An 18-year-old California man was shot dead by police last week while he was handcuffed and on the ground. Police say he was carrying a loaded handgun.
According to a statement issued by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, officers responded to a "gang-related 'man with a gun'" call in Moreno Valley at 8:38 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 28.
The sheriff's statement continues: "As this was occurring, an additional officer arrived on scene and observed the subject roll onto his side. The initial officer backed away from the subject and announced that the subject had a gun, at which time an officer involved shooting occurred."
The deceased has been identified as Lamon Khiry Haslip, 18, of Ontario, Calif.
How the h3ll can a handcuffed man, hands behind his back, even use a firearm with any accuracy?
To say that something stinks here is an understatement.
A cop that wanted to shoot someone for the thrill sounds more like what happened. If so, put him/her on death row and fasttrack the appeals process.
^^ an officer involved shooting occurred ^^
Cop speak for they capped him.
Wondering if the guy had been cuffed already if he hadn’t been patted down, and any weapon taken from him. Quite curious.
I have to go shopping in Moreno Valley today. Leaving now. SHEESH!
Murder 1. QED.
Another way to persuade citizens to give up their guns.
Where was the gun? in the kids’ waistband? Did they not frisk himn for weapons before handcuffing him?
Something is not right about this story — as reported, it gives the appearance of a cop killing a citizen without cause.
That is the only conclusion that can be reached unless there is additional information that has not been released.
As the perp swung the gun he accidentally caught a bunch of the arresting officer’s leg hairs in the action.
Good thing he wasnt walking his dog.
Im witholding judgement till I find out if the guy was an American or a registered Democrat.....
We are in a USA now...........
The story doesn’t say, did the cuffed suspect have a gun or not?
There must be a slew of details missing or ommitted. I tend to give the good guys the benefit of the doubt until more information is available.
But I remain suspicious of the officers even though they killed a gang-banger.
Don’t forget this story was printed by CBS.
And we know where their loyalty lies, so to speak.
Illinois state senate to propose that next.
All YOU need to know is See B S
I hope they do because that will be met with a very angry reaction; at least I hope the cops would react that way.
It would be interesting to watch.
The reporter does not care. His purpose is not to inform. It is to get attention to this story and any follow-up stories. Stories that provoke emotions are seen as FAR superior to accurate stories that merely convey facts. (Read ANY journalism textbook. They are explicit about this.)
You misguidedly believe otherwise about the source of the writing. In their eyes, it's clearly your problem, not theirs.
Moreno Valley, CA = Meth Capital of So Cal
If so, put him/her on death row and fasttrack the appeals process.
Like that will ever happen. Let me look into my crystal ball. It will be ruled a "good shoot." Remember police don't have to follow laws like we do. They just have to follow vague and mysterious "departmental guidlines." Which are apparently flexible enough to cover almost everything.
They should have searched the dude post cuffing immediately.
I am calling BS on this. Reporters have proven time and again that they do not have a clue when it comes to a shooting. They only want the sensationalism and scoop, regardless of accuracy.
I’ll hold judgement until the police department cover it up.
I don’t see enough info in the story to make an instant “I hate cops” judgement. Sounds bad from the story, but I’ll wait on this one.
Generally will put you against a wall, frisk you then handcuff you. I can’t imagine just handcuffing, putting on the floor and not checking him for weapons.
You just had to burst my bubble, didn’t you? I would like to think that what is right still matters; you just threw ice cold water on me. LOL
I would have bet money that they did. Now where the gun came from is something that I would not bet money on giving it about 1:5 that it was he handcuffed guy's and about 4:5 it was planted by the cops.
Whether the shoot is righteous or not, this cop should not be allowed to wear a badge after this incident.
D’OH — I forgot about the “thin blue line,” how could I have been so foolish. Silly me.
Not enough facts available at this time to say that with any kind of certainty. Most likely, some moron with a badge had his finger on the trigger and pulled it without even thinking when another cop noticed the suspect's weapon and shouted "he has a gun!" The fact that the citizen most likely wasn't touching his gun wouldn't come into it. Given the general poor gun-handling skills of the majority of cops, it was fortunate for the other officers that they didn't get hit too.
This could explain it...maybe
Living in NYC i don’t even think of them as the good guys.
Lamon, c’mon Man!
Lamon, c’mon Man!
Thing is, gang-bangers and meth-heads aren't famous for following the law either.
Story doesn’t add up.
He either was cuffed and then shot
Shot and then cuffed.
Neither one makes any sense. The “victim” was probably a bad dude, but sounds to me like the cop was out of line either way.
It was poor gun handling skills that brought America the DA auto. Now cops are even f-—ing that up.
Then noticed the gun and overreacted.
LOL...I posted the same link before I saw your post!
Dude i can’t tell you the arguments i’ve had in Freep with people who automatically assume the cops are always right. I don’t see them any different from any other citizen. Is their job more dangerous than mine? No doubt. Do they get well compensated for it? Hell yes.
Fact is a goodly portion join these days for the pay, the pension, the bennies. It’s no longer about ‘doing right’.
leme see..he was in a car that was passingby, then jumped out of the car to flee???? why not just stay in the car and continue to pass by?
doesn’t pass the smell test.
Wasn’t he disarmed when they cuffed him?
“An 18-year-old California man was shot dead by police last week while he was handcuffed and on the ground.”
I would suggest he was much less of a flight risk at that time.
I wonder where the slug ended up.
One way to keep everyone loose in a tense situation. Several sets of wet/crapped pants there.
Yes. That is correct. The only thing he can do now is vote.
Well, there's the old adage about worrying about the bullet with "To whom it may concern" on it.
I would suggest that you watch the "parking lot scene" in the move "Hollywood Homicide".
It's supposedly based on a true incident, according to what I read on IMDB.
Were skittles involved?
Well at least he didnt shoot 9 innocent bystanders like the NYPD does.
No information, no opinion....
“...you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy...we must be wary”
FWIW. This site points out Haslip was a gang-banger.
I’d wait for the facts to come out too; kinda of like I did with Zimmerman’s story.....
