Where'd my catch go? (great white is gobbled by an EVEN BIGGER )

Being hooked by a fisherman is probably up there with the worst things that could happen to a shark. But what about becoming bait for an even bigger beast as you're being hauled into the boat?

This was the fate of a poor great white in New Zealand this week.

And a spectacular photograph of the encounter, which shows Charles Darwin's survival of the fittest - or perhaps biggest - theory in action, has taken the web by storm after it was posted on Reddit.

The larger shark, also a Great White, had obviously decided he'd be the one to gobble the fish up.

It is unclear exactly what happened next, though the fisherman presumably cut his losses and the line, losing his catch.

However, he did escape with the epic image, which immediately shot to Reddit's front page and has garnered also 1000 comments since.

It's not uncommon for sharks to prey upon each other, but it's rarely caught in such a daring fashion.

Now we know what it looks like to be bait for such a beast, it's probably best not to go swimming too far from the New Zealand coast any time soon.

“And, you know, the thing about a shark... he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn’t seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white...”

Agreed. Here is an e- mail I sent friends earlier:
It’s not a white. It has a blue shark shaped tail - and if I see the long pectoral fin correctly, it looks like a blue to me. Also it has a blue shark snout. - tom

Certainly nothing of any great size.
I read about two guys fishing out of SF bay who had
caught two sharks about that size and had them tail
roped to the stern of their boat when something came
up and grabbed one and started towing their boat
backwards, they had to cut them loose.
Have seen pix of pacific whites over twenty five feet
long. Biggest I ever caught was about five feet.

Hammerheads migrating down the N.C. coast.
One got underneath our 17' boat.
It was just short of the same length.

Years ago while on a fishing trip to Canada, I hooked a very large walleye (excellent eating fish). Attempting to reel in the beauty, a VERY LARGE northern pike swallowed the walleye. After a lengthy battle, I was fortunate to have landed BOTH fish. The walleye weighed 7 lbs. and the norhtern pike weighed 27 lbs. Combined weight 34 lbs.
I have photos somewhere but too lazy to seek them out as evidence.

As I mentioned in an earlier post I thought it was a blue shark. I just now got an answer from a friend who is a shark biologist.

Hi Capt. Tom,

Definitely a blue shark.

Thanks,
John
