‘50 Shades of Grey’ Is The Subject Of A Course At American University

Sex educator and American University adjunct professor Stef Woods didn't see "mommy porn" when she first heard buzz about the E.L. James erotic romance bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey. Having taught college classes on activism and social media and sexuality and social media, Woods found the combination of number of books sold, media hype, and issues related to female sexuality, fan fiction, and social media compelling enough to successfully propose “Contemporary American Culture: The 50 Shades Trilogy,” which she will teach to 25 students starting in January.

“It never crossed my mind to use another book for a case study,” she wrote on her blog, City Girl. The class already has a waiting list, and is filled mostly with senior honors students (22 or 23 of whom, according to Woods, are female). “No other contemporary text on sexuality has transformed American culture the way that this series has."

In her blog post, Woods outlined several key areas the curriculum will cover, with students answering questions such as “Evaluate the relationship in the book in light of our readings on domestic violence. Are the leads in the trilogy in a healthy or abusive relationship? Why or why not?” and “What was the role of social media in perpetuating the trilogy's success? If you were in charge of marketing the upcoming movies, how would you utilize social media?” Students will be forced to read, write, and analyze critically.

Contrary to a USA Today claim that they’ll be rewriting the first 150 pages, students will instead be asked to rewrite one of the introductory chapters, before Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey consummate their relationship, with an aim to improving it.

and this course is funded through student loans?

A book that most people have never heard of and probably never will, and many wish they hadn’t heard.

I am sure employers are lining up to hire these graduates.

As atrocious as the books are their rise is a legitimate thing to study. The fact that fan-fic on the internet could develop such a following that it eventually gets published as books, books that sell almost as well as the books they were fan-ficing, is a pretty significant evolution in how media is developed and distributed. Bummer that it happened with such bad writing, but an interesting event in its own right.

Yes, most people have heard of this novel. Believe me, they have. They are making a movie of it. I was in the bookstore the other day and picked up a copy and opened the book to a random chapter and read a random paragraph. The writing was bad. It read like fan fiction on a fanboy site.

Sad to say, but this school is my alma mater. Ever time I think our society has hit bottom, there’s a little more way to go. God help us.

I have several friends who recommended it. My wife actually read it and liked it. I got a couple dozen pages into it and literally got so bored I fell asleep - three different times trying to get to the “just wait, it gets better” part. Yawn, no, I don’t think it does. Boring read, poor style. Unless we get snowed in and I run out of firearms to clean & lube... Then again, this one would be #1 on my list - to use to start a fire in that case.

I’ve read most of the first one-—it is promoting anal sex. It is to normalize homosexual behavior. It glorifies and dwells on perversion—but particularly anal sex.

Children naturally equate anal activity with feces-—so there is still conditioning of the minds of our young who need to be able to join in the Satanic orgies of the Bohemian grove homosexuals and Hollywood types-—who Corey Feldman claimed were all pedophiles-—since he was used and passed around in their orgies.

They are trying to flip our Ethics from the Judeo-Christian one-—to a Satanic/occult/atheist/Marxist/muslim worldview where sodomy is glorified since it is such an assault on God’s Creation and the natural use of the body.

Glorifying homosexual “unions” is glorifying evil, sick, unnatural use of the body. It is irrational and unnatural, besides being evil. Destroy Virtue in people-—like it was in homosexual Rome-—and you will destroy civil society. Pederasty is always a part of homosexual culture—since it is a learned and practiced activity-—like in the Samurai and all ancient cultures and in Afghanistan today.’

Schools and media are trying to force normalization of anal sex. They are doing a very thorough job. Children are learning that Evil is Good by what they are watching on most TV and what is taught in schools (moral relativism).

This is being forced on our children by the Hollywood elite/the One Worlders. They need to kill God. Children with no strong moral principles are never people like Lincoln, W. Wilberforce, Washington, Jefferson, Patton, and Churchill. Without moral giants and leaders—we will be destroyed. Machiavelli in his Discourses on Livy stated that it is particularly important to have a moral military. Now Vice (sodomy) was made “normal” in our military. It was to destroy morality in our troops. The good will drop out or be forced to take “pride” in sodomizing others—destroying Judeo-Christian Ethics.

People with no morality are led by emotions. They have no Virtue. They are good for herd mentality and group think. It is why the Founders stated that with no Virtue—there will be no Freedom.

Cultural Marxists attacked all our institutions in the US—esp. starting in the 50’s with Marcuse to destroy the family and target the children in the public schools and with TV. Sex Education is the easiest method to corrupt children.

Read and liked 50 Shades of Grey however don’t think it should be a course in college. College costs are rising and people go in debt to be taught such frivolity.

From your link:

"Reasoning that if Christian sexual ethics could be undermined among children, then both the hated patriarchal family and the Church would be dealt a crippling blow, Lukacs launched a radical sex education program in the schools. Sex lectures were organized and literature handed out which graphically instructed youth in free love (promiscuity) and sexual intercourse while simultaneously encouraging them to deride and reject Christian moral ethics, monogamy, and parental and church authority. All of this was accompanied by a reign of cultural terror perpetrated against parents, priests, and dissenters."

This is exactly what SEICUS, Planned Parenthood, the NEA and the CDC have been pushing for the last 20+ years.

We are suffering from an ever-present moral and cultural infection.

It is amazing to see that women flock to reading this trash, and do not realize it is simply a cover for the promotion of pedophilia.

Way to go, feminists!

I read them & liked them knowing full well they are not in any way great lierature. I AM completely baffled as to how you equate them w/ pedophilia. Did you just completely make that up from thin air?

In fact the whole “plot” is about how children are messed up by uncaring/ sick people & the main chracter is determined to never let that happen to another child. It in NO way glorifies pedophilia.

Like the book or hate it, I repsect that, but don’t just falsely say it promotes soemthing it most definitely does not.

Yes, I totally agree with you.

I read the trilogy and enjoyed the books. My take was much like yours and I must add, that with love and understanding even the most messed up can find happiness. In the last book of the trilogy, Anna and Christian found true happiness and were building a beautiful family together. The last scene brought tears to my eyes as a badly scared yet highly driven young man found that with love and understanding, he could overcome his past and be a terrific father and husband.

There was no pedophilia involved. The ignoramuses in the MSM who have called it “Mommy Porn” are way off base. In my opinion, it is quite simply, a love story.

HOWEVER, I find it absurd for a College to offer a class on this. Parents should be outraged.
