Washington (CNN) – House GOP sources told CNN the House is increasingly unlikely to vote on any fiscal cliff package until New Year's Day, after the midnight deadline and after tax rates have technically already gone up.
The reason is partly about process, but the benefit is political.

Bump
Well, neither will the Senate...
Why all the fuss about midnight if it didn’t even matter and the Senate could vote on January first?
GOP leaders prefer to vote in broad daylight, sources said, instead of in the middle of the night.
“There is no difference in voting at 2 a.m. than tomorrow at 4 p.m.,” one of the GOP sources said.
GOP sources admitted there is an added benefit to the Senate’s delay: taxes would already be up, so lawmakers could argue that they are voting for tax cuts, as opposed to tax increases.
Puh-leeze. Enough of the ‘optics’, we’ve seen enough already. I can’t believe someone would say that...must be RINO advisors...and we saw how well that turned out last election.
If you are taking your time to actualy read every word and CONSIDER the bill, that’s the message the people should be hearing, not some wordsmithing about we’re now voting for tax cuts. And while you’re at it, throw some spending cuts in there, vote on them and send it back.
Because 0bama knows how much of a stickler the GOP is about deadlines and attempted to force them into giving the Socialists everything they wanted without anything in return which is exactly what will happen AFTER they all turn into pumpkins anyway. It’s a foregone conclusion the GOP will cave. Caving is their business, and business is good!
This has all been a sham.
I’m praying that the House rejects the entire deal! They need to get more vocal and let the American public know that this entire mess was caused by the turkey in the White House! Spend, spend, spend!!! We’re out of money!!! The job market is shot!!! Those who are hiring are only offering 30 hour work weeks due to Obamacare! The whole world is upside down!!! ENOUGH!!!!!
“GOP sources admitted there is an added benefit to the Senate’s delay: taxes would already be up, so lawmakers could argue that they are voting for tax cuts, as opposed to tax increases”
They are such scum-all of them.
I’m sensing a party in the wilderness moment starting (and I don’t mean the Democrats).
It’s more exciting theater if there’s a ticking time bomb than if the hero can take his time showing up to the scene.
>> Democrats would likely oppose any effort to amend the measure to make it more to GOP liking.
Democrats on a scorched Earth mission to serve their sick, puerile fantasies.
Wait until the new representatives are seated.A lame duck vote is not acceptable
I’m sick to my stomach being played by both sides. Whatever happened to the GOP promise to CUT taxes, vote on a real budget, cut entitlements, etc. i willo go to bed tonight praying there are still a few brave souls left in the House.
Not that laws matter anymore, but these criminals are no longer holding elected office. Game over end of 2012. Newly elected Congress takes it from here.
Always looking for new ways to lie and talk out both sides of their mouths.
This is as bad as the "close loopholes and cap deductions" for $800B in "revenue" crap Boehner was offering Ubama, as if that's not a tax hike. If you take $800B from the private sector and dump it down the big government toilet, it's a freaking tax hike. (And by the way, Grover Norquist can drop dead, too.)
I am up to here with all the lies.
LOL, Guess what, that deadline passed >1 hour ago.
Big deal.
I thought terms in the House and Senate expired at midnight.
It's all been show. They know they can make it retro...they've done it several times before and this is no different. The American public is once again being manipulated.
January 3rd.
Well if they are going over the cliff anyway then the house should take their time, muck up the works and not even vote until it is amended and includes spending cuts. Without spending cuts this is just a meaningless load of crap.
This is being done on a holiday whether its in the daylight or the middle of the night.
Here in PA our state legislature and the leaders of both parties used the July 4th holiday weekend back in 2005 to vote themselves, judges and other government officials pay raises of 16 percent.
The back room business as usual politicians will get the votes together to pass the dirty deal and give members who feel threatened by the Tea Party grassroots patriots the ability to vote NO.
The NO votes on this need more pressure than the YES ones because they must put conservative words and talk into conservative action.
