Its an embarrassing time to be a Republican Congressmanalbeit an outgoing Congressman.
As negotiators, we utterly failed to meet our two objectives: to reduce spending and prevent tax increases. President Obama demanded tax increases with small spending cuts, and thats exactly what passed. Thanks to the leadership of Speaker John Boehner, the House passed a bill which raises taxes by $620 billion while cutting spending by a mere $15 billion over 10 years. Usually, a compromise is an even trade (one-for-one). In this trade, House and Senate Republicans traded $41 dollars in tax hikes for every $1 dollar in spending cutsnot exactly a balanced approach. Conservatives can thank the Republican establishment for this profound failure. While establishment Republicans and the media blamed Tea Party conservatives for holding up a deal, we found out last night that Speaker Boehner was willing all along to balk 150 members of his caucus and join with the Democrats to raise taxes.
Speaker Boehner and his merry band of establishment Republicans wanted to blame the tea party freshman for putting him between a rock and a hard place during these negotiations, but that wasn't the case. The truth is, protecting the establishment from their own votes is what has put him in such an untenable spot.
By running out the clock, the Speaker gave his establishment members cover to vote for a deal with President Obama. Boehner is more interested in cutting deals that don't rock the boat with President Obama than defending conservative, debt-reduction principles. This type of compromise is what gave us this fiscal cliff in the first place. In the last two years, the Speaker has given the Democrats exactly what they wanted...

If Boehner remains Speaker Im done with the GOP.
NOTHING will get done as long as hes in charge.
And after him it will be Pelosis turn.
Im just waiting to hear one way or the other.
Yep. Last chance before the GOP falls off the cliff.
It matters to us.
But it doesn’t matter who’s in power for the K-Street Money Changers.
They work both sides. I like to call them the DC Party.
No Chance.
Why vote for a liar when you can vote for the guy who`ll tell you up front, “ Yes, I`m going to raise taxes and increase the size of Govt. “ ?
How much of a masochist can one be ?
I will be following you out the door if Boner keeps his position. I will still leave the party if Boner is replaced by another lame weasel. The party can either grow a backbone or it can fade into oblivion.
It is the degenerate, sub-human, monkey-vomit filth that is the American voter which will lead to the defeat of anything good or virtuous.
Sorry, the Democrats can tell the difference from just your breath.
The House is all that partly remains between this Republic remaining some what free and coming under a total government controlled communist government. The House goes and that would be the final end. The GOP might as well dissolve.
Why?siding with
democrats rather than fellow
republicans gives no meaning to leading a party.
He is leading the
dems instead
Where’s our leadership? Conservatives will get nowhere until somebody stands up and exerts the power of one man to say, “Follow me!”
The Gutless Old Pretenders are done as a national political party.
Here's an interesting quote from the Wikipedia page on the Whig Party:
"When new issues of nativism, prohibition and anti-slavery burst on the scene in the mid-1850s, no one looked to the quickly disintegrating Whig party for answers."
Here we are once again, many new problems bursting on the scene and nobody is looking to the quickly disintegrating Republican Party for answers.
Who would want the darned job? It is a thankless job. I read these hateful posts on FR and I see unrealistic expectations. I’m not necessarily defending Boehner and frankly, I don’t care one way or the other if he’s reelected but I also see how he is in a no-win situation.
We can hate fellow Republicans more than we hate Democrats. By golly, we have our principles, after all.
We are Democrats' best friends, we keep them in office.
It’s over, Boehner just got to 217.
So much for that whole Speaker fantasy pick exercise yesterday. I think I’ll send Boehner a gross of crying towels for his new term. Obama will provide the Jameson’s.
Michelle Bachman queen of the Tea party just helped save Bonehead

I’m watching the vote right now and it doesn’t appear to be over yet. Did I miss something?

Isn't this the kind of thing that happened to G.H.W. Bush?
Add the "read my lips" quote was the death nail to his presidency.
