If there is one area of agreement that I may have with Islamists, it is that medieval (sharia) punishment should be meted out for crimes like this. As in, impalement, Romania-style, or crucifixion.

The problem with your post is that for a charge of rape to be proved against a muslim you need five muslim men of ‘good reputation’ to testify against the man in court or else the case gets dismissed. The other problem with islamic justice is that while a convicted rapist will typically be flogged for his crime his victim will almost certainly be executed for committing adultery.

I believe the usual punishment that Islamists have is stoning. Of the woman.

“The patient passed away peacefully at 4:45am on 29 Dec 2012,” This makes it sound so pleasant, not like the result of being raped and murdered! I am pretty sure she would have preferred to have long life with a little suffering instead of what these animals did.

Is it safe to assume that the perps are Muslim, whilst the victim was a Hindu?

This is India. Sharia law does not apply (yet).

Based on their names, they weren't Muslim.

You know, I’ll go through a few weeks or months, where I start to regain hope that there’s some basic goodness in humanity, but sooner or later I’ll come across a story like this that just reaffirms once again, how cheap human life really is.

A dear friend of mine said it best. The only difference between the vast majority of humanity and baboons is that humans have learned to play with fire. That’s all most of “humanity” is. Fire monkeys.
Our favorite, fun-time activities are, in this particular order: (1) Murder - generally the more brutal and horrific, and the higher the body count, the better. Added bonus points if you can justify it in the name of your god.
(2) Torture - not quite as fun as the ultimate rush of murder, but it’s oodles of fun to hear agonized screams and to play with blood and guts.
(3) Rape - It’s the gift that keeps on giving.
(4) Theft - More fun if it can combine elements of 1 through 3.

...sometimes I don’t want to live on this planet anymore. :(

Probably same religion for both.

It doesn't take much for bodies to pile up over religion there, so since the town isn't burnt down, I'm only guessing they were the same.

Not necessarily. It might be high-caste Hindu punks thinking they were immune from response.

The protests that followed, though, seem to indicate the perps were of a group that the average Indian has had enough of. The lack of description of the perps also leads me to this conclusion.

The victim was Hindu. She and her Hindu boyfriend were attacked coming back from a movie.

I know rural Hindus can be quite wierd and very difficult in dealing with women (they’re the ones who are always setting fire to their wives if they’re not happy with the dowry), but this happened in a big city with a significant Muslim population. So were the rapists Hindus or Muslims? Btw, they raped her by shoving an iron bar into her, so there was clearly a lot of hatred there.

The fact that there’s been rioting for days over this leads me to think they were Muslims and this information is being suppressed for political reasons, but I suppose that it’s possible that they were Hindus from the slums who resented the freedom of this young couple. Anybody know?

Based on their names, they weren't Muslim.

Do you recall where they were named? I haven't been able to find that info.

Based on the fact that the victim was airlifted to a Singapore hospital, I suspect the New Delhi police were afraid that the rapists had friends who could get to her as long as she was in India.

Err...in Islam, it seems that rapists get away with murder. Meanwhile, the victims are buried up to their necks in sand and then stoned to death.

Not quite accurate

Matters of jurisdiction involving Muslims in India related to marriage, inheritance and wakf properties are governed by the Muslim Personal Law,[8] and the courts have ruled that Sharia or Muslim law, holds precedence for Muslims over Indian civil law in such matters
