Great news for the middle class. The Bush tax cuts were all expiring, but are now made permanent. I am admiring McConnell’s negotiating skills to get this done. AMT gets indexed, Death tax gets indexed, capital gains & Dividends at 15% rate permanently. All good for middle class.
Yeah, and it screws the “rich”. Woo Hoo! /s
Permanent? Are you in high school? The GOP just made themselves the minority in 2014 and the Dems will raise away.
And not ONE spending cut. A true cut.
Stupid “deal” (like they didn’t know it was coming after setting it up last year?) made by stupid people.
Wake up and smell the coffee. Nothing congress did today was good for America.
The GOP must go the way of the Whigs.
You make good points — when I remind myself that Democrats don’t care who suffers as long as they’re in control.
As well as a ton of new spending, and no cuts to departments that actually existed. The GOP gained nothing in this negotiation. In fact, they lost ground.
You are correct. There were some silver linings to this grey cloud. I would add that the tax increases on the rich will probably not raise any money due their supply side effect. Should we elect a President in 2016 and get back to adding Senate seats in ‘14 and take over that chamber in ‘16 if not in ‘14, we need to reform the tax code. We can fix the rates at that time. We need a real conservative though. Romney didn’t win anybody to our side by compromising. So, we might as well go for what we actually want, rather than start the retreat before the votes are even cast.
I think you had a bit too much from the New Years’ party...McConnell’s negotiating skills??
If he as anything but the turkey necked do-nothing piece of shit that he is, all those (indexed? They should be NIXED) and more would have been in something a bit easier to swallow than OCare.
Again, NO debate, NO transparency, NO reform, NO cuts, NO ANYTHING to get behind. Lay off the GOPe kook-aide
Yup. I take that as a win!
The tax issue is resolved. Now we have to fight to reduce spending and work for entitlement reform.
This is one chapter in a long battle and I’m not getting worked up over it.
People don’t understand that the whole “cliff” thing was a debacle from the moment it was set up. The Dems calculated it would give them super leverage in the crunch. They are playing chess while the GOP is playing checkers.
I think the GOP came out with as much as they could get and maybe more — plus they held off a one-year extension of the sequestration. Even the sequestration was a Dem set up, loaded to hit defense spending and thus give Dems leverage.
So, the original stupid mistake was to agree to the whole cliff arrangement with sequestration — the GOP walked right into that with their eyes wide shut.
The GOP preserved future leverage, however, with the final deal and they have additional leverage with the debt limit. Obama says he’s not going to ‘play’ over the debt limit and will play brinksmanship again. The GOP has to figure out how to trap him in his own game. It can be done.
