White House weighs broad gun-control agenda in wake of Newtown shootings
The Washington Post ^ | Saturday 5 January 2013 | Philip Rucker

The White House is weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation’s gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, according to multiple people involved in the administration’s discussions.

A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.

There isn’t going to be any new gun control. Neither house of Congress is going to do diddly. The mood of the country is totally opposed to gun control and the pols know it. One thing they all know how to do is stick their finger in the wind.

You don't really believe that there has ever been even ONE felon who was prevented from being armed because of the law do you?

Why are you willing to put up with the BATFE and the NICS for such meager gains? I support death penalties. I support tatooing "VIOLENT FELON" on the foreheads of such, and I support some limited liability for intentionally transferring of a gun to a person with such a tatoo.

But I don't support the de facto gun registration created by the FFL system, I don't support waiting periods, I don't support requiring a permit to carry a gun, I don't support nonsensical quizzes on gun safety that cost $25, I don't support disarming the adults responsible for the safety of our children, and I don't support banning three-ounce plastic pistol grips on rifles.

Do you support all those infringements? By doing so you lend credence to the call for the incremental nonsense we see happening now. There is no "reasonable restriction" clause in the Second Amendment.

Please tell me where your "Line in the Sand" is. Your support for the present nonsense will inevitably lead to every state having Kalifornia's 68 pages of gun laws or much, much worse.

You made quite a leap there.
OF COURSE criminals are going to obtain, possess, and likely use guns again after they are released. And if they are nailed in possession of a gun, then BACK to jail for a minimum of TEN years. And so forth. Build more prisons to warehouse the scum. Whatever.

But gun registration of any kind is a non-starter. I never even suggested it.

“If you use a gun to rob somebody, screw you. No gun for you again, ever.”

If the law does not order the execution of a person, it should not deprive him of his right to self-defense.

If you want to ensure that an armed robber never again owns a gun, you should lobby to have armed robbery punished with the death penalty.

That's a little harsh, even by my standards.
(shrug)
No, I'm fine with an armed robber just going back to jail for a long stretch if he's caught in possession of a gun.

So, a criminal who uses a gun to commit a crime forever loses his God-given right not to be killed?

No. He loses his right to possess a gun.

“No. He loses his right to possess a gun.”

Same thing. As they used to say in the 19th century, “God made man, but Sam Colt made them equal.”

No gun, no self-defense. One’s right not to be killed is nullified.

(shrug) That's the criminal's problem.
He shouldn't have used a gun to rob somebody if he didn't want to lose the right to possess one. Tough crap for him.

“That’s the criminal’s problem.”

I would see it as a problem for anyone with an interest in a just society.

Either make a law calling for his execution, or let him live.

I lean toward execution, myself.
