A shooting rampage that left a pregnant woman, her 3-year-old daughter, and seven others dead on Friday near the capital of the Philippines illustrates that the United States isnt the only nation facing problems with gun violence.
The alleged gunman had been on an alcohol and methamphetamine binge for the past week and had just returned home because of a marital problem, reports the Associated Press. The shooting spree began in a neighborhood outside Manila. The gunman was killed in a shootout with police....
Illegal gun ownership and gun trade in the Philippines are also problems.
Filipinos are required by law to be licensed to possess a firearm, and civilians are restricted to a single pistol and either a rifle or shotgun. Even so, there are an estimated 160,750 illegal guns in the Philippines, according to GunPolicy.org, which did not have comparable U.S. data available.
Tighter gun restrictions actually encourage illegal gun trade, Reuters notes. With legal access denied, Filipinos simply turn to the many illegal gunsmiths who ply their trade in back alleys and on the edge of rice fields despite government crackdowns. In addition, gun laws are not vigorously enforced, and availability is as easy as visiting a gun shop in a Manila shopping mall.

Mostly these things show a worldwide muslim and leftist problem.
Remove both. No problem.
In the beginning: Worldwide rock violence, then club violence, then spear violence, then knife and fist violence, then gun violence. Nothing changes except the means of violence. Get used to it. Resolve to be better this year, better informed - better prepared - better equipped.
All it really demonstrates is there are KuhRayZeez and Eeeevil people who will act on their fantacies or aggressiin when their mental instability reaches its apogee.
Doesn’t matter what country you are in or deserted island you are on. If a nutcase is going to pull their mental pin and explode then it’s going to happen.
Using an object which is not a sentient being is wholly dishonest to the discussion.
Ah yes, I remember it well.
Ferdinand Marcos required all guns in the Philippines to be registered. The US media loved him.
I said he would confiscate the guns within two years.
One year Marcos confiscated the registered firearms. The US media loved him!
I said he will seize power within two years.
One year later Marcos seized power. The US media then hated him.
A little easy to use app I made for headline writers for lefty papers.
But, but, but...they banned most of the guns! The Phillipines should be a peaceable kingdom where nothing bad ever happens. Oh why, oh why!!!
When I lived in Makati, the movie theater and many restaurants had signs....... please check guns at the door
The un-licensed gun problem they speak of is very much among the political class which murders its rivals for political office at a much higher rate than USA gangs kill each other off.
Here’s another example of criminals with guns killing people:
Oradour-sur-Glane was destroyed on 10 June 1944, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company.
When talking about people killed with guns, we need to include all the massacres by government which far exceed any actions by individuals.

sure, its a third world country with a fanatic muslim fraction attacking Christians all over the country but you know, you can live cheap there, right?
Not an expatriate, an ex-native here.
The Philippines is far from perfect - very far.
But still, your comments are unfair.
The Muslim violence is limited in area and rare anywhere else.
The Philippines is relatively safe as third world countries go, particularly for foreigners, and especially if you stay out of Manila.
Filipinos actually, truly like western foreigners.
The girls are definitely available and a lot of US men find them congenial.
And life there has a lot to offer, girls aside.
A professor at the University of Hawaii did a study that calculated that as many as 300 million people have been MURDERED by governments (NOT including wars - just murders). By one estimate, there have been 10 billion humans born since whenever you conceive humanity to have started. If those numbers are correct, it means that three percent of everyone who has EVER DIED, died at the hands of a government (their own or someone else's).
Somebody tell me again why I would ever give up my "assault rifle"?
Actually Marcos seizure of guns came when he declared martial law.
He did not actually seize all registered guns either. He did force a re-registration, etc. We kept our guns, but these were not of prohibited types.
Gun registration and control in the Philippines dates back to colonial times. There has never been a right to own or carry guns there without government consent.
Of course, the laws have also historically been poorly enforced.
I’ll second what you said.
One of the most beautiful countries in which I have lived. For the most part, the people are very friendly and open.
Like in America, there is a strong gun culture in the PI, and most Filipinos are very responsible with their weapons.
You get the odd ball here and there who goes off his nut, but you get that everywhere.
The thing that impressed me the most was the high quality of the back yard machinists. I saw and fired weapons that were made in back yards. From S&W look a-like .357’s to Armalites that you would be hard pressed to identify from the originals.
The industriousness of the Filipino can amaze the crap out of you.
Balderdash and Falderol!
The number is higher by a mere several hundreds of million more! And that's just in the 20th Century alone!
Hell, 300 mil is just between Mao and Stalin. Kick in Pol Pot and a few other commie pigs in Africa, (no one knows how many Moograbwe in Rhodesia or the ANC in SA has had killed ) we can top that in no time!
More people are killed in car accidents ( if you take out the suicide stats). We should outlaw cars.
