CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: It's possible that this is a prelude to a challenge, Thursday, to Boehner's leadership by Eric Cantor. I think it would be quite naked to do it at this late hour as a result of a split over the vote.
Look, there are a lot of conservatives in the Republican caucus in the House who hate the bill, and for good reason. This is a complete surrender on everything. The ratio of tax hikes to spending cuts is 40:1 rather than 1:1, or 1:2 or 1:3. So, it was a complete rout by the Democrats. So it's understandable.
I think what's likely to happen is that the leadership is going to look to get the 218 that it could secure to send the bill back to the Senate with an equal number of spending cuts. If they don’t get it, I think what Boehner will do is have an open vote -- as you say, unwhipped. Republicans will vote as they wish. They'll probably be enough with all the Democrats to pass this.

I’m a third party man now. But, really, I don’t think the electoral process matters anymore. Nothing will change until after the war.
The trouble with kicking the can down the road, as a strategy to cope with the looming problems, is that eventually you run out of road.
The web of “social safety net” programs, which has so successfully ensnared such a large part of the voting public, is eventually going to have to cut back, paying something like the equivalent of pennies on the dollar, if it is not simply abandoned altogether. We have seen these schemes collapse elsewhere, and the human wreckage is pitiful to look upon. When corrective measures finally are taken, they shall be much more draconian than most people now imagine. Real privation, real starvation, is a haunting probability, if not a certainty.
It does not have to be. Probably 75% of the problem that we face is the rigidly doctrinaire application of a program to “change” the nature of this country “fundamentally”, by implementation of poorly-thought-out social engineering schemes.
The marketplace is thought, by some, to be much too chaotic, and must be regulated with a firm hand, punitive if necessary, just to keep down “excesses”, though it is never explained just why these “excesses” are not part of the greater good. The “excesses” are what fund all real human progress, building the factories and laboratories and research institutes, and powering the everyday commerce between people.

This confirms what many of us have observed. These DC Hacks on both
sides are unwilling or unable to make the painful choices to save this country. I.e spending cuts.
Tax increases may delay it, but the only outcome left is a collapse.
One would have to be in denial not to see what is coming at the end of
the road. If these hacks are incapable or unwilling to address the real
issue, what outcome is left?

They have been kicking the can down the road the past several years. The GOP should have NEVER agreed to raise the debt limit last year unless entitlement reform and tax reform were worked out as a comprehensive package.
Now it’s better just to do nothing until the new Congress is inaugurated and start over. And Boehner and McConnell should lose their respective leadership positions.

If there were Patriots in the GOP House they would never have allowed Harry Reid to get away without passing a budget. They would have used the appropriations power of the House, even if it meant shutting down the government. Simply said they would have passed a responsible budget with dramatic cuts to the bureaucracy and programs. Ideally they would have passed a balanced budget and sent it to the Senate. If Reid refused to bring the budget to a vote, the government would shut down for lack of money since the Constitution requires all appropriations to originate in the House. If Reid brought the budget up and it failed, the House could refuse to send another appropriations bill. The Senate would then be a position of either passing the bill or letting the government shut down. Ultimately the Senate would pass it. It might take a few weeks and one or two rounds of social security checks not going out, but if the House held firm, the Senate would have to pass the bill. Same thing with the President. Once the Senate passed the bill, if the President vetoed it and the House held firm, public pressure would ultimately force him to sign the bill so the government would have funding.
Exercising the power would require the Republicans to stand firm in the face of a huge media and public firestorm. The Democrats would scream they were killing seniors, children, and destroying the planet. However, the Constitution gives the House the upper hand on the budget and if it holds firm, both the Senate and the President have to come to terms with the House.
Republicans are going to get blamed by the press and the Democrats. They might as well do something worth getting blamed for. It requires courage to stand tall against the special interests and non producers. I don’t think it requires any more courage than it did for George Washington and his ragged army to cross the Delaware river the night of December 25/26, 1776 or the US Marines to hold out on Guadalcanal in 1942 or the allied forces to storm the beaches on Normandy in June 1944. The Republic is in peril and it is time for the House Republicans to man up and fight the tyrant even if it costs them the next election. Unfortunately John Boehner and Eric Cantor have shown no sign they have the courage to use their constitutional powers to do the right thing for our nation. By refusing to use their constitutional powers they are abdicating the fiscal policy of this country to Harry Reid, Barack Obama, and the Democrat Party.

This whole thing is just abhorrent. Rushing through another POS bill on New Year’s Day. Its insane. The GOP is committing suicide. I see the Dems taking the House back in 2014 and then Barry can run rampant for two years.

All the GWB tax rates all went up at midnight last night so now they can vote for this bill which is much worse than plan B, the bill that they opposed a couple weeks ago, and now say for sure that they ‘cut taxes’.
Long Time past to move on from this silly make believe game that taxes wouldn’t go up automatically. Dragging it out till now proved nothing and was stupid.
Pelosi is praising this bill on the House floor now. Its another sad day in this R controlled House session history, one of the last few days.
Apparently, the next big battle is more important, the fight over the debt ceiling. I am torn between the realities of the 2012 election and my desire to fight. I think we should regroup and fight the debt ceiling raising.
This bill sets up another $4 trillion in spending, i.e., more debt. I expect another downgrading of U S Treasuries, soaring inflation, devaluation of the dollar, a lowering of wages, soaring unemployment, a lower standard of living and a final catastrophic descent into economic hell, civil unrest and God knows what else.
There will not be a fight over the debt ceiling. obama will get everything he wants from Boehner.oaama loves humiliating Republicans as much as the Republicans enjoy being humiliated.
If they (Rs) weren't so delusional about the taxes going up they could have made a stand on cutting spending instead, but they (many) decided to put all their chips on this certainly losing hand.
YES, They should move on from this fiasco yesterday and yes prepare to fight on the debt limit spending cuts, this time they should prepare to work public opinion.
At the moment we are borrowing 46 cents out of every dollar we spend.
How long can that continue? Not much longer.
Watching what is going on now is embarrassing. I don't even want to be associated with this party any more.
