Journal News hires armed security guards

The Journal News of West Nyack, N.Y., has hired armed security guards to defend its offices after receiving a torrent of phone calls and emails responding to the paper's publication of the names and addresses of area residents with pistol permits.

RGA Investigations, a private security company, "is doing private security at on location at the Journal News as a result of the negative response to the article," according to a police report first obtained by the Rockland County Times (Nanuet, N.Y.) and shared with POLITICO. The guards "are armed and will be on site during business hours through at least January 2, 2013."

Last month, in the wake of last month's elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., the Gannett-owned Journal News published interactive maps showing the names and addresses of pistol permit holders in New York's Westchester and Rockland counties. Conservatives and gun rights advocates publicly protested the paper's move; on Monday, the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association called for a nationwide boycott of the paper's advertisers, calling it a “wanton act” that “has put in harm's way tens of thousands of lawful license holders."

The Journal News continues to host the map on its website and has said that it will soon add a map listing all pistol permit holders in the County. (Snip)

Why doesn’t the newspaper declare their offices a Gun Free Zone and hold drills with all of the employees so that they know how to huddle in a corner and wait to be slaughtered. That’s what they want schoolchildren to do, but I guess that’s not good enough for them.

Let’s hope they spend $150k+ and have to fire 2-4 reporters to compensate the newsroom budget. A-holes! You asked for it. Eat it, with some “navy gravy”!

I see. Guns are bad and evil, especially in the hands of private citizens. But guns are OK when in the hands of private... er... private... uh... How do you spell hypocrisy again, Caryn?

Will they be publishing the names of their employees who now own guns as a result of all of the death threats I’m sure they have received?

All these leftwingtards want it to be children who huddle in the corner and wait for the mad dog killer to come around and kill them one at a time.

I do believe the thought of such massacres is a sexual stimulus to them ~ there's a term for the condition ~ believe it's 'vicarious sadosexual serial killer' ~ probably ought to lock these old birds up until they can be treated.

This is probably the condition that afflicts Joe Biden and Herb Kohl ~ they're the guys who started the whole Free Fire School Zones.

Sorry, but I don't think these Leftists give a crap about these murdered kids. It's all about gun control! Think about it; these A-holes have NO compulsion about slaughtering a baby in the womb in the third trimester, or killing it after surviving an abortion, but we're supposed to believe they give a sh*t about the kids at this school?

Liberals are pure evil!

I'll bet a few of them have personal security guards now, in addition to the office guards.

Worley has a piece. Just have him show up for 'work'.

Journal News reporter Dwight R. Worley owns a Smith & Wesson 686 .357 Magnum and has had a residence permit in New York City for that weapon since February 2011.

Writer Dwight R. Worley not shown as gun permit holder on Journal News internet map

Looks like they took a page out of the military manuals because that is exactly what we are supposed to do. We can throw objects like staplers and telephones. Not much of a defense for someone with an AR who can cap you from outside throwing distance. They mus think we are all baseball pitchers or something.

The truly naïve notion is that the perfectly defenseless elementary school situation of a Sandy Hook, with its scary locked door and lines of beautiful floor-ceiling windows, can’t coexist in a country with completely porous borders, sleeper AQ cells, Gulan-style training camps in NY and PA, IRGC troops, Iraqi/Iranian/Palestinian/Egyptian ‘refugees, CAIR fanatics, and drug trunk lines from Central America through to Canada. Even someplace like Dayton, Ohio, apparently has over 200 gangs. Villainy lives within driving distance of most places now, unfortunately.

“I don’t think these Leftists give a crap about these murdered kids.”

The playbook was ready to bake in under 2 minutes. All of it.

A Sandy Hook could just as easily been manufactured or bought and paid for by any number of in or out-of-country groups. We don’t know exactly what happened. Maybe some lucky LEOs have a Zapruder recording somewhere. I mean, the intercom was left on.....was the 911 call a continuous, long call record?

I think can’t should be can in the referenced thought.

You cannot have the perfect innocence of an elementary school left undefended ad infinitum and expect no consequences.

I don’t know why parents are comfortable with their children being undefended while the parents need keycard/CAC access.

It's arrogance in the fact that Liberal reporters/journalist believe they are a special class citizen with special "privileges & rights" above and beyond that of you & I.

How dare anyone challange their ethics, acts in personal life, or privacy.

putting quite a stretch on the term 'give a crap' ~ they're serial killers ~ they murder babies in the womb, they murder them in gradeschool.

They don't care about women ~ they like dead babies, lots of them too. It's the 'dead' part they love ~ they worship it ~ they seek immortality through the death of the innocent. A traditionalist would suggest they have one foot in hell and one foot on earth and they're killing for pleasure.

Authorities in a suburban county north of New York City said on Tuesday they will refuse to release names of local gun permit holders to a newspaper that has been publishing the identities of thousands of license-holding residents.

Putnam County Clerk Dennis Sant said he would defy a request for information about pistol permit holders from the White Plains, New York-based Journal News, which has come under criticism for publishing thousands of such identities already.

“There is the rule of law, and there is right and wrong and the Journal News is clearly wrong,” Sant said in a statement. “I could not live with myself if one Putnam pistol permit holder was put in harm’s way, for the sole purpose of selling newspapers.”

The Journal News first published a map listing thousands of pistol permit-holders in Westchester and Rockland counties, just north of New York City, on December 24.

The newspaper’s editors said they sought the information after the December 14 shooting deaths of 26 children and adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, which has sparked nationwide debate about gun control.

Angered, state gun-owner groups have called for an advertising boycott of the newspaper until it takes the map and identities off its website.

The newspaper, owned by the Gannett Co., sought the information under the state’s Freedom of Information law. It says the identities are a matter of public record.

Putnam County officials had said they were compiling the names for the newspaper but on Tuesday said instead they would not deliver the information.

The county clerk said he has received hundreds of phone calls urging him not to give the information to the paper.

The county clerk, Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell and other elected officials were slated to appear on Thursday at a news conference declaring their intentions. Also set to appear is state Sen. Greg Ball, a Patterson, New York, Republican who has said he will introduce legislation to keep permit information private except to prosecutors and police.

A similar bill that he introduced earlier as an assemblyman failed in the state Assembly.

The newspaper’s editors were not available on Tuesday to comment on Putnam’s announcement.

In the original article, the newspaper cited Robert Freeman, executive director of the state’s Committee on Open Government, as saying he believed not only should the names and addresses be public, but also other information such as the types or numbers of guns someone owns.

Freeman told the newspaper that government records are presumed public unless their release is specifically barred by statute.

The newspaper’s editor and publisher have said they expected the publication of the information to be controversial.

“But we felt sharing information about gun permits in our area was important in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings,” said Janet Hasson, president and publisher of The Journal News Media Group.
