If there is one area of agreement that I may have with Islamists, it is that medieval (sharia) punishment should be meted out for crimes like this. As in, impalement, Romania-style, or crucifixion.

The problem with your post is that for a charge of rape to be proved against a muslim you need five muslim men of ‘good reputation’ to testify against the man in court or else the case gets dismissed. The other problem with islamic justice is that while a convicted rapist will typically be flogged for his crime his victim will almost certainly be executed for committing adultery.

I believe the usual punishment that Islamists have is stoning. Of the woman.

“The patient passed away peacefully at 4:45am on 29 Dec 2012,” This makes it sound so pleasant, not like the result of being raped and murdered! I am pretty sure she would have preferred to have long life with a little suffering instead of what these animals did.

Is it safe to assume that the perps are Muslim, whilst the victim was a Hindu?

This is India. Sharia law does not apply (yet).

Based on their names, they weren't Muslim.

You know, I’ll go through a few weeks or months, where I start to regain hope that there’s some basic goodness in humanity, but sooner or later I’ll come across a story like this that just reaffirms once again, how cheap human life really is.

A dear friend of mine said it best. The only difference between the vast majority of humanity and baboons is that humans have learned to play with fire. That’s all most of “humanity” is. Fire monkeys.
Our favorite, fun-time activities are, in this particular order: (1) Murder - generally the more brutal and horrific, and the higher the body count, the better. Added bonus points if you can justify it in the name of your god.
(2) Torture - not quite as fun as the ultimate rush of murder, but it’s oodles of fun to hear agonized screams and to play with blood and guts.
(3) Rape - It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
(4) Theft - More fun if it can combine elements of 1 through 3.

...sometimes I don’t want to live on this planet anymore. :(

Probably same religion for both.

It doesn't take much for bodies to pile up over religion there, so since the town isn't burnt down, I'm only guessing they were the same.

Not necessarily. It might be high-caste Hindu punks thinking they were immune from response.

The protests that followed, though, seem to indicate the perps were of a group that the average Indian has had enough of. The lack of description of the perps also leads me to this conclusion.

The victim was Hindu. She and her Hindu boyfriend were attacked coming back from a movie.

I know rural Hindus can be quite wierd and very difficult in dealing with women (they’re the ones who are always setting fire to their wives if they’re not happy with the dowry), but this happened in a big city with a significant Muslim population. So were the rapists Hindus or Muslims? Btw, they raped her by shoving an iron bar into her, so there was clearly a lot of hatred there.

The fact that there’s been rioting for days over this leads me to think they were Muslims and this information is being suppressed for political reasons, but I suppose that it’s possible that they were Hindus from the slums who resented the freedom of this young couple. Anybody know?

Do you recall where they were named? I haven't been able to find that info.

Based on the fact that the victim was airlifted to a Singapore hospital, I suspect the New Delhi police were afraid that the rapists had friends who could get to her as long as she was in India.

Err...in Islam, it seems that rapists get away with murder. Meanwhile, the victims are buried up to their necks in sand and then stoned to death.

Not quite accurate

Matters of jurisdiction involving Muslims in India related to marriage, inheritance and wakf properties are governed by the Muslim Personal Law,[8] and the courts have ruled that Sharia or Muslim law, holds precedence for Muslims over Indian civil law in such matters

Which I doubt would apply to a rape case involving a Hindu woman (although I might be wrong).

Interesting, thank you. Initial reports said this group was a “gang,” but it sounds like a rather unlikely gang. They all seem to have been Hindus, of one sort or another. But if their last names do indeed indicate their social standing, I can’t imagine why they would have been riding the bus, let alone attacking other passengers.

This whole thing gets stranger and stranger. But regardless of whether the people in question are Hindu or Muslim, for everybody in India (except Christians), women are lower than dirt.

Islam is at war with the west - always has been, is now. Anyone who is not Muslim is, in practice no better than a westerner.

Unless we stop coddling these slimy vermin and fight them within our own borders as well as in Afghanistan and Iraq
(and considering both countries are still Muslim, we did a pitiful job there), events like this will be everyday occurrences in London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Moscow, New York, Washington D.C., etc.

Islam is a gutter religion for evil and simple minds and those minds need to all be converted or eliminated.

Being of Brahmin caste does not necessarily mean that you are wealthy. I would imagine that someone of a high social caste who was at the economic bottom would be very angry and bitter about his situation.

Here — all Hindu:

Six men have been arrested in connection with the incident: Ram Singh, the bus driver, and his brother, Mukesh Singh, were both arrested in Rajasthan; Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor, was arrested in Delhi,[19] as was Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller; Raju, a minor,[20] who was detained by the police in Budaun, Uttar Pradesh; and Akshay Thakur, a man who had gone to Delhi seeking work, who was arrested in Aurangabad in Bihar.[21][19]

Ram Singh was the first to be arrested, and presented before the Metropolitan Magistrate on 18 December 2012.[22]

Mukesh Singh, who was in Tihar Jail, was assaulted by other inmates and reportedly forced to consume human excreta and urine. Following the incident, jail authorities separated him for his own protection.[23]

I was thinking much the same thing when I heard the news at 0600 today. It was a headline item on Channel News Asia.

On 20 December, the representatives of 111 countries voted at the UN for a moratorium on the death penalty.

I hope that those same representatives are now hanging their heads in shame, because if there was ever a crime for which death was the only just and proper punishment, it is this one.

Ever notice how certain news items suddenly “go over the top” and almost become ubiquitous? I recall how several years ago there seemed to be a constant news focus on shark attacks here in the US. Turned out that the number was not significantly different from other years but suddenly these got the news.

India and certain localities in India appear to having just this kind of news cycle with rape attacks which may or may not be increasing but have come to the top of the news interest. Without any intention of justification, we here in the US have no appreciation of the sheer population pressure in India and that probably has an effect on crimes like these. Add to this the other societal problems with religion, poverty, politics and the ever-present corruption, and you get a problem set that is ‘difficult’!

No matter what the reason, this poor woman has my prayers as do all people who suffer unjustifiable attacks.

Monkeys? No, chimpanzees. Our closest relatives are nasty creatures living in hobbesian tribes. Of course, we had other relatives, which we exterminated. Brahmins in India are kept from good jobs and good college education because of affirmative action( which in india is commonly called reservations based on caste ). Hence most likely they can neither be in highly influential jobs nor have ties to people in such professions that can save them from crimes of this magnitude. There is a bleak chance that this has anything to do with their caste, provided they are the actual criminals.
