The French actor, described by Mr Putin as a successful businessman and friend, has developed close ties with Russia, which has a flat 13% personal income tax rate.

He currently appears in an advertisement for Sovietsky Bank's credit card and is prominently featured on the bank's home page.

In 2011, he played the lead role in the film Rasputin, a Franco-Russian production about the life of eccentric monk Grigory Rasputin.

In addition, Mr Depardieu has also helped raise funds for a children's hospital in St Petersburg.

Good move! France is losing successful, qualified and talented people due to its socialist confiscatory 75% progressive income tax.

I've always liked the best thing about Vladimir Putin's tax reform a decade ago: a 13% flat tax. Russia's gain of ex French actor Gerard Depardieu is France's loss!

People like lower taxes. A concept France's Socialist President Francois Hollande doesn't appear to understand.

There are some good things like that in Mother Russia, but Putin is a petty tyrant and a guy I met several months ago who actually lives there called it a “dark place.”

I tend to agree with him.

China and Russia are the capitalist nations now, US and Europe are the socialist nations. And to think great men died so that wouldn’t happen.

If he’d grandfather in my gun permit, I’d consider it. I’m Orthodox Christian already.

I believe under Russian law, you have to receive a smooth bore permit and demonstrate law abiding behavior for 5 years befor you can get a rifled bore permit. I may be wrong, I’m not 100% certain.

He’s been a good steward of the Russian economy.

Russians live freer and better than they did under Communism.

Populism isn’t the way to go - for any country.

The modern income tax is a marxist construct. The income tax empowers government to coerce the citizenry into behaving as the government dictates. Thus the income tax must be eliminated. Further a number of amendments need to be made to the constitution to place limits upon our thieving political class and citizenry. Among these is repeal of the sixteenth amendment, the income tax amendment, implementation of a national retail sales tax to fund the government. And revise Article 1 to remove the power of congress to lay any taxes except a national sales tax.

Not to get off topic, but “eccentric monk Grigory Rasputin?” More like demonic. How many attempts did it take to kill Rasputin?

There's one other reason I can think of why somebody might want to move to Russia. I've been waiting a long time to hear some politician, any politician, with the power to do anything about it, say the first word about trying to protect Christians out there in the world where they are persecuted. So far, I've heard one politician in that sort of position say anything like that and that one guy's name is Владимир Путин.

Populism isn’t the way to go - for any country.

Something I frequently tell an Indian acquaintance of mine who has repeatedly tried to do business in Argentina.

You are right. But as soon as you have your permit noone really care if you have an “assault gun” or not. Folding stocks, pistol grips, high-capacity mags etc. are allowed. Mother Russia doesn’t care.

The whole world is becoming a dark place, and there is no where to flee to anymore. All the continents are governed by government locusts.

I have a friend who lives in Russia, and while she agrees America is falling fast, she still says -- at present -- America is much more free than Russia.

She does advise that in a few years, at the rate we are going, America will descend below Russia's level of freedom.

In terms of personal freedoms they were already ahead in late Soviet period. As for political freedoms they are far from perfect and so will be in any near future.
