HEITKAMP: OBAMA’S EXTREME GUN CONTROL WON’T PASS CONGRESS
Human Events ^ | 1/6/2013 | Neil W. McCabe

Posted on 01/07/2013 9:58:03 AM PST by neverdem

The newly sworn in freshman Democratic senator from North Dakota told George Stephanopoulos on his “This Week” ABC News program that President Barack Obama’s agenda to further restrict gun rights will not pass Congress.

“Well, I think you need to put everything on the table, but what I hear from the administration — and if the Washington Post is to be believed — that’s way — way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about–and it’s not going to pass,” said Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), who defeated former Republican Rep. Rick Berg by 2,994 votes in the 2012 general election.

Stephanopoulos asked the former North Dakota attorney general, “You’re a proud NRA member in the state of North Dakota, are you willing to sign on to some of the reforms that Vice President Biden and President Obama are already talking about?”

She said, “I think what we need to do is we need to take a look at what happened at Sandy Hook. When I was attorney general, I was tasked with a national task force on school violence.”

Those measures were similar to the security procedures in place at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn., where a spree-shooter killed 26 teachers and students, she said.

“We made a number of recommendations which, in fact, were adopted at Sandy Hook to help keep schools safer. They weren’t adequate,” she said...

“OBAMA’S EXTREME GUN CONTROL WON’T PASS CONGRESS”

Depends on if Obama can make Boehner cry enough that Boehner gives in on gun control just like he did on the Fiscal Cliff and just like he will on the Debt Ceiling.

She also appeared recently on an interview by Diane Sawyer with the Senate Council of 20 Witches (sic) and was just cackling away with the likes of Feinstein, Mikulski, et al. so I have no doubt about the true cut of Heitkamp’s jib.

I took a law school class from a professor named Neil McCabe ... if I recall, he lost tenure due to a student rape scandal. He was a degenerate liberal, though ... so I kinda doubt this was written the same Neil McCabe. He didn’t seem like the “Human Events” type.

I am not an expert on ND politics. I do LOVE that state, very pro-business, low taxes, right to work, pro drilling, a sensible state government, pro Second Amendment. The state has only voted Democrat for president maybe three or four times since it joined the union last time in 1964.....few states can match such a record....that all said, how DO Democrats get elected to ANYTHING in ND? Ever?????

Call the idiots in Congress and tweet them.

Tell them not to fall for the media lies and to uphold the 2nd amendment, our gun rights , our individual rights and freedom which democrats and their media want to take away.

It was never intended to pass - its just a stalking horse for negotiations which is set at such an extreme that any ‘major concessions’ the left makes in the debate will still result in draconian gun regulation at a Federal level.

Believe it or not, that seat that Heidi won hasn’t elected a Republican to it since 1958. North Dakota had a heavy Socialist influence going back to the early 20th century, which was mostly with the Republican party (the Democrat party was largely non-existent). The battles within the GOP were between the Conservative element and the Socialist Non-Partisan League. In the late ‘50s, the NPL decided to exit the GOP and merged with the weak Democrats. Federally, the Democrats dominated from 1980 until 2010, but the GOP has been largely in control of the state since after 1990.

Alas, the GOP nominated the weak at-large Congressman who was only a freshman (and polling data indicated he was having trouble throughout the campaign). Heitkamp was part of the last group of Democrats that won office statewide (and haven’t since). Just as she won, the strong GOP candidate for the open House seat took it without much difficulty. Heitkamp has to know she has a big target on her back if she goes far left (especially on guns). I expect the new GOP Congressman Kevin Cramer will probably be her opponent in 2018.

“OBAMA’S EXTREME GUN CONTROL WON’T PASS CONGRESS”

Not relevant. Executive Orders have effect of law, and virtually never have been negated by the Congress. The current Congress lacks the gonads required to even attempt such a corrective action.

