A new draft of a 75-page Army handbook for troops heading to Afghanistan says that American cultural insensitivity is to blame for the 63 attacks this year by Afghan soldiers against the U.S.-led coalition forces who are training them.
According to the Wall Street Journal, who obtained an advance copy of the controversial document, the draft manual states that:
"Many of the confrontations occur because of [coalition] ignorance of, or lack of empathy for, Muslim and/or Afghan cultural norms, resulting in a violent reaction from the [Afghan security force] member," according to the draft handbook prepared by Army researchers.
In 2012, U.S.-led coalition forces suffered 63 so-called “green on blue” attacks, the term used to describe Afghan soldiers attacking the very people training them. Over three dozen of those attacks were fatal.
“What the Army is saying, in effect, is that if Afghan partners conduct violence against U.S. service personnel, it is the serviceman’s fault,” says retired Adm. James A. Lyons, former commander in chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. “This is mind-boggling.”

Because in the 7 years of combat before Obama came along, THERE WAS NOT A SINGLE GREEN ON BLUE FATALITY in Afghanistan.
EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE DEATHS has occurred since Obama became president.
What we need is a Congressional investigation into what changes were made to the Rules of Engagement under Obama and what impact his publicly setting a date of withdrawal had on the insurgency in Afghanistan...
Maybe we need some special ops hug therapy soldiers to come host build-a-bear workshops with the Tahl-lee-ban.
In other words, when a GI is murdered, he deserved it.

Lack of killing people who try to kill you causes US soldier casualities. Throw the stupid book away, and get down to business. That’s what our military does best. No one here will fault them for doing their job.
The same Army that is now importing openly gay people into Muslim countries is suddenly worried about “cultural sensitivity”.
Peel back the onion on the staffing and drafting process of this manual and you will undoubtedly find a line of subject matter expert muslims giving guidance and signing off on the wording.
Another case of cultural relativists using passive aggression and lefty social hocus-pocus to turn the military into a crypto social service.
Who but the very most cynical soldiers could stand taking orders from such smug high-brows?

The Military has become politicized.
Yes, political pressure and influence was always there, but now all the political cliches, correctness and social causes of DC’s ruling elite have washed over the military as well.
The lingua franca in this part of the world is violence. The more we shift our language from violence (the traditional stock in trade of militaries all over the world) to “understanding the enemy”, the more clearly those enemies speak back to us, using violence.
Why would we gain greater compliance and mutual understanding by then AGAIN trying to, “understand” them?
“The definition of insanity is where you try the same thing over and over again, expecting a different result”.
Admittedly they do hump boys and burros, but come now:

Any army that is not dedicated to killing the enemy and breaking his stuff should come home. Any government that sends an army out with any goal other than total victory should be abolished as unfit to lead.
Nope. It’s the stupidity and self-aggrandizement of the generals and admirals.
Soo, everyone who died....it was their own fault. Or their squad’s fault. Or their division’s fault. Or the American People’s fault...
This is revolting.
They hate us. They are violent. They should be left in their own sandbox. Every American needs to leave there and come home.

So when a Muslim decides to take out a bunch of US lawmakers and a bunch of the cocktail party circuit Generals, it will be due to their (the lawmakers and generals) ignorance and lack of empathy?

I was an adviser with the ANA a few years ago and can tell you there is an element of truth that Westerns have been tone deaf. But it was only that, an element. On the flip side, many more advisers performed well and some performed brilliantly. I saw a young TSgt teach 6 Afghan counterparts pretty good English by sipping tea with them and using a Rosetta Stone knock off CD he bought for a few Afghanis at a bazaar. We also had a couple of master degree totting O’s that had to be sent to work staff jobs because they just couldn’t deal with people that looked, ate and thought differently.
That said the Army blaming our overall failure on insensitivity is an enormous cop-out. Wars aren’t lost or won for a single reason but the largest part of our failure is a lack of commitment most visibly identified by setting a fixed date for withdrawing. Americans and our ISAF allies get to go home someday no matter how the war ends. Individual Afghans and their families have to have to stay and most of them know from painful experience that you don’t want to have been on the wrong side after a civil war ends.
Other huge blunders include doing away with the Former Soviet Union conscript based rank structure and substituting a Western professional military model. One day a man with 20 or more years in the forces was a Captain, the next he was a Staff Sergeant (a rank formerly held by draftees that had finished high school). I could also go on about many other failings.
Just a handful of other missteps that I saw…Buying over sophisticated weapons systems for them. Taking 3 to 4 years to build an IFR Air Force instead of putting some pretty good VFR aircrews to work today….
In the end, it comes down to weak/undeceived political and military leadership.
Actually it’s ingorance and lack of sanity - among the CIC. and politicians in general - far too many Generals fit the same bill...
