Candlelight Vigil Held For Elk Killed By Police Officer In Boulder (Colorado)
CBS News Denver ^ | January 6, 2013

Posted on 01/06/2013 10:55:19 PM PST by Zakeet

A candlelight vigil was held in Boulder Sunday evening for an elk that was shot by a police officer last Tuesday.

The vigil was held on Mountain View Road near where the incident occurred. Some residents say the elk was considered a friend and even a guardian. They created a memorial at a tree in the area.

Two police officers who were involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave while the Boulder Police Department investigates.

Several neighbors told CBS4 they feel there was no reason to kill the animal, and they are encouraging others to complain about what happened.

“He was just a majestic being and it’s so sad that it came down to this, it’s heartbreaking,” neighbor Jennifer Centeno said.

Mark Rourke, a postal carrier who delivers mail to the Mapleton Hill neighborhood, told CBS4 the elk had been seen in the neighborhood over the past week or two, and that although it once cornered him on a porch, it didn’t deserve to die.

“I think it was just being defensive. I scared it when I walked through the gate,” he said. “It makes me sick, it just makes me sick. It was a beautiful animal.”

One person at the vigil called the elk a wonderful visitor to the neighborhood and he truly loved the elk.

“I cried; outraged; I lost a very dear friend,” resident Marcus O’Bryon said. “I know that’s hard for some people to believe, but he was an incredible, magnificent creature.”

Wait wait,, i got it. Maybe the elk was really killed by a “small foreign faction”. Did anyone find a ransom note?

Did the cop have a hunting license? I doubt it. And aren’t there laws about discharging weapons inside the city?

I think cops are allowed to discharge weapons in the city. They're supposed to file a report about it though. lol

I was wrong about him using a pistol though. At the bottom of the article the letter from the chief says he used a shotgun. I was going by the caption under the pic which said "Boulder Police Officer Sam Carter poses with the elk he shot with his service gun while on duty. (credit: CBS)" I wrongly assumed that "service gun" meant his pistol.

Used a shotgun, and yes there are. And cops are allowed to use one in the city to destroy an injured animal. This one had a hurt leg. And if he took the meat, it’s almost a guarantee he got permission of game and fish, otherwise you would have already heard of them taking some sort of action. Game wardens cut nobody any slack,,,ever.
Trusting the news coming out of Boulder is like,,,, well, trusting the news coming out of Boulder.

The officer on duty says the animal was limping so he shot it. He called his off duty buddy who came, the took a picture and then his buddy took the animal home to process. The police chief says this is being investigated. He should have notified the dispatcher, spoken with his supervisor, and then written a report. He did NONE of those things. If I am not mistaken most police departments require a written report any time a shot is fired.

Isn’t it customary for injured wildlife to be euthanized by Dept. of Fish and Game personnel?

I would hope so. Unless some persons life was in immediate danger, there was no need for the euthanizing of the animal by a police officer. He should have notified fish and game.

I live in Larimer county just north of Boulder county. I'm sure a town cop here in Estes or a sheriff or a state trooper would put down an injured animal before the DoW guy came if it were a public danger or the animal was really suffering and DoW was going to be a while getting there. But they would still call DoW and have them sign off on it. That would be no problem.

From all I have read in our local paper over the years they all have a tight working relationship. It's easy peasy to have the DoW guy sign off on taking road kill too. All you have to do is be the first one to ask.

As a nature lover I would have been right in there with them if I were a bit younger.

I think I could get in their pants.

I love nature.
