AP) IOWA CITY, Iowa - An Iowa Board of Regents member worked behind the scenes to create a university institute honoring her husband, Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin, and then pushed for its approval before two of the couple’s allies left the board, according to an email obtained by The Associated Press.
The 2011 email from then-Iowa State University Provost Elizabeth Hoffman describes the top-secret process that Ruth Harkin and a small group of officials pursued in planning the Harkin Institute of Public Policy, which remains mired in controversy nearly two years later. It noted that an ethics scandal involving a similar institute honoring New York Rep. Charlie Rangel made the Harkins aware "that they needed to make sure the fundraising was very above board," but they have faced questions about their relationship with donors nonetheless.
"I’m sorry I have not talked with anyone about it, but Ruth wanted it to be very private until it came before the Board," Hoffman wrote to the dean of the university’s agriculture college on April 9, 2011, in an email marked "CONFIDENTIAL," which was released to the AP in response to an open records request.

The Harkins are locked in a dispute with university leaders over restrictions on the institute’s ability to research agriculture. And they have faced questions about fundraising because some of the institute’s six-figure donors have business in front of the Senate and Harkin, a powerful committee chairman.
"Shortly after taking office in 1985, Kerry and Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa went on a fact-finding trip to Nicaragua, where they met with Daniel Ortega (right) and other Sandinistas. The trip was criticized when the Sandinistas cemented ties with Moscow."

Sen. Harkin is one of the most liberal senators in American history. Harkin has never seen an enemy of America that he didn’t like. This is especially true of Communist leaders and countries during the Cold War.
One example is back in 1984 when Harkin, along with Sen. John Kerry, flew down to Nicaragua to meet with the Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega — a fanatical Marxist-Leninist. The visit was arranged by the Washington-based, pro-Soviet organization The Institute of Policy Studies — an organization that actively cooperated with the KGB. Despite these facts Harkin enthusiastically supported, as he still does, the Institute of Policy Studies.
What angered many leading Democrat senators on the Armed Services Committee in 1984 was that Harkin and Kerry negotiated a peace treaty with our enemy Ortega. This was by definition a treasonous act.
Harkin has defamed President Bush and called the Vice President a coward. Harkin has continually sought to weaken America’s armed forces. He has consistently voted to give aide to America’s enemies: Communist Vietnam, Cambodia, Fidel Castro’s Cuba, and Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua to name a few. In short, Harkin believes in a socialist America and hates the very source of America’s wealth — the Free Enterprise System.

Harkin is NOT a liberal. He is a hardcore, lying marxist and his actions in Vietnam, Nicaragua etc. prove it beyond any doubt.
his goal in Nicaragua in 1984 to to save and protect the Sandinista Marxist dictatorship, and almost did, with John Kerry’s help, but Ortega buddyf*cked them by going to Moscow to get several hundred million dollars of Soviet arms.
Then the Senate reversed it vote on not giving aid to the “contra freedom fighters”, a direct slap in the face of both Harkin and Kerry.
Harkin started his pro-VC/Hanoi act with Don Luce, an avowed VC supporter, re the Con Son Island prison “tiger cages” hoax, and he never stopped lying.
His treason was rewarded by the people of Iowa with a lifetime political career of undermining the U.S. Boy they have some really stupid people out there.
