On radio today, Glenn reacted to the shocking video of some Ohio teens who taped themselves joking about gang raping a young female classmate. It’s another sad illustration of how morally depraved society is truly becoming. Glenn talks about the problem and how to solve it on radio today.

Last month, the New York Times published a detailed report on an alleged gang rape in the small Ohio football town of Steubenville. Two Steubenville football players, Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond were arrested on Aug. 22 in connection with the alleged rape, Deadspin previously reported. Months later, exactly what happened that night is still unclear. Few witnesses have come forward to discuss what happened to the unknown girl, who alleges she was assaulted and photographed by athletes from Steubenville High.

In the newly released video, a male, identified by a number of media outlets as former Steubenville High School student and baseball player Michael Nodianos, seems to talk about an instance of rape and other disturbing events surrounding the incident.

“Now, there was a video, viral video and it’s really pretty awful. A viral video that was going around from Steubenville in Ohio. Now, Steubenville, their football team is a ‑‑ this is one of those towns that revolve, it’s like, you know, Friday night lights. It revolves around football. This is not a white issue; this is not a black issue. This is a white‑and‑black issue. This is the best possible story to point out our problems because it was blacks and whites that did it together. So it shows this is a human problem, not a race problem. This is a human problem..”

Ok, I do not get this mind set of some men (or alleged men) that participate in group rape.
A single man with one woman ok, disgusting but it makes more sense than the group thing.
How is that men will stand there and watch the violation of a woman, and participate knowing that their friend just violated the woman......is that some how exciting?
As a woman rape is so repugnant to make me ill, if the guys out there understand (no need to publicly state they understand, and beleive me I do not beleive for one instance that men on FR would participate) still they might understand.

You’re absolutely right (and it’s good to see one of your posts...it’s been awhile). I was once an unbeliever, so I know how morally stunted people think. You think, “What’s the harm? It’s my life, and I’ll do whatever I like!”

Immorality is cultural poison, and truth be told, it’s all about the dose. The civil society can survive so long as the dose is small, but it cannot last when immorality becomes mainstream.

That’s where we’re at as a country. Vast numbers of Americans no longer fear God. They’ve bought into the media’s lies that there’s only one sin, the sin of being judgmental. “Judge not lest yea be judged,” is the only Bible verse they know.

You need to know that young men in groups can be pressured by peer pressure to do just about anything. What happens is that one guy does something wrong. Knowing he is guilty alone, he is going to call other guys, chicken, coward, pussies, babies — anything to make the other guys afraid of their own status in the group. The pressure that brings to bear on the psyche of the guy who doesn’t want to do the wrong thing, is often enough to get him to join the crowd.

Add in “mob mentality” where “everybody does it”, and it is not at all hard for me to understand how men will go from being onlookers to being coerced participants. I’m not obsolving them of guilt. They are guilty as hell. I’m just telling you how the guys who wouldn’t normally do the wrong thing will be coerced into joing the guys who do the wrong thing first.

There is a reason I was so unpopular in high school. I did my own thing and I did not submit to any preer pressure. So I didn’t join the pack mentality and of course I was always left out and teased.

Rape of a child under 10 years of age was a capital crime in Louisiana up until recently. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kennedy_v._Louisiana That statute was struck down by the United States Supreme Court.

I really can’t understand rape, and gang rape makes even less sense. I wasn’t what you’d call sexually moral when I was a heathen, but I never, ever considered doing anything violent to get sex. Of course, some people say rape has nothing to do with sex.

Now that I’m a believer, I even find the concept of consensual sex with someone who is not my wife to be repugnant, even more so if it’s with someone who has had numerous (especially recent) partners. It would be like having sex with a public toilet.

What I do know is there is no evil...none whatsoever...that man won’t do without God. If you can imagine it, someone somewhere will no doubt do it, and there’s nothing new under the sun.

Young people are no longer given any values that will make them feel they have the individual strength or even the right not to go along with the group.

I watched part of this disgusting video and heard all the other boys in the background snickering and urging him on, so clearly this is perfectly acceptable in modern America. (I also think they were probably stoned, judging from their speech, something which is only going to happen more and more now that pot is essentially legal for anyone at any age.)

This was a very depressing view into the minds of the next generation.

Growing up in the 1950s in West Virginia, I remember that rape was a capital crime.

When I was living in southern Chester County, Pa in the 1980s, a local woman was raped. IIRC,when the perp was identified and I believe out on bail, he was visited at night by 2-3 men in hoods and castrated.

As satisfying as that sounds, it’s a terrible idea. Make rape a capital crime and you may have fewer rapes, but you’ll have more murders. Why would a rapist allow his victim the chance to identify and testify against him? If the punishment for him is the same whether she lives or dies, you’ve given him more reason to kill her than to let her live.

I agree. Under certain circumstances, rapists should be executed. However, it would have to be clear cut (the rape evidence, not the execution). I’d hate for someone to be executed for a so-called date rape, where it comes down to the word of the victim alone. Even physical evidence, i.e. DNA and tissue tearing, aren’t absolute proof a rape occurred. I think cases like this where the rapists are gloating on video should be sufficient evidence for the death penalty.

The video is of one intoxicated teen saying "she's deader than ..." and "they raped her more than .." with lots of endings like Chuck Norris's jokes. Others are heard laughing along. It seems that some of them have seen what is happening or has happened to the girl. It may be they have just seen the picture.

One guy seems quite upset and says it's not funny. He argues with them. He says what if it's your sister. He says, "she's not dead, she's drunk". This is the person in the video, who is not accused of rape, but was making a lot of jokes about it while obviously drunk.

The original New York Times story was indeed shocking. What they did to this 16 year old. The took her from party to party, defiled her, and photographed the whole thing. She was unconcscious. They dropped her off in front of her house.
