Africa: Where black is not really beautiful

Nomasonto Mnisi says her skin colour is "a self-esteem issue"

South Africa is marketed to the world as Mandela's rainbow nation, where everyone is proud of their race and heritage. But for some black South Africans there is such a thing as being too black.

A recent study by the University of Cape Town suggests that one woman in three in South Africa bleaches her skin. The reasons for this are as varied as the cultures in this country but most people say they use skin-lighteners because they want "white skin".

Local musician Nomasonto "Mshoza" Mnisi, now several shades lighter, says her new skin makes her feel more beautiful and confident.

She has been widely criticised in the local media and social networking sites for her appearance but the 30-year-old says skin-bleaching is a personal choice, no different from breast implants or a having nose job.

So then is it true that ‘’Black is beautiful, Tan is grand but White is the color in the Boss man’s land’’?

Didn’t Michael Jackson make a similar reconstruction of himself?

95% of the skin creams, lotions, facial scrubs, gels, in SE Asia have the adjective “whitening” prominently on the label.

Looks like she’s had some eye, lips & nose “work” done, too. Didn’t MJ’s Dr get jailed, or is he over in Africa now?

That's right. Especially true in India. All over Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia there is nothing but specialty formulas for whitening.

It seems as though a lot of the talking heads in sports bleach their skin as well. Just an observation from channel-flipping among the ESPN stations and NFL network. There’s really no need for it but TV personalities seem to be really insecure.

I don’t know how, but somehow this is all the fault of the Tea Party in America.

Money quote right here:

“I like white people. Black people are seen as dangerous; that’s why I don’t like being black. People treat me better now because I look like I’m white,” he adds.

There’s a hierarchy of shades in the black community here, too.

Many Asian and Latin American women carry umbrellas, to keep their skin from tanning.

As if any of us can choose our skin color. Asians, Japanese in particular are known to have surgery to round their eyes. Malcolm X wrote in his autobio about blacks in America going through a painful chemical process called ‘’conking’’, using lye, to straighten out their hair.

Black women bleach their skin, and white women go to tanning salons.

Vanity seems to cross all racial lines

Yep - add Thailand to the list, and probably Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia as well as exactly the same products are often distributed in those countries (have multi-language labels).

I can’t speak to other peoples motivations, but Melasma and sun damage also explains the usage of lightening creams. Melasma usually occurs during pregnancy. It causes dark patches of skin to appear while other areas of the face remain lighter.
