Lawmakers promise to replace those across-the-board cuts with more targeted steps that could take longer to implement.
Obama, speaking from Hawaii, where he is on vacation with his family, said he is willing to consider more spending cuts and tax increases to reduce the deficit.
But he said he "will not compromise" over his insistence that Congress lift the federal debt ceiling. The nation's credit rating was downgraded the last time lawmakers threatened inaction on the debt ceiling, in 2011.
"Our families and our businesses cannot afford that dangerous game again," Obama said.

I am afraid you are correct. Only we know this was not a “mistake” anymore than it is a mistake if they go along with raising the debt ceiling.
I railed at my “conservative” Senator, Ron Johnson, for voting for the “fiscal cliff” B.S. and all I got back was a garbage canned email back from him.
Asking the Democrats to come up with a solution for the spending problem, is like asking the Nazis to do Jewish outreach.

The country must go so far into debt that it collapses. That is why nobama is so insistent the debt ceiling be raised. If it's not, he can't continue he spending binge. And if he can't do that the country won't collapse. And if the country won't, he can't become dicktator for life.

But Mr President, if you refuse to compromise then you are making sure that we go over that new default cliff. Come on Mr President, you can't always have your way 100% like you did on raising taxes. That is not reasonable. This country is drowning in debt and your tax increases. Now you are willing to use our nations default as a hostage, just to get your way and put this country further in debt? If the country doesn't matter to you then think of your children Mr President.

This is indicative of the sinister Obamatons' intention to revisit the Depression---and rejigger what came to be known as FDR's New Deal.

We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. And I have just one interest, and if I am wrong…somebody else can have my job. I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises….....I say after eight years of this administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started….....And an enormous debt to boot!”.
Obama is no historian but he knows a plan when he sees it.

As TADSLOS indightfully posted: The New Deal was an abysmal failure, then a global war broke out in large part by our enemies perception of our weakness. That conflict ultimately changed everything economically. We reduced our enemies to rubble, then turned our war building industry into the greatest giant global economic engine the world has ever known to help them re-build and compete against us. Enter the libs in power again in the 60s - 70s, 90s and now the leftist bomb throwers run the country. We haven't had a decisive military or economic victory to go with it since.
