Some urge Boehner: Let Dems pass fiscal cliff bill
Associated Press ^ | Dec 25, 2012 11:27 AM EST | Charles Babington

In case the public weren’t frustrated enough over Congress’ failure to resolve the “fiscal cliff,” consider this: lawmakers probably could enact a compromise quickly and easily if Republican leaders let Democrats provide most of the votes.

That would give Democrats a bigger voice in the bargain, of course, which the Republican-led House is loath to do. That’s why about 10 percent of the House’s members—staunch anti-tax conservatives—were able to thwart Speaker John Boehner’s bid to pass a narrowly crafted bill that might have strengthened his bargaining hand. …

It’s not known how many House Republicans would vote to avert the “fiscal cliff” by supporting a tax-and-spending plan closer to Obama’s liking. In his re-election campaign, the president called for letting the Bush-era tax cuts expire on incomes above $250,000 for couples and $200,000 for individuals. In later negotiations with Boehner, Obama said he could accept a $400,000 threshold if Republicans agreed to other tax and spending provisions. …

Look at all the addendums on the hurricane Sandy relief bill if you want an example of how SPENDING is the problem.

We don’t have a revenue problem, we have a spending problem.

If there was really a fiscal cliff crisis looming over us, responsible people would be stepping up. I think this is all just political theater. After all, the POTUS doesn’t seem to be engaged.

My left wing brother, a reliable source of radical left talking points, was spouting at Christmas that the "fiscal cliff" wasn't much of a cliff, really more like a curb and besides, after the new year they'd fix the tax situation with a retroactive change. The spending cuts (i.e. defense cuts) would probably stand though.

So there you have it. The libs have been conditioned to think "this is no big deal". We're going over. Obama gets to eliminate the Bush tax cuts, decimate defense, and blame Republicans for the resulting recession. He has no reason to not do this, and many reasons to think it's good. Hold on tight, it's going to get bumpy.

While I am sympathetic to the urge to allow the Utopians to have their way and see it FAIL miserably, they are in fact liars and they will lie their way to the appearance of success. Moreover, the more they are allowed to lie, the more low-information voters believe the lies and the more difficult it will be to ever get back into a position to correct the grave damage that will be done in the mean time.

We only have to look at how long the Bush-fault lie has carried them to see how true this is.

The real concern is whether the Republicans will:
1. Raise the debt limit
2. Remove congressional approval and give the president the freedom to increase the debt limit whenever he wants.

Where is the budget and why isn’t government spenidng at a standstill until a budget is passed? You only need to control the house to control the spending and taxes.

Answer - The republicans do not want a budget nor do they want to curb spending. The left the conservative principles on the side of the road 15 years ago.

Successors to Mr. Boehner are being discussed.
He may be old news soon.
There may be a lot of disgust at his lack of principle, but the bottom line is that if Mr. Boehner stays, all kinds of Republicans will lose in the next election, Governors, Senators and, Representatives.

The “fiscal cliff” stuff is simply the latest example of how broken our government is. The Senate hasn’t passed a budget in 3 years, and the House has been relegated to being in session and finding new ways to point fingers at each other.

We now have the America described by Ayn Rand in Atlas Shrugged. A bloated, corrupt government, union thugs empowered by the POTUS, anti-business environment and phony climate concerns. All we need to complete the picture is Galt’s Gulch!

Obama and the dems for political reasons always wanted to push this to the brink thereby creating a crisis that normally wouldn’t have been.

So let the tax rates expire for everyone and spending cuts begin. ...start from there after the new Congress is installed.

The people voted for another 4 years of this disaster as a president and party, let them feel the consequences.

I agree with all you've said.

The people of America have become invisible to congress and until we rid ourselves of the whole rotten bunch nothing will change. Maybe suffering the consequences of this election out in the open is just what we need.

When people become aware of what is going on by feeling the pain at home the media won't be able to spin it off by saying all is OK and publishing false and glowing reports about Obama.

We are a fews years too late to see a new party with an impact before the nation implodes. I do not expect the republicans to save the nation. They will do what they think they must to save their jobs, but they will not be able to save them.

Boehner is the Dems best friend right now and it would not surprise me if there was a major defection from conservatives that will be offset by dems who know Pelosi can’t win and see Boehner as the next best thing.

Check this out. No wonder the Bamster is flying back to D.C., his credit card has been maxed out!!!

‘U.S. to Hit Debt Limit Monday’

The U.S. Treasury on Wednesday announced the first in a possible series of emergency steps to push back the day when the government will exceed its legal borrowing authority as imposed by the U.S. Congress.
The Treasury said on Dec. 28 it would suspend issuance of State and Local Government Series securities, known as “slugs”, which are special low-interest Treasury securities offered to state and local governments to temporarily invest proceeds from municipal bond sales.
Slugs, which count against the debt limit, have been suspended several times over the last 20 years to avoid hitting the debt ceiling.
The Treasury said it will also begin other measures, such as suspending certain retirement investments, which together will raise $200 billion.
The Treasury said the debt ceiling is set to be reached on Dec. 31, but analysts believe extraordinary measures can stave that date off into February.
