a pall over Boxing Day? the only valid reason for such a pall is the lack of any NHL match ups (especially between teams that hate one another).

I enjoy Downton Abbey immensely. However, except for the technical aspects of the two productions it can't hold a candle to Upstairs/Downstairs.I do wish though that I didn't know of Matthew's fate beforehand.

I’ve had a hard enough time keeping my yap shut to my wife about the inclusion of the Red Wedding in the next season of Game of Thrones. Now this ... sheeesh!

why did you spoil this for many of us. It was cruel and I guess this means I can no longer visit this site if the moderators will allow spoilers like this. You ruined my holidays - Downtown Abby has not been shown here yet.

Re: “It can’t hold a candle to Upstairs/Downstairs.”

I used to feel the same way.

But my local PBS station is currently rebroadcasting the entire Up/Down series.

To my eye, it’s not nearly as spectacular as I remember it.

Or, perhaps I have never gotten over the disappointment of not being a 21 year old college student anymore?

Sorry, glm.

It's on every major Internet news site.

There's no way you would not have heard before January 6.

PBS has already revealed half a dozen plot secrets just in their own promos.

Rays,

Cut me a little slack, OK?

Two “spoiler alerts” and you still read it?

Dan Stevens is already on American TV talking about what he's going to do next.

Only people who live in a bubble can be shielded from this info. I’m a Downton Abbey fan and don’t care about this spoiler info. I’ll still enjoy it.

In case you did not realize that the ‘spoiler info’ would show up on the Browse page, here is what Freepers see. It would be pretty difficult to miss the meat of the message, because of the way you entered it:

“SPOILER ALERT” - Matthew Crowley, Lady Mary’s on-off love interest, is killed behind the wheel of his own car. The shock, according to British papers, has cast a thick pall over Boxing Day.

I'm glad I saw your post before I commented on who else died. The third season is great! I've seen it but can't wait to watch it again next month on PBS.

I wonder if you might be confused. Is your local PBS station broadcasting the *original* (with Gordon Jackson) or the British remake with Jean Marsh? The remake is,I believe, now appearing on many PBS stations (including the ones I get) and what little I've seen of it isn't at all appealing IMO.As for the original,I never saw it as "spectacular" at all.Technically speaking it looks pretty plain and simple...as opposed to Downton which, technically,is clearly "high budget".The beauty of the original Upstairs was the quality of its actors (and writers) and its success in capturing the realism of the age.Gordon Jackson,in particular, was *brilliant* while most of the rest of the cast was only "outstanding".
