Social Security is as “secure” as the “free healthcare for life” many of us military types were promised when we raised our hands and took the oaths that we kept. Unfortunately, the government is not bound by its oaths to the People and when something gets inconvenient, the same government that giveth also taketh away. Many who thought it just fine for the government to break its promise to the military will be screaming very loud when they discover that they are vulnerable too.

When your income is taxed at high rates ostensibly for your retirement, there’s this natural tendency to save less independent of the system.

Many Keynesian economists saw this as one of the virtues of Social Security. In their view, saving is evil because it takes money out of the economy. You earned money by producing something, but when you save part of your money it's not being offered in exchange for things you or others produced.

Yes, I know it's insane, but so are Keynesians.
