By a vote of 89 to 8 to approve a fiscal deal, the Senate demonstrated that President Obama surely is the most incompetent if not counterproductive deal-maker in an era that requires a good one. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Vice President Biden found the middle ground, with McConnell sneaking in a few gems.

This is what compromise looks like.

The vote once again shows that right-wing bullies like the Heritage Action Fund that threatened to score the vote (i.e., give lawmakers a demerit and set them up for primary challenges) are powerless in the face of real-world choices.

Only Five Republicans voted against the bill:
Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)
Mike Lee (R-Utah)
Rand Paul (R-Ky.)
Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)
Richard Shelby (R-Ala.)
Missing the vote:
Sens. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.)
Mark Kirk (R-Ill.)
I just need to know where to send the money. Its time for SD Senator timmy johnson to come home too
of such events are quasi credentials of Conservative orthodoxy forged in Illinois!
If the Tea Party has any power, this man needs to be ejected. Can KY pull it off?
She is right on the money on this one. This was “the best” deal possible in current DC climate. If the House GOP passed the $1 million threshold plan B, then the outcome could have been slightly better.
We can primary our side all we want. It will lead to shrinking Senate minority.
If the House passes this bill, they ought to add an amendment with all the necessary spending cuts. Then let it go a conference and let the real negotiations begin. If the Senate bill is the only law to come out of these “negotiations”, the Republican Party will be close to disbanding. McConnell has been made a fool. $16 trillion dollar deficit, continued $3 billion a day of deficit spending, trillions more in state and municipal debts as well as $100 trillion in unfunded entitlements, and rational people are supposed to be scared of a “fiscal cliff”?
Yesterday I predicted the GOP sycophants would be out telling us almost verbatim what you just said.
Folks, THIS is why the conservative movement can do nothing. It is full up with excusemakers for failure.
In the Year 1776, those this historically-ignorant writer of the Year 2012 calls "right-wing bullies" constituted what Thomas Jefferson called "the American mind" from whose wisdom came that revolutionary document which changed the world--the Declaration of Independence. Those "right=wing bullies" proclaimed that neither King George III, nor any other individual or set of individuals had the right to violate their unalienable Creator-endowed rights.
"All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately. . . ." -- Thomas Jefferson, letter to Roger C. Weightman, 1826

RINO begone!
I resent treating this country and its finances like a game of chance. It’s tacky.
Failure was losing the Presidential election and losing a seat in the Senate. That is the failure. Averting tax hikes on as many Americans as possible after failing in November is NOT the failure.
RINO begone! Failure is NOT cutting spending, dillweed.
The only solution is to make the case to the people before they go to the Ballot boxes, and before then nominating people who can make that case to a majority of Americans. Having failed at that this election cycle, all we can expect our side to do is get “as much as possible”. Wait 2014. Wait 2016.
Failure is going against your voter base, voting for liberalism and making unsupportable excuses for why it was ‘the best’ one can hope for.
Leaders DO, not ‘HOPE. One would think people figured out that HOPE is only a winning strategy if you vote lib. But I guess not.
So please, keep on HOPEing that one day, probably REAL SOON NOW, a Republican will suddenly find his balls and do the right thing for his country and the people.
No one ever promised the right thing would be easy, pain free or even in anyone’s short term interest.
/johnny
Funny how you resort to calling names, but don’t explain how the GOP could have done better (legislatively speaking).
Absolutely the fault of the GOP-E. The GOP needs to cease to exist.
/johnny
Go away RINO gnat.
And a big part of the GOPE is the shills that keep supporting them end empowering them to sodomize us at every opportunity.
Take away their support and you take away their power.
As in sitting on their hands.
/johnny
I don’t know if this is the best deal we could have reached, but Democrats and RINOs thoroughly control both the senate and the presidency. I don’t know what some conservatives expect. Does anyone seriously believe President Obama is going to (ever) cut entitlements???
Tell me what constitutional anything stops Boehner from not funding Obama’s marxism.
Is he the head of the house? Are Repubs the majority? Do they create all bills that FUND Obama?
When you can tell me that Bohner and the house have to fund Obama, and prove it, you have an argument.
Conservatives expect conservative outcomes without “power” in the Senate and the Presidency. Ain’t going to happen. Win elections first! I am going to wait for 2014.
Mitch and JonJon couldn’t find a set at a Rocky Mountain Oyster festival.
Could you wait somewhere else? This is a conservative site.
Very right. The cure for this problem is to turn public opinion into our policy direction. That can’t happen in the lame duck session with tax hikes looming on everyone. Look at it another way. All Bush tax cuts were always at risk. Now, they have been made permanent for 99.4% of tax payers. Well, that is a step in our direction.
My children will both be adults and own their own (I hope) in eight years. They face being the generation that pays off $25 Trillion in debt as they being their lives. The economic realities that they face is not nearly as bad as the freedoms and liberties that they will never know.
We need to oust all RINOs either through primaries or through a third party. We need to start now.
If 99.4% is better for you than 100%... I don't want to go in the direction you are headed.
/johnny
Congress controls purse strings. They should use that power during Debt ceiling and 2013 budget legislation. I won’t mind a government shutdown. Before then, the House should pass what Steve Forbes suggested (de-couple debt servicing, Medicare/SS, payments to current recipients).
The GOP controls the House of Representatives. They own this.
/johnny
You know that it’s really bad when Mitch and Rimshot Joe have to ride to the rescue.
Untill we oust the people from the movement that continually push us in a RINO direction and excuse failure, we are going nowhere.
Eventually people will realize this. The enemy within is always the biggest problem.
I have screamed it on thread after thread.
BHONER HOLDS THE POWER OF THE PURSE.
All the billions to terrorist countries, all the BS spending in Washington DC is all on him and the House GOP.
PERIOD.
If they do not auth the money, or the borrowing, where does Obama get it to do his whatever?
He doesn’t.
But no one wants to admit this has ALWAYS been the GOP’s problem. Obama can’t do poop without them giving him money to wipe with.
The shills have told me both in the same post, right here on FR.
I smell fear.
/johnny
You do realize, I hope, that broader tax-hikes just happened as a result of previous Congressional actions, and will stay in effect unless Congress passes something.
Quite frankly, I think the House should pass a bill embodying exactly the tax provisions of the McConnell deal, and just for kicks adding the abolition of the AMT and a Romney-style cap on deductions at some fairly high amount, say $100K (let the Senate try stripping it out and forcing a conference committee), and refuse to pass anything else, letting the sequestration cuts take place and the debt ceiling remain exactly where it is.
As long as the GOP exists, people have an excuse. “We can’t NOT vote for them cuz the dems will have all the power!!!”
Newsflash: They do now.
This was the fear that drove so many to back/vote Romney. They all admitted it openly.
Look at this thread. Fear. We can’t. We have to. Not ‘we have to save ourselves. Nope. We ‘have’ to keep voting for failure so we have an excuse.
Gutless. Pure gutless. It’s the same crap I read about the border fence by ‘conservatives’. Oh we can’t. My business will be hurt!’ To HELL with your business. Your freaking family and everyone elses is about to become communist you damn fools!
But no. As long as they can blame someone else for their OWN failure, they will grab a hammer in one hand, a sickle in the other and march off to do the work of ‘the people’.
Makes me sick. But it is what it is. People’s actions show them for who and what they are.
The spending will be addressed with the debt limit, coming soon, and in which we have more bargaining power. If they're bold this could be a nice win
Pretty good actually ;)
Then again I have been branded a traitor to my country for not supporting Romney with feverant zeal so I can deal with it I guess.
Mitch and JonJon couldn’t find a set in a San Fran Gay Pride March!
