No employers do not get a reduction, only employees who actually see the token tax cut.

Happy new year

The 6.2% FICA tax/contribution being reduced by 2%...

Actually the 2 cents not collected on each dollar earned, is an almost one-third deduction in the amount collected from employed people for their FICA contribution. Not a 2 percent deduction.

It is a shame that the word percent is thrown around so easily. It helps politicians and salespersons to bamboozle the unsuspecting public.

Example: When the sales tax in MD was raised one percentage point from 5% to 6% it was called a one percent increase.

Actual increase out of people’s wallets: 16%

We got a world where maybe one out of every one hundred thousand people are allergic to nuts and the whole world has to watch out for them.

Now I got a lady coming to my book club thing next week and she can’t eat gluten. Anybody got any suggestions/experience with this sort of thing?

Put out a bowl of nuts.

I understand that your accountant doubles the amount of FICA withheld. That is how it’s normally done.

Thus you do not, in effect, pay that 2% either.

Oh, and you are NOT “saving” that other 2% not withheld from the employee. You are, rather, sending in 2% less than what was previously being withheld from the employee.

You ARE saving 2% in that your match is 2% less than it was.

Might seem like an extra 4% to you but the 2% you do not send into the gubmint did cost YOU in that it is part of their take-home pay.

As for Kabar, and he can read this if he wants, but he does use macro-economics that blind us with their brilliance and complexity. He said that the employee IS credited for ALL of the salary he/she made even though now taxed 2% less for it.

For now I believe Kabar as a)I’ve no idea as to the answer and b)Kabar is far more likely to know than I.

But Kabar also said that you WERE paying 6.2% of the match which, as you, RG, describe it, you are not.

Who we gonna believ- Kabar and his big flow charts or RG and his lying accountant?

Again, this is not how RG describes it.

And goodness, the man IS running a business and has a payroll.

Great catch maica.

My worry is that its all smoke and mirrors.

Here we are in the last hours of debate over how much to attack the few producers we have left still willing to do business here in the US. Everyone is agonizing over a fiscal cliff since the rats refuse to negotiate. They don't have to. They win politically and that's all they care about.Low info voters are on their side.

In truth, the country owes 16 trillion heading for 20 and we borrow 40-42% of every dollar we spend and the big spenders refuse to discuss spending. Worse yet its OK with the voting public.!!

For me its time to go fishing. At least the fish are sane!

Reducing our armed forces to 500,000 is sheer insanity. It sends a powerful message to our enemies and invites adventurism that makes the world less secure.

The message to our enemies has already been delivered, by the use of the "Leading From Behind" policy and the other actions and inactions we have chosen. And the world is less secure. And we can't afford a large military today; it's not the 1960's anymore and we are not the richest nation in the world. We are doing to ourselves what we did to the Soviet Union in the 1980's.

Any future military action we get into will have to be wisely chosen, with a described end AND an actual national interest for us. We have put ourselves in a situation where we can't answer the phone every time somebody calls 911.

Maybe 500,000 is not the right number, but I was referring to permanent active duty personnel. We have to align our military strength to what we can do, not what we used to be able to do.

Here is how your SS pension is computed. Note that it is based on average indexed monthly earnings, not contributions

It is not the right number. You suggested we reduce our active duty force by a1most 1 million to 500,000. You stated in your post #36, "cut the active-duty military to 500,000;"

We have to align our military strength to what we can do, not what we used to be able to do.

We have been doing that for some time now. Clinton made huge cuts to the military as part of the peace dividend reducing our forces by almost a third. Bush 43 built part of the capability back, but it was not anywhere near where it was under his father, Bush 41. We couldn't do an Operation Desert Storm today. We have changed our force structure from fighting two wars at one time to one and one-half to something even less than that today.

Great nations in decline don't immediately reduce their forces signficantly. It is phased in over time rationalizing each step but actually forced by funding shortages. The UK went thru the same thing with their no forces East of Suez and subsequent and continuing cuts in its forces. Western Europe has been doing the same thing with countries spending about 1% of GDP on defense. They had the luxury of the US providing the security umbrella. Today, NATO is really a hollow shell. The welfare state demands more and more money to keep it going. Defense is an easy target.

Next comes ever increasing taxes. The US has a ways to go in that regard. Our people have not experienced European level taxation with its VATs and other fees like paying a television and radio tax for every one of those you own (Germany). Once Obamacare gets going, you will see more pressure for a VAT and cap and trade. There will also be more means testing of government benefits. Still, it will not be enough to fund the welfare state. It will consume everything until it collapses.

Before I retired from the USAF, we had 2.1 million in uniform.

Half a million is a “Kick Me” and no money for hardware sign on America’s backside.

Happy New Year

Yep. The military has been in decline for some time. We try to rationalize it thru better weapons, a more professional force, etc. But there is no doubt that our conventional warfare capabilities are not what they were 20 or thirty years ago. And there is also no doubt that the Chinese capabilities are increasing.

Not that my opinion is worth a hill of beans, but I thought the segment was very well done, and in fact, took nowhere near 45 minutes; maybe 10-12 max.

Gluten intolerance is quite real and rather painful. Ask her to bring her own snack as you know nothing about gluten. Not that I am insulting you, it’s not as uncommon as it used to be, and you would both be more comfortable.
She should not expect you to conform to her dietary issue, it’s her issue.
End of story.
