The new year began not with a cannonball off the fiscal cliff but with an outbreak of conspiratorial cynicism.
This time its Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, whose fall and concussion, followed by a blood clot between her brain and skull, has prompted an embarrassment of theories. The gist: That woman will do anything to avoid testifying about Benghazi.
Several commentators on the right opined via Twitter and TV, those most deadly hosts for the parasites of rumor and innuendo, that Clinton was faking her concussion to duck out on her appearance before congressional committees investigating the attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.
An independent report published last month placed substantial responsibility for the deaths on the State Department. Not only was security at the Benghazi compound weak, relying heavily on local forces with conflicting loyalties, but requests for additional security apparently were ignored or denied.
The sentiment that Clinton might not wish to testify on the matter is not without reason. It is hard to imagine the agony of knowing that ones lack of vigilance may have contributed to four deaths. But the attacks on Clinton during her illness, essentially attacks on her character, have been cruel and unfair. What must the world think of us?
Clinton, who fainted as a result of dehydration after a bout of flu, hit her head and suffered a concussion, after which a blood clot was discovered. She had to be hospitalized while blood-thinning medications were administered and monitored.
Although her critics backed off once the clot was reported, initial responses ranged from Shes faking to demands for proof of her concussion.
One writer demanded her medical records. John Bolton, former ambassador to the United Nations, called Clintons affliction a diplomatic illness

So I guess Ms Parker doesn’t buy the secret mission to Iran and the plane incident....
Kathleen Parker, concern troll. Lord knows how the world cursed us for the job done on Michele Bachman or Sarah Palin, right? Right, Kathleen?
The Clintons record of destroying enemies is only exceeded by destroying friends.
I think Ms. Parker is saying that those who said that Hillary was FAKING her illness in order to avoid testifying before Congress about Benghazi are wrong (at best) or have sinister intentions (at worst).
Kathleen Parker: predictable.
The Post certainly knows a lot about the subject as they practice real character assassination on just about every conservative they ever write about. I find it ironic that the Washington Post is whining about the “character assassination” of one of the people they like. Never mind the fact that she likely is faking to avoid the whole testifying about Benghazi thing.
And the 2016 race begins :)
She has no character to trash.
sniper sniper sniper.......three times she told the lie to get sympathy. She told a lie about her own name. She was an accomplice in Vince Foster’s murder. She was responsible for 800 FBI files suddenly found in the WH.
Well, let’s just say, she lies.
If she is really ill, why so many secrets? What exactly are they hiding?
I'm in the LYING ABOUT IT contingent.
HIllarys chronic alcoholism and drug abuse are very real
OK, events have conspired to keep her from testifying........ pretty damned efficeiently so far.
She has left her trail of lying and avoiding telling the truth from White Water to her plane being shot at when she was flying over some country close to Russia. Words that come out of her mouth cannot be trusted and she has had too many friends covering up for her before.
I didn’t see any protests from the WaPo back in 2008 when Democrat delegates were being stripped away from Hillary and given to Obama.
Time to interrogate Parker as well. She has no reason to cover up for Clinton unless she was involved.
How exactly could anyone assasinate the character of someone as scummy as PIAPS?
It is also similar enough to her reluctance to testify about the 900 FBI records, the firing of the travel office personnel, and the cattle futures in her husband’s administration for her critics to see a pattern of behavior. It may not be a exact repeat, but it does rhyme.
