The Congress that convened two years ago under the war cries of the tea party is slowly coming to an end with a Champagne-less whimper on New Years Day 2013.
The House voted late Tuesday evening, in a rare holiday session, to pass a fiscal cliff bill brokered without the involvement of the GOP majority and with far less than half of their votes.
The bill (HR 8) was amended by the Senate in the early morning hours on an 89-8 vote, carrying language crafted over the holiday weekend by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.
The 257-167 roll call in the humbled House concluded close to 11 p.m., with 172 Democratic votes and only 85 Republicans, fewer of their own conference than GOP leaders hoped for perhaps, but more than enough to clear the necessary majority to send the legislation to President Barack Obamas desk.
Am I having a nightmare, or what? Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio could be heard saying on the House floor, perhaps in jest. Boehner voted for the measure. Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California and Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam of Illinois all voted against it. Budget Chairman Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., who has largely remained quiet during the debate over the last few weeks, voted for the legislation.
AND the news media = the democrat party
We’ve had a dictatorship in the U.S.A. with the news media as the dictators
And they all read it in detail and understood it before they voted?
To hell with the GOP. Bu-Bye.
My America is gone. I go down with every damn benefit accorded!
I have all that military crap behind me. FU Obama, I’m In, Can’t do shit. FU
Michelle Bachmann is a patriot. She also has actually run a private business, as few politicians have.
WHO are the 85 Republicans we need to PRIMARY OUT of office?
I hope the majority of those 151 Republicans who voted no tonight also vote no against Boehner as Speaker this coming Thursday.
Exactly. Only a fool believes the GOP won’t cave again.
As well as a ton of new spending, and no cuts to departments that actually existed. The GOP gained nothing in this negotiation. In fact, they lost ground.
Congrats, you are one of the few who understands the subtlety of what McConnell has achieved.
When Bush signed the tax cuts, they were temporary. Which means the democraps can let them expire and not be accused of raising taxes. Now they are PERMANENT, which means if they try to increase them, IT WILL BE A TAX INCREASE transparent and obvious.
We're all thrilled that it worked out so well for you.
Who needs all that "capitalism", "limited government", and "principles" crap anyway.
Just go back to the debt ceiling vote and see who voted for that. Then check the no vote for this vote and you will know the undercover RINOs.
My Rep (Ted Poe) did the right thing. Knew he would. Had a long, sit down, face to face chat with him in his Kingwood office about 7 years ago. He’s a true Tea Party kind of guy.
You are correct. There were some silver linings to this grey cloud. I would add that the tax increases on the rich will probably not raise any money due their supply side effect. Should we elect a President in 2016 and get back to adding Senate seats in ‘14 and take over that chamber in ‘16 if not in ‘14, we need to reform the tax code. We can fix the rates at that time. We need a real conservative though. Romney didn’t win anybody to our side by compromising. So, we might as well go for what we actually want, rather than start the retreat before the votes are even cast.
One thing at a time. Now that the middle tax rates are PERMANENT, the democraps just can’t let them expire as was possible with Bush’s law. If they try to increase the rates, it will be a transparent tax increase.
I am disappointed over the lack of spending cuts just as you are. But the repubs will have more leverage to do that in 2 months during the debt ceiling imbroglio coming up. I will be mad as hell if the repubs cave in then. For the time being, I am happy with the FC bill as passed.
You just ain't real bright, are you?
THANK YOU!!! I hope all you Schwartzenegger voting CA Repellicans note that Tom McClintock stuck to his guns!!! If you’d have got out and voted for him for Governor, just think how much better off we might well be today in CA... and maybe even the nation!!!
I think you had a bit too much from the New Years’ party...McConnell’s negotiating skills??
If he as anything but the turkey necked do-nothing piece of shit that he is, all those (indexed? They should be NIXED) and more would have been in something a bit easier to swallow than OCare.
Again, NO debate, NO transparency, NO reform, NO cuts, NO ANYTHING to get behind. Lay off the GOPe kook-aide
Yes. And what makes you think I'm in favor of it? Raising taxes results in reduced revenues and even larger deficits. Do YOU recognize THAT?
Why, did the DEM party drop trow and surrender w/out a whimper??
Who came out w/ Plan B when the the first sentence was on paper w/ Plan A? Who let the back-room deals continue? Who kept the rest of the party in the dark about said dealings? WHy tried to arm-twist to get Plan B passed when it wouldn’t pass the smell test?
Nope, the GOPe did that all by itself. Time to hang up the GOP cheer leading outfit, it won’t work this time.