The majority of the GOP that will likely oppose this deal must be a majority to replace liberal GOP leaders or form their own conservative caucus.
If they can’t or won’t, they are phony and blowing smoke to us folks back home.
What is the source of your optimism? THIS House will cave in. Boner has to have this finished before the new congress is sworn in. Why? Fewer republicans and more new conservatives who will not vote for this crap. There is no time to amend and revote. Whatever the Senate passes Boner will twist arms to get passed.
Just heard from Brown’s office that they are voting at 1:40.
The House will pass it. There are good things in it as it stands. Obama caved to the 400/450k limit. AMT is gone permenantly. The cuts come later and they will.
The House will pass it. There are good things in it as it stands, such as it is. Obama caved to the 400/450k limit. Give him that much. AMT is gone permanently. The cuts come later and they will.
You must be Boner in disguise. Name ONE SINGLE TIME the cuts (real cuts) came later. I have ocean front property in Kansas I bet I can sell you.
Not holding my breath but this part had to be done.
Call me all the names you want. The fact remains that this part needed to be passed and we are not going to get everything we want right now in this bill.
Rhinelander - I agree, its a good start. If the House throws in a few more things the public really likes this could be a good start. I would ask for ending ‘child tax credits for illegals’ and pay raises for Gov’t employees. It would be hard for the RATs to turn down those two items in the face of public opinion.
Oh certainly. Hell I’d call for dissolving SSI and SSDI. Preserve SS for what it was meant for, turn Medicrap all back to the states.
There’s still going to be a 20 trillion dollar plus debt by the end of this decade.
Spare me the drama about “cuts.”
We’ve all learned by now that Washington’s “cuts” aren’t really “cuts.”
If they were real cuts, we would have a balanced budget by now in this country.
But notice we don’t and won’t with the GOP business as usual crowd in charge.
My own senator Pat Toomey proposed a balanced budget ten years down the road and Paul Ryan’s much ballyhooed ideas put the balanced budget ten years plus down the road.....
Yeah, it’s all reductions in the amount of increase. Sickening reality. Not only do ‘entitlements’ need to be really cut but entire departments need to be cut.
‘Tis not a name but a fact that has been ignored for decades. Enjoy your pragmatic waltzes and rule of men.
Mitchy called Biden so he could ride in on a white horse, you couldn’t see the white horse because his teeth were so white everyone was blinded. Way to go, Mitchie! God knows I despise these people.
Wisconsinlady, I’ve decided not to bother God with prayers about these crooks in government. Apparently He doesn’t care one way or the other. So I’ll use my prayers to ask that His will be done and that I be able to accept whatever His will is.
Heard Krauthiemer(sp?) say the same thing this evening. Nearly tossed my supper. Just another reason why I find ALL politicians such loathsome bastards.
What color is the sky in your world?
None the less, there’s some truth to it. I can’t believe how meny people here talk like the GOP has a choice between raising taxes or not. The truth is they cannot stop a tax increase. Maybe some folks finally get that the choice is between higher taxes for a small percentage of top earners or tax increases on everyone. Of course they agreed to the whole “fiscal cliff” deal in the first place because everyone thought we would have a pub president and congress. If we did it would have been brilliant. Oh well...
Puh-leeze. Enough of the optics, weve seen enough already. I cant believe someone would say that...must be RINO advisors...and we saw how well that turned out last election.
When the media owns the message and are in the tank for The Won, every little bit the Republicans can do to get their message through is helpful. I am amazed that we actually got to see and hear a member of Congress criticize the president's fiscal cliff "speech" yesterday.
I need to go into the Physic business. All year long I have ranted about the GOP and how they are the go along to get along party and a few days ago I posted this reply on FR:

All of this over the cliff garbage is just that.
The Republicans caved in weeks ago and are waiting until the very list hour to finally make it public so that it will look like they fought almost to the death to capitulate to the enemy (Democrats).
In that way, they can say they did the best they could.
I expect the breakthrough..(ie. cave in) to occur about 11 pm on the final day before the cliff is reached.
