Ortega flew to Moscow to get $200 million in support from the Kremlin

REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED IN HONDURAS?

President Manuel Zelaya, an ally of Hugo Chávez, had been unconstitutionally trying to extend his time in office. The Honduran Supreme Court ordered the military to arrest him. All the other branches of government, the Catholic Church, Honduras’s human-rights ombudsman and Mr. Zelaya’s own party backed the court’s decision.

Mr. Chávez, Fidel Castro and the Obama administration became furious, called it a “coup d’état” and moved to isolate the tiny country. When Sen. Jim DeMint (R., S.C.) planned a fact-finding trip to Tegucigalpa, Mr. Kerry’s office tried to stop him by blocking funding. When the Law Library of Congress concluded that the Honduran high court had acted legally, Mr. Kerry wrote to the head of the library demanding that the opinion be retracted and “corrected.” In the spring of 2010, a Kerry staffer traveled to Honduras to pressure officials there to adopt the Obama administration’s “coup” narrative.

NOT THAT HILLARY WAS ANY BETTER, SO CHOOSING JOHN KERRY TO REPLACE HER SIMPLY GUARANTEES THE SAME IDIOTIC, SOCIALIST SUPPORTING, LATIN AMERICAN POLICIES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN IN PLACE.

That might be true; but I think the author of the article doesn't understand Obama. - Tom

This is the worst nomination since Ramsey Clark was nominated (and confirmed) for Attorney General in 1967. What’s next? Jane Fonda for Sec. of Defense?

Obama and Kerry operate in a marxist-socialist mind set. It’s not that they are ignorant of South and Central America, in fact, they are inspired by the rash of marxist-socialist regimes that springs up from Mexico to Argentina. To them, South and Central America are fertile soil to be cultivated.

Kerry will fit in like a good little commie. He licked their boots before and he will do it again.

People in Latin American when given the chance keep voting in socialists. Their standard of living declines, and they vote in more socialists to try to reverse the trend. I don’t think they can understand.

When will we start assigning MALICE as Obama’s motive?

Isn’t it “racist” to suggest his policies are out of ignorance?

He simply continues to surround himself with like minded America haters.

Excellent point. O is fully aware of the consequences of his actions. He is deliberately reducing the power and influence of the U.S. AND HAS SAID SO. He is a Marxist ideologue actively pursuing a program of removing the Constitution from national life and replacing government with oligarchy. His plan is deliberate and intentional. It is supported by every leftist and their dumbed down minions. The only hope is open rebellion. Does not need to be armed insurrection but it does need to be a powerful, insistent and uncompromising damnation of these evil forces.

Obama understands very well what he has done. Too many look at what Obama does from the perspective of what is good for the country. In doing so, it looks like he has no clue about what he is doing.

Change the perspective to the point of view where Obama’s goal is to create chaos and reduce the US to a 3rd world nation and he has been a genius at what he has done. He has created distrust with allies and bowed to our enemies. He has wrecked the economy and expanded the taker class to an unsustainable size. He weakens our military, traditional institutions and families with the acceptance of deviant behavior. He has been systematically trying to kill our energy systems, our sovereignty, our economy and our ability to create wealth. He has basically accomplished everything he said he was going to do in his campaign speeches.
