Why is it necessary to back up the machine on a regular basis? Rab can but wounder.

You back up the machine so you can at least save your data. The OS and other software can always be reinstalled. Recreating years of documents, spreadsheets, pictures, etc. from scratch is not so easy. Computers do break, and rarely do so at a convenient time.
