Several Republican Congressmen Vote For Allen West Over Boehner For House Speaker

Andrew Kirell

It’s no secret that Speaker of the House John Boehner is currently unpopular with the more conservative elements of his Republican Party. As the new House voted for Speaker, several Republican congressmen made their negative feelings official, casting ballots for anyone but Boehner.

While other disgruntled GOPers either held their noses and voted for Boehner, or abstained entirely, several other Republicans cast protest votes in favor of Reps. Justin Amash (R-MI), Eric Cantor (R-MD), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Raul Labrador (R-ID), former U.S Comptroller General David Walker, and the recently ousted and controversial Rep. Allen West (R-FL).

Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) cast the protest vote for comptroller Walker, prompting a collective “Huh?” among social media users.

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) and Rep. Gohmert cast the two votes for West, who lost his re-election bid to Democrat Patrick Murphy.

Mr. Speaker?

The order of finish:

First: Boehner
Second: Pelosi
Third: Cantor
Fourth: West

I can’t believe Pelosi came so close. Although I would have loved West, we would have lost. We need to pick our battles here, folks. Big picture.

And she came in ahead of Cantor..What does that tell you?

FIGHT LIKE HELL but pick the battles, we need to have at least ONE branch in our court while we work on the other two..

The way to get Boehner's attention ~ and let him know you are really not satisfied with his performance ~ is to submit a bill for the construction of a GRAND CANAL in the middle of DC.

(See: venice, grand canal, doge)

Boehner should have resigned. Boehner picked his battle when he fired all the Tea Party conservatives from committee positions.

What’s the advantage? The Republicans will take the blame for the same policies Pelosi will enact. At least if Pelosi was the speaker, the Republicans would have a chance in 2014. Now the Dems will win in 2014.

Could care less.

Bonehead has released me from my misery.

No longer a Republican.

They are a lost party anyway.

We’ll have to regroup after CW-II.

Republicans are really, really good at two things:

1. Losing.

2. Meaningless symbolism.

And which branch is in "our" court? The Boehner-Obama-Reid fiscal cliff deal passed WITHOUT a majority of Boehner's own Party, 151-85.

The point is you don't rally have one branch of the government, if the GOPe call the tune. Wise up.

Peelousi came in 2nd cause there are still quite a few dems in the House.

Speakers have always been one of the more political positions. Its amazing the Boenher can be a ruthless toughy within the House and a crybaby to nobama.

I think Alan West would've been a very good choice. I also liked the idea of a Speaker Issa.

I didn't want Boehner again because:
He hangs out with Obama too much while they speak secretly to reach deals.
It seems dishonest, like Obama promising to put things out for three days prior to passing them.
I just don't trust John Boehner.

Also, after watching Boehner doing press conferences for weeks, I'm finally going to say something.
He's looked/sounded intoxicated in many of them.
I wasn't the only one to notice it, and I hope I'm wrong about it.
Could be he has some sort of health issue, I don't know.

I don't like Eric Cantor.

IMO-He comes off as superior and smug. Just above everyone in general.

Having said these things Mr.Boehner now has an opportunity to prove me wrong.

I won't be changing parties. It might make guys like them too happy.

I agree with you on West, he was my only choice.

I don’t care much for the rest of them.

You don’t have to be a member of the House to be selected Speaker.
