KNOX GUN-RIGHTS REPORT Jeff Knox wants parents, grandparents to serve as armed volunteers on campus
With the NRA’s call for an armed police officer in every school, a debate has erupted over cost of such a strategy, but there is a much more efficient and inexpensive path to secure schools. For some reason the teachers’ unions, politicians and school administrators think that teachers are somehow less responsible, less capable and less trainable than those who choose a career in law enforcement, and that having anyone with access to a gun in school besides a uniformed police officer would interfere with children’s ability to learn. Setting aside those confused perceptions for a moment, what about those of us who are not teachers or school administrators? What about parents, grandparents and other concerned citizens?
As the loving grandparent of a wonderful 6-year-old, a veteran, shooter and all-around good guy, my answer to school security is the same as Isaiah’s answer to God thousands of years ago; “Here am I; send me!”
I am competent with firearms. I work well under pressure. I have a proven track record as a responsible and law-abiding citizen, and I have a deep concern for the safety and security of my grandson and the other children who attend his school. I also know that there are literally millions of intelligent, responsible parents, grandparents and concerned citizens just like me who would gladly step up to serve as protectors of their own local schools. All of us are ready, willing and able to fill the security void exposed by the demented coward in Connecticut. We are here. We are available. We are 10 million strong voices, all saying, “Here am I; send me!”

Arm the children!
I’ve been putting together a proposal to send to my congressmen and county sheriff that basically suggests we reinstitute the old west posse. Volunteers who would undergo background checks, training, and qualify with their arms. Little or no cost to schools and police departments. With the millions of firearms enthusiasts in the USA, we should be able to find plenty of people to give one day a month to cover a school or after school event.
Then have two, or three, or four, or eleven.
And plain clothes.
It’s really not that hard to achieve an effective defense.
He would definately be the first target, but wouldn't he be stationed inside the Front door, which would be locked down?
One problem would be when the children are outside during recess, if they still do that. They would be easy targets for an insane sniper.
The idea died when they could not give us a satisfactory answer.
The killer on this deal will be over-regulation. They will want/demand that you register every weapon you own into some database in case you decide to carry it om campus. Great start to get a good record on who owns what.
My brother and I had the same idea. Volunteers. No cost to the school districts and I would be you would have plenty of people sign-up.
My questions are: Would they be paid? If so, by whom? All Volunteer? Perhaps some would opt for just having the Medical/Obamacare paid for.
If one of these were to be hurt/injured on the job, who is liable?
I know there are many who would just do it for FREE, that is noble, but job injury is a matter to be considered by all.
I don't think the Government will ever allow a VOLUNTEER to do this. Only Unions need apply.
Unfortunately, history, read TSA (must federalize to professionalize), shows you are likely correct in this point.
Then again, parents are still allowed to come to the school and watch their kids in the classrooms, etc., is that correct?
Is so, then several and more parents could take turns visiting their children....ARMED of course.
Then too, these parents would have to be very careful who is in their force.
Arm the teachers. Simple, cheap solution!
Possibly. If that is the option I’d still do it. But first I’d make a “gift” of several things to my wife and son. I’d only register what I “owned.”
That was my first thought. Volunteers are the best way, but it will never be given the "official" OK because of liability.
Now the way around that: Any parents is still allowed to come to the school and listen in the classroom, have lunch with their children. Right?
Well then a group of concerned ARMED parents could take turns doing this, no one need be the wiser. I suspect many Principles would welcome this "unofficial" method, no one need be the wiser of what those parents or "volunteers" are doing there.
At all costs, please DO NOT play into the meme that “police and the military are the only ones who can handle guns.” Hogwash!
That way lies martial law, jack-booted thugs and a furtherance of the police state that already scares hell out of a lot of us.
If somebody climbs out of an armored vehicle and kicks in your door wearing a uniform, helmet, body armor and combat boots, and carrying a full-auto weapon, then that is a soldier by anyone’s definition! And if he draws a government paycheck, then that makes him a government soldier.
In other words — a Redcoat. And we’ve had enough of them already.

This is exactly what I (and others) plan to propose here in Newtown when the conversation comes up, that and training/arming willing and able teachers.