Boehner went out on a limb with the taxes and it was almost cut off. I don't think he's going too far out on this one. I don't doubt that something will pass, like mental health checks, or more comprehensive criminal record checks, or the gun show "so-called" loophole, and will allow Zero to spike the football. (Like he did on taxes -- except I don't think he won that one, even if he and Boehner both believe he did. The Bush tax cuts are now permanent for 99%. The other 1% are smart enough to avoid most of the increase.) As for executive orders, I don't know what he can do that won't -- or can't -- be tossed by the courts. Maybe something, maybe not. I don't know -- but I doubt anything comprehensive like AWB 1.0 will make its way through the House.

Berg was also one of the wealthiest members of Congress according to a list I recently saw.

The state is somewhat of an anamoly politically speaking. You are quite correct that its US Senators and Congressman have been mostly Democrats for the last four or five decades....which is in stark contrast to the state’s presidential politics having voted Democrat only once in the last 70 years.....a truly inpressive record of avoiding Democrat presidential candidates.

Rats in Congress pushed "moderates" who were pro Second Amendment in 2006 and 2008. That's why they didn't vote to renew the "assault weapons" ban in the 111th Congress when they had supermajorities in both houses of Congress. They fear the NRA more than Obama.

I'm from North Dakota, and was really hoping that within the span of four years we were going to flip our Rep. and Senators from all Democrat to all Republican. Berg ran a solid campaign against Heitkamp, pinning her as best he could with Obama, who is obviously unpopular here. She has no legislative record, however, and sold herself as an independent, which people bought despite some evidence to the contrary. Berg had an uphill climb, even in ND: a rich white guy against a female cancer survivor. Good luck.

Having said that, I'm surprised she at least gave lip service matching her campaign promise to protect gun rights. We'll see.

Is Heitkamp going to be to gun control what Ben Nelson, Mary Landrieu and Blanche Lincoln were for Obamacare?

Once Harry Reid gives her a sweet hometown deal she’ll have an arranged “epiphany.”

I believe Obama will just bypass congress and make his own laws.

The democrats in the senate and congress will be happy to let him usurp their constitutional authority.
AGAIN.

Republicans won’t be quite as happy about it but they will still just roll over as they have done the last 4 years.

As a long-time resident of North Dakota (moved away in 1988), I posted this article which may still be available on the way-back machine for a limited amount of time.

The article explains the Dakota mindset in the decade before the current oil boom. The idea is basically to send liberal turds to Washington in order to maximize their take of Federal goodies but elect conservatives on the state and local level to ensure that the money isn't squandered.

Heitkamp was active in state politics way back when I lived there. She is typical of this genre of red state congress critters in that she is outgoing and personable during election campaigns and the average voter pays little attention to what they actually do in Washington.

Gun control is a typical high profile issue where they can talk conservative AND get permission from theur liberal leadership to make high profile votes on legislation which is either (a)unlikely to pass anyway or (b)pass with enough of a majority that their votes won't matter.

Such votes are, of course, pulled out every election cycle and trumpeted as evidence that the leftwing congress critter is really an independent voice for the state.

Quite Machiavellian if true-—the voters of ND. They are basically conservative which is why the the state almost always votes GOP in presidential elections, but they want to make sure they get their share of federal pork, which is why they have a long history of electing Dems to the US Senate and House. This explains the anomaly to me adequately I think. At least the best explanation I’ve heard so far. Rather than vote the straight party ticket, the voters are leveraging their votes to maximize the greatest return possible.

I have about as much faith in this as I did in Bart Stupak’s “career pro-life” position when it came to Obamacare. She’s a newly elected liberal from a conservative state who ran as a sorta-conservative candidate (dizzy yet?, lol). She’s not going to anger the folks back home this early in the game.

Make no mistake, though, just like Stupak’s craven fold to the “accommodation” on abortion drugs in Obamacare, Heitkamp will fall right in line when (not if) Obama massages the message to make a more “reasonable” gun control (grab) approach.
