Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods: U-T’s 2012 Persons of the Year
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 12/31/2012

They died defending us all

Navy SEALs — resourceful, courageous, devoted and disciplined — represent the best qualities of our community and our nation. Whether in high-profile operations like tracking down and killing Osama bin Laden or strategic efforts like seizing and preserving power plants in the opening days of the Iraq War in 2003, Navy SEALs are the silent professionals whose sacrifices protect our values and our nation. It is our privilege that so many of these special forces are trained at the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado.

When something goes horribly wrong — as it did in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11-12 — and SEALs die as a result, it leaves us with a deep sense of remorse and an obligation to honor their sacrifices.

That was our reaction to the deaths of Glen Doherty, 42, of Encinitas, and Tyrone Woods, 41, of Imperial Beach, former SEALs turned CIA contractors who were killed after hours fighting heavily armed terrorists who had already succeeded in killing U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and information officer Sean Smith, who also had roots in San Diego.

It is why U-T San Diego has chosen to honor Doherty and Woods as our Persons of the Year for 2012.

True heroes both. Not the usual highly paid athletes or narcissistic politicians.

REST IN PEACE, FALLEN BROTHER!

POC (Seal) Tyrone S. Woods, USN (Ret.) KIA Libya 11Sep2012

I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV)

Eternal Father, Strong to Save

Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in peace!
We who remain hold you in high honor.
Rest, fallen brother, in this sacred precinct;
We who remain keep this place sacred.
Rest, fallen brother, among these, your comrades;
We who remain keep the watch.
Rest, fallen brother, amid these who heeded the Nation’s call;
We who remain press the fight forward in your name.
Rest, fallen brother, lay down thy burden;
We who remain have taken up the torch.
Rest in Peace, fallen brother, rest in eternal peace!

Taps

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Did they all get awarded the CMH posthumously?

None of the three have been awarded anything as far as I am aware. The ribbon bar is a heading I use on many of my military-related graphics.

I think Woods and Doherty both deserve a decoration for their bravery - not being active duty, they get nothing. If I were POTUS, I'd call them back to active duty posthumously and order the appropriate decoration to issue.

Thank you for the tributes.....no one else seems to care. Amen to their heroism......THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE MOST ADMIRED. It is just sad that this nation has become so ignorant and self centered. I guess it comes from the top down.

I'm reminded of the Irish song "Kelly from Killane."

"And Alas! gallant Wexford hung high on a cross,
Given over to traitors and slaves!"

We live in a world truly turned upside-down. I dread what is in store for my children - this is not the great Nation it was in my youth.

Here is a quote from the history making events of May 23, 1994.

“””American television networks interrupted their programming to bring live coverage of the Onassis funeral and burial, interspersed with historical footage from the Kennedy years. Earlier in the day, thousands of mourners stood behind police barricades outside the private funeral in New York.

President Bill Clinton, long an admirer of President Kennedy and more recently an acquaintance of Mrs. Onassis, offered a brief graveside eulogy, saying: “God gave her very great gifts and imposed upon her great burdens.......”””

President Clinton chose to take care of a chore that very same morning, it naturally received no coverage, which reduced the need of the media to mention the situation and events that led to the chore needing to be done.

“”On May 23, 1994, both Gordon and Shughart posthumously received the Medal of Honor”-”the first Medal of Honor recipients since the Vietnam War. Their medals were presented to their wives Stephanie Shugart and Carmen Gordon by President of the United States Bill Clinton in a ceremony at the White House.””

Smart scheduling dude.

Those men were lions in battle! Confronted with great peril, they ran to the sound of the guns. They fought valiantly for hours while the quislings in the White House situation room looked on and did nothing. They should be celebrated as American Heroes no less than active duty servicemen who are awarded our highest decorations for Valor.

The conduct of the current Regime is absolutely despicable, beneath contempt, and is an insult to the brave men and women who have stepped up to the plate when our Nation called. Yes, I'm bitter - I never thought I'd see such a systemically cynical, traitorous, and evil cadre in control of our Executive Department.

Thank you for this article, these men deserve these honors, and so much more... I pray that in 2013 the truth will be told and this administration will be held accountable...
