The Silence Of Electric Cars: Our National Nightmare Is Almost Over
WSJ blogs ^ | 7 Jan 2013 | Tom Gara

Posted on 01/07/2013 3:48:43 PM PST by PilotDave

They’re so quiet, in fact, that it can be a problem — a problem big enough that federal regulators have stepped in with a plan (PDF) to make the cars play a sound of their own. Pedestrians — visually impaired ones especially, but also those blessed with fine eyesight — often hear an oncoming vehicle without seeing it. By being so eerily quiet, electric cars pose a safety risk, so the logic goes.

That’s why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has published this list of proposed sounds that electric vehicles should make. Have a listen — it’s what the future sounds like!

The basics are that electric cars should produce a sound when in reverse, and when driving at speeds of up to 30 km/h. One proposal was for the sound to be a recording of what an regular gas-powered car sounds like, but that idea was quickly dismissed because it “would not ensure sufficient detectability.”

Obviously.

The proposed noises are a set of quasi-futuristic whirring hums that sound a bit like what you would imagine an electric engine would sound like, if it didn’t actually sound like nothing at all. They are designed to change in pitch as the speed of the car increases. More precisely, according to the NHTSA, there should be a “one percent shift in pitch frequency of the vehicle sound per km/h of acceleration to ensure that pedestrians would be able to determine whether an [electric vehicle] is accelerating or decelerating.”

Perhaps a playing card in the spokes? A big whistle taped to the bumper? So not only is the death rate higher in electric cars, but they cause more deaths to all around them as well. So loud pipes do save lives? I'd go for an x-wing fighter sound. Or maybe a DC 3, Just wow.

I have perfect sight and perfect vision, and I’m not unattentive, but I’ve nearly been killed by these things twice. Both times it was when an electric vehicle came around the corner of a building and I as a pedestrian was completely in the right. Not a fan.

My mother in law nearly ran me over in her danged electric thing. A vehicle should make some noise when it’s about to move.

So...I wonder how many people have actually been killed or injured by this supposed problem. Or are they just looking for something to regulate? I’ve never heard of carnage on the golf courses caused by quiet golf carts.

A neighbor has a Prius. I suggested that to her when she crept up on me one day while I was at the mailbox. :)

Capitalize on it and repackage “Jetsons” sound effects. Alternatively, the sounds could be a downloadable “ringtone” kind of thing. A user could select “Bugatti”, “North American P-51” (that would be my choice, LOL) or ‘73 Primer-grey Mercury Marquis or any of a dozen other car sound packages (CSPs) I am sure a James Brown voice would work pretty well as far as getting attention.

the Nazi’s put screaming sirens on the fixed wheel struts of Stuka dive bombers in order to intimidate those on the ground during the plane’s high speed dive.

The Jetsons already provided the correct sound for electric vehicles, those that aren’t government subsidized at least.

Government subsidized ones should get Fisher-Price pull toy music.

Funny how some problems are very easy to solve. We simply pass a law requiring each electrical vehicle to be preceded by a man on foot blowing a trumpet or playing a drum. Laws such as these were passed in some places in the early days of the automobile because it was perceived that automobiles would startle horses. Similar problem, same solution.

There will be apps.

If I had the misfortune of having to drive a silent hybrid, I would want it to sound like a 1970 Super Bee, or a similar-vintage Shelby Cobra.

When I went to school, they had two Hybrids that were reserved for faculty and staff to sign out for official travel. They were parked in a newly paved lot and roadway. I had and saw multiple close calls and they pulled out of the lot and sped off campus. Never had that problem with any gas powered car or even the golf carts the facilities staff drove around.

As a kid in Brooklyn I saw this same problem. The City used electric trolleys that made very little noise. On my street they ran under the elevated trains which made lots of noise. There were plenty of bars on my street and every once in a while someone would stumble out of one of them and get hit by a trolley too quite to hear with a train over head. They added kind of a deer whistle on the front of them and that helped. But they discontinued them before really solving the problem.

This is a real problem. There was this 20-something liberal idiot speeding through a Walmart parking lot, zipping from one row to another, passing through the crosswalk in the process. Thank goodness I saw the berk because I sure didn't hear him.

Of course, with the silence I am sure he could hear my congratulating him upon his vehicle choice and other sundry remarks.

I wonder how many people have actually been killed or injured by this supposed problem. Or are they just looking for something to regulate? I’ve never heard of carnage on the golf courses caused by quiet golf carts.

Silent at 30 mph w/ pedestrians is a recipe for trouble.

I'd rather the government stop creating environmentalist incentives to FORCE a stupid concept doomed to fail. Electric vehicles are stupid solutions to an imaginary problem. The only way they make sense is if they're in a hybrid gas-electric mix, and even then, stupid and wasteful overall.

And they're flops because people are smarter than the stupid electric concept. What alternatives, though -- the inventive Americans who could build really smart, strong little vehicles to make things more efficient, are strangled in infancy. American productivity is under seige. Environmentalism has seized political power that is strangling American enterprise and self reliance, in everything from food production (fishing, farming, ranching) to manufacturing. The only reason crap from China sells is because Americans are shackled by government regulation of some sort of another from doing it themselves.

Environmentalism is a malevolent force pushed by a minority working to brainwash the increasingly ignorant (therefore gullible) majority on an idiot premise ("save the planet"). The idiot premise is simple to evaporate with math, basic grasp of time, and a bit of knowledge about geological science. Americans are sensible: our entire duration on "the planet" since the first human stirrings millions of years ago, has been a fragment of a freefloating nanosecond in our context. We are a sparkle of dust. We could no more recognize, let alone manipulate, the climate than Obama could fart unicorns.

We are Americans, though. Better than anyone expects. I think a lot, if not most, halfway educated and informed Americans at least suspect environmentalism is wholesale hornswaggle, and when push comes to shove, will toss the tree-hugger garbage away and reclaim their birthright to fish, farm, manufacture, and LIVE prosperously and morally.

Grrrrrr. The whole electric vehicle push, like pretty much all of liberal-spawned regulation, serves only to create strife and hardship.
