Black and Latino firefighter hopefuls get a second chance to join the FDNY
NY Daily News ^ | january 6, 2013 | Ginger Adams Otis

They coulda' been contenders — and now they have a second chance.

Nearly 300 black and Latino firefighter candidates who didn’t score high enough to join the FDNY in 1999 and 2002 are getting a rare opportunity take their entrance exams again.

They’ll sit for the FDNY written exam Friday, and an intense physical fitness test will follow later.

If they can rack up passing grades on both, the job with generous pension, sick pay and other benefits could be within their grasp.

The break is part of a controversial ruling from Brooklyn Judge Nicholas Garaufis, who in July found the FDNY guilty of discrimination after a group of black firefighters and the Vulcan Society successfully challenged the methodology of its entrance exams.

Garaufis ordered the city to pay $187 million in damages.

He also found that 186 blacks and 107 Latinos who took the ’99 and ’02 tests might have made the grade had the process been different, and compelled the city to find as many of them as possible and give them another shot regardless of age — even those over 40. Usually the FDNY won’t allow anyone older than 29 to sit for an exam, with an exception for those in the military.

Many of the Bravest were outraged by the decision, which could catapult these latter-day candidates ahead of firefighters already on the job.

Nominated by President Clinton ...

... not that there's anything wrong with that.

What gets me is that people like him don’t even get theat their decisions are racist. He assumes Black and Latino people just can’t pass a test, so whites have to bend down and help their burden.

There was a time when such big city PDs and FDs were racist and refused to hire minorities who had passed the tests with flying colors. Powerful unions kept their membership exclusive. Now, society has flipped that bigotry on its head.

Care to give specific examples?

I could have been an NFL quarterback had skill, size and ability qualifications been different........

Affirmative-action first-responders.

I’m thinking there’s an oxymoron in there somewhere.

And the ability of these FDNY crews to suppress and put out fires shall decline proportionately. There was a REASON that a fitness requirement was put in the list of qualifications for training as a fire fighter, and it has nothing to do with race, gender or college GPA scores.

It has everything to do with being able to put out fires. With dispatch and with minimal losses to life.

Darwinian selection may manage to remove a few of these of lesser abilities, but unfortunately, their failure could seriously threaten the lives and capabilities of much better qualified individuals, and also the victims of these conflagrations.

Fire and Police Departments have been fighting this BS for at least 40 years.

They dumb down the tests until an idiot could pass and even then they cannot get their quota’s. Some come up with a residency requirement and some have Cadet programs in schools.

They hire the habdicapped and then the handicapped need more help and more quotas for promotion. They end up destrpying the Fire service and then they wonder why.

Been there seen it done, watched the greatest Fire Dept. in the world turn to sh$t.

one of the questions
when a fire alarms sounds a fire person needs to put on these items
a list of 8 items is presented in the order designated.. ex: gloves, coat, hat, oxygen tank, etc. They are in order, 1-8
There are 4 multiple choice answers. A,B, C,or D
Now the question. After putting on your hat(example) what is the next item you need put on. I kid you not.

Paging Mr. Darbyshire!

The ‘cognitively challenged’ get yet another free-be.

Note what this particular member of the Government Trough Feeder class has to say, in his own words:
““My score when I took the test in 1999 was an 88, so I passed. But I was told that if you don’t get at least a 90, don’t waste your time. I never got a call back. I was upset about it, but you have to move on. I went to transit and became a bus driver.

Note carefully - this minority Trough Feeder, having failed to get a government job because he couldn't pass the minimum requirements on a written test, didn't get a job as a private sector driver.

No, NO! This wannabe Trough Feeder became a government bus driver. He became a Government bus driver, not a commercial, real world, bus driver.

Trough Feeder Person wanted more than the private sector was willing to pas for his skills. So, Mr. Trough Feeder enlisted the unions and government to extort from the taxpayers more than he was worth on the free market.

Now, with the help of a collectivist judge, he may still become a fire fighter - a job for which he is simply not smart enough to qualify for in a competition where race is not a mandated factor.

Pray for his fellow fire fighters who will be forced to work with this member of a priveleged group of the “cognitively challenged”

History of Black Firefighters

Black Firefighter History

Let me just say, that I pulled my statements out of memory from the 80's when issues were being discussed around the water cooler. In Chicago, it was well know that people who had passed the tests were not promoted or hired.

My whole point was that Black people, in the past, have been more than willing to meet any challenge put before them, and conquer it, even if it was unfair. What happened with the introduction of progressive politics resulted in a form of mental laziness. And now it is even worse: reverse discrimination.

What conservatives need to do is stop pretending discrimination didn't exist, because progressive statists maintain a hold on minorities by constantly dredging up old grievances. What we need to remind minorities is that they(we) have never shied away from a challenge, and that America responds correctly when ability is proven.

The final physical testing, I think it’s called CPAT, is brutal. I have heard of some smug young guys....they pass the written and entry physical, go through all the training - including practice training for the CPAT, then they ended up failing the final physical tests. These were fit young men.

In our local FD, I’ve heard that they can’t even get a black person to sign up for the test for at least the past six or seven years. Of course, the tests are only given every so often, but although white women try out, no black men have for a number of years.
