Gay marriage remains a tough sell in Illinois

The stalling of Illinois’ gay-marriage push—at least for now—shows the difficulty of approving legislation to legalize it, even with a nudge from the home-state president, steadily rising support in the polls and national momentum from the November elections.

Democrats control both chambers of the General Assembly and the governor’s office in the solidly blue state. Yet the margin of support Senate Democrats were able to pull together for a bill last week was so thin that a death in one lawmaker’s family and another senator’s extended trip to Israel were enough to push the issue into the next legislative session. …

No legislature in the middle of the country has approved gay marriage. Of the nine states that allow it, Iowa is the only one not located on the nation’s coasts, and it adopted same-sex unions through the courts, not the Legislature.

As it became clear last week that Illinois didn’t have a deal and would have to push back a vote until possibly February, Senate President John Cullerton, a Chicago Democrat, mentioned same-sex marriage along with gun control as measures that are “always going to be very, very tough” to pass. That makes a potential victory in Illinois even sweeter, advocates say. …

I suspect we will eventually lose in Illinois, and everywhere else. That will not change reality though - gay "marriages" are not actually marriages, any more than a man who has his genitals removed and takes hormones is a woman. The far left can pretend otherwise, but it's just playing make believe.

The sad thing is that no civilization in history has survived while pretending that a gay relationship is a real marriage. When I look at what is waiting to replace Western culture, that's the part of the gay "marriage" pretense that worries me.

Well, see what the Supreme Court says. They are taking up two homosexual marriage cases this term. By June, we might see homosexual marriage imposed on all 50 states. Stay tuned.

Maybe...but,

Democrats control both chambers of the General Assembly and the governor’s office in the solidly blue state.

that's BS. Outside of Cook County, Illinois is a red state.

Ironic as this may seem to some, homosexual ‘marriage’ law is about persecuting those that refuse to service homosexual behavior.

That's exactly what it is. It's also why I am not longer gay sympathetic. I see no reason why civil unions are not good enough unless, the plan is as you stated ....and it is.

And yet Democrats control both chambers of the General Assembly and the governors office. Unfortunately the areas where the most people live are voting Democrat. Illinois is a blue state just like NY and California.

Correct.

This is not about tolerance, it is about forcing religiously traditional people to not only accept but endorse something that clearly violates their beliefs.

Yep, it all depends on what side of the bed Anthony Kennedy (and maybe John Roberts) decides to get up on the morning of the ruling. The general consensus of the court watchers seems to be that although the liberal and moderates on the court may very well want to go all the way and declare there is a constitutional right to gay marriage, they are wary of another Roe Vs. Wade debacle that tears society apart for decades and would rather approach it like they did with interracial marriage and wait until a majority of states had legalized it on their own before they "discovered" a constitutional right exists. Therefore, they will tailor a very narrow ruling that only addresses the issue of whether the federal courts had the authority to intervene in the California case, and skirt the broader issue of whether there is a constitutional right. (Of course a majority of court watcher's said they would throw out the individual mandate from Obamacare, so who really knows.)

**that’s BS. Outside of Cook County, Illinois is a red state.**

Rock Island county is back in the solid blue after a two year term by Shilling ended.

I live in west central IL. Over the past four decades, I’ve seen the farmers gradually switch to being ‘rats’, as they’ve become locked into the government controlled agriculture system. If you don’t go along with their programs you can’t qualify for any of the perks (price supports, fed crop ins., disaster payments).

Like other guvmint programs, they are proposed in order help the ‘little guy’. Limits on how much they can receive? Ha! I know several family farms that are NOT family farms on paper. Husband, wife, son(s), daughter(s), all rent ground, separately, but live in the same house.

And then there’s those paid to NOT grow crops on ground that should either be in production or pasture (like they were for years in the past).

Bill Gates owns land not far from me, under the name of San Joaquin Farms, but is not the farmer of course, his managers just rent the ground out to farmers. Wanna know what some of them are paid? Look here:

Why is Gay Marriage a “Tough Sell” in Illinois?

Simple...

Black legislators are elected by “Gay Hating” Black constituents.

I anticipate legislation from the bench, like what happened in California and Iowa. Judges have grabbed too much power for themselves that they were not supposed to possess.

That is what I read earlier in 2012, i.e., the IL state attorney general was planning to shepherd it through the state supreme court.

Hmmmmm....and who is it that Democrats say are the old, white propertied land owners? There's a lot of that down here in So. Ill, too. Most of the Democrats we have down here (Marion - Carbondale -Harrisburg) are fairly blue dog, but they are really pro-Union, what's left of the Coal Mines, Prisons, assorted government slobs, etc. Reagan turned them red. They voted for Clinton (if I didn't hate Democrats like the plague, I probably would have too in '96). There was a lot of BDS down here by '06-'07. The Ryan fiasco turned a lot of people off also, but then you have a Blagowhatever. We've had Republican State Reps here in IL-15 since forever.

Precisely. And it's why in states that have allowed it, the first thing that happens is that some homosexual 'couple' will go to a business they KNOW doesn't want to do business with them, and try to force them to provide the service. If the business refuses, the homosexual activists haul them to court, and effectively close them down.

Ironic that they demand tolerance, but they won't simply allow people to not do business with them, without fear of retribution. But they're showing that tolerance isn't what they truly want; they want to force everyone to accept their relationships, and participate in them, by way of providing services for their chosen lifestyle.

they used to say slavery had to be accepted as an inevitability of life.

they used to say the USSR would rule the world.

they used to say Mr. Hitler would inevitably take over europe.
